Imperium Offtopicium VI-2

The Federation is, quite frankly, greatly offended that the discussions held in private with the Avaritians were pointless. Ade Sakari has released his main point of the discussions for the world to see:

"Our question remains - what makes it your right to meddle in African affairs? With all due respect, you are an outsider making bold claims about how another nation should be run, moreover that nation being one of our neighbors. You do understand how provocative that is?

I care not what form of government our neighbors take, as long as the process is of their own free will. We respect that you came to us through private channels to seek our thoughts. However, if I may say so, it is foolish that a region historically destabilized by the meddling of outside imperial powers seeks to make such geopolitical moves in the lands of another. Think of your history before coming to the Federation with such reactionary ideas."

As such, the Federation will join the sanctions against Avaritia, in hopes that the rest of the Pan-African Trade Pact will do so as well. On the topic of geopolitics, the Federation expresses its sympathy to Carthage and the people of the Iberian peninsula, and denounces the New Roman Empire for their actions in Barcelona. Such war crimes have no place in the contemporary world if we are to build toward peace - and a global power such as Rome ought to be held accountable for its actions.

As a further show of good faith, Senegal has offered to aid in the redevelopment of Mali by sending a contingent of workers to aid in infrastructure construction and repair, and welcomes other Pan-African Trade Pact members to aid as well. (ECON to Create An Advantage for Mali - Redeveloped Infrastructure; use free invoke - Pan-African Trade Pact).

Additionally, the FSA has announced a joint venture with UCAR, Eurasian Federation, and IUN space agencies. On the part of the FSA, two projects have been announced
  1. FSA scientists will aid the Eurasian Federation in clearing space junk (SCI to Aid Eurasia - Cleanup Space Junk
  2. With no current launch facilities in place, 100 miles from New Freetown, the FSA has designated coastal area for clearing and the construction of both launch pads and a mission headquarters, to operate as the FSA central HQ for all operations. (ECON to Create An Advantage - FSA Mission Control; use free invoke - Federation Space Association).
In New Freetown, Founder's Day is upon us, in celebration of the 22nd anniversary of the foundation of Sakari Enterprises and the unification of Margaitania, Senegal, and Asanteman. Across the Federation, both Liberated and Corporate join in the festivities, as even though it is a celebration of a single corporation, the founder Ade Sakari has led the Federation to what it is today. Food is aplenty, and Sakari made sure to send extra food from his corporation to alleviate stress in Asanteman. (CUL to Create an Advantage - Founder's Day to lessen tensions in Asanteman with the holiday; stunt - Eureka! to replace with a SCI roll).

Finally, upon news of the IOC's reorganization, the Federation pledges its support as well (POL to Aid The Balkan Federation - IOC).

Leveraging the predominance of the Second Anti-Japanese War of Resistance, it is necessary to now educate all Chinese in occupied territory as to the nature of the crucial task that lays ahead. They must be made aware of both the revolutionary struggle and the hideous backwards nature of the feudal Japanese monarchy. They are living a lie, trapped in perpetual servitude to a government that seeks to suck the marrow from their very bones, and it is imperative they steel themselves and take up arms against their unjust occupiers.

We will flood the airwaves with broadcasts educating the occupied Chinese about their Japanese overlords, and publish pamphlets and books detailing not only the excesses of the Tianguo regime, but the unimpeachable science of proletarian revolution.

Inspired by radio broadcasts blasted across the border, beginning in the mid-part of 2100 waves upon waves of refugees began crashing onto the border of the Redoubt, particularly along the Californian and Coloradoan borders. Protestants, particularly those of light-skin, were given preferential treatment among the refugees, free to resettle in any part of the Redoubt they please. This was in line with the stated goal of the republics of the American Redoubt, to serve as a refugee for those of Judeo-Protestant belief systems and to serve as the bulwark of freedom in America. That does not mean that there weren't objections to this policy, but for the most part those in good favor with the Redoubt would find themselves welcome in its lands.

Those who did not meet those descriptions find themselves less fortunate. Hispanic catholics in particular were singled out by the Redoubt in scorn. Those who weren't turned away from the Redoubt at the border, having been denied refugee, were arrested for illegal border crossings. What became of these people is unknown at the time of this writing. One can presume that they were eventually deported back to areas within El Norte, but ugly whispers have been heard that these refugees would be put to work. The last remaining group, and by far the smallest, were the Jewish refugees. Despite claiming to support all of those of Judeo-Protestant heritage Jews were commonly subject to contempt and anti-semitic attacks with the Redoubt. While stationed at a smaller town in Wyoming, I would witness an attack against a resettled Jewish family were "Christ-Killers" were spray painted upon the walls of their house and the father of the family savagely beaten. While those who committed the atrocity would be found, similar other ones would never result in a trial. Still, most refugees of Jewish heritage would be resettled unlike Catholics.

As refugees began being resettled, disturbing rumors began spreading within the Redoubt. Most were about discrimination and attacks Protestants have faced within El Norte, with the worst offenses being amplified by radio stations, news stations, and local churches. Refugees would be hosted in those establishments and given free reign to tell their stories, usually with some prompting to embellish by the interviewer. During this time it is hard to tell myth from reality about what was going on the North California, where most of the rumors were about. But their effect was undeniable. A certain venom, previously subdued, began spewing from the mouths of those in power against El Norte and particularly the Norther California Khanate. And with it, a new word appeared in common dialogue within the Redoubt: crusade.

-----
Overcome (Political +2): Resettle refugees in the Redoubt who have come fleeing the violence in El Norte. As mentioned in the above RP, given precedence to Protestants and Jewish people.
Create Advantage (Political +2): Whip up horror stories, true or false, about the violence in El Norte. Politicians on the border states and militia leaders will be using this as a justification of the "cleansing" of the Northern California Khanate.
Military Attack (+3): A small militia group will take the initiative to cross the Californian border to Yreka. There they will assist Protestants in making the journey to the Redoubt. While they are told not to engage the forces of NorCal, tensions are running high and if a few skirmishes happen then those at fault will not be punished.

Political Facts of the Eurasian Federation

Political History
Today’s national boundaries of the Eurasian Federation were painfully carved out by the autocratic regime of Vladimir Putin. A significant number of the pre-Cataclysm wars were centred on the European and Middle Eastern fronts where Russia was an major belligerent. As the world order destabilized, with Russia and the west engaged in several proxy wars and arms races, the open conflict finally began in the twilight years of Putin’s reign. It’s possible the Plague saved Putin from the full might of a western counter-offensive, because by the time the Cataclysm began, Russian soldiers were stationed across much of the former European USSR. The west conceded to Russia’s new annexations in a peace agreement, with horrified protests from Ukraine (whom to this day has never made peace with Russia, but merely exists in a state of ceasefire). Then in 2039, Putin died quietly in his sleep. Within days there were demonstrations in the millions, and the Sunflower Revolution put in-power new politicians who agreed to participate in a global government, the Integrated United Nations (IUN). Several decades of reconstruction and peace kept the post-revolution political structures stable, and when the IUN itself was abandoned, the children of the Sunflower Revolution proclaimed the independence of their free and democratic society.

Political Parties
The political spectrum of the Eurasian Federation is dominated by futurists of all stripes - with much of the public enthusiastic for the future, and large sections of the donor class from the tech sector. The major political split is between technogaians on the left and transhumanists on the right. The technogaians, whose main political party is the Ecological Union led by Eduard Kabaeva, are liberal environmentalists who have campaigned in the past on restoring the world’s climate using science. They also are generally aligned with other traditionally left positions on social and economic matters, with a significant portion of their voter base in ecologically sensitive areas such as coastal cities like Saint Petersburg and Riga and the climate-sensitive rural sections of Russia. The transhumanists, who are represented by the Party of Progress led by Zmitser Otroschenkov, in contrast to the left, campaign on the acceleration of technological development to improve the human condition, particularly by supporting tech businesses in pursuit of new technologies, as well as with their emphasis on promoting space exploration and commercialization. The transhumanists are largely supported by the urban population of inland cities, as well as disparately by regional groups such as the Kazakhs who stand to gain from their state initiatives.

In-addition to the Ecological Union and the Party of Progress, there are several other parties that largely ally themselves to one of the major two parties in the Federal Assembly. The current ruling party is Zmitser Otroschenkov’s Party of Progress. Otroschenkov is a Belarusian elected in 2097 to a five-year term as President of the Federation.

Correspondence from Rome, addressed to the Bureau of Foreign Affairs
There has been some misunderstanding clearly. I was just filling out the papers for further diplomatic access to the Roman state and it appears I have been appointed as an aide to a general. This was an unfortunate event and I feel it would not be not just a lot of unnecessary paperwork but also impolite for me to resign from this position. As such I will be requesting administrative support from the BFA in the correct was to respond to these situations. I will be reporting back with all information that I am given in my capacity as this General's aide and would appreciate it if you could respond with advice.

Meanwhile in Prague - Diary of Maria Heyrovský, Archdeacon of Prague
Rutilianus arrived last week with his contingent of priests. I don't think any of us anticipated what was to come at the time. Of course us here in the Prague diocese had heard all about the plight of the Spanish and the Roman war crimes being committed there. I'm not used to the Bureaucracy moving so fast as to do anything about it though. Much of Rutilianus' delegation stayed here in the Deanery Building to fill out the additional paperwork that they hadn't known about but Rutilianus was eager to see the people he would be ministering to at the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord in the lower city. I did tell him that going down to the lower city was paperwork heavy and it wasn't always that easy to get back but he ignored me and set off anyway with two other priests in tow.
A week later and we still haven't heard from him, not that it matters much now with the travel ban. The other priests he brought are already appealing to the Bureau of Alpine Affairs for their right to be here. Of course even if they don't get it I imagine it'll be a while before the Bureaucracy gets its act together enough to evict them.

Opinion
The Mediterranean, Carthage, Rome and Spain: this atrocity must end, now.
Slavoj Markelj

As of the date of writing, the Roman legions have already taken control of Madrid, and are poised to push forwards to Gibraltar, while the Carthaginian navy dominates much of the Mediterranean sea. Meanwhile, behind the lines of both sides, trouble ruminates, as the people of both sides of the Mediterranean have suffered the consequences of war. Lastly, but by no means least, the Spanish guerra have rose up once more again, much like they have done so nearly 3 centuries ago against the Napoleonic forces. In other words: an absolutely barbaric mess that shows that no lessons were learned after the Cataclysm.

But let us turn the page a little bit, shall we? Let us go back to where it all began.

Asturias. Today, it isn’t much different from the Polish Commonwealths or the Bordeaux Emergency Coalition, as there is no single authority that rules it. Before this, a pro-Roman faction had been in control of the situation, but the pressure that was extolled onto the state was too big to overcome, and it quickly collapsed into what it is today. Some say that this is why Spain doesn’t deserve self-determination, but of course, this misses the whys and the hows of the situation that led us to where we are.

So with the collapse of the Oviendo Conference due to the incompatible imperialist interests of Carthage and Rome, war was declared, and, you know, it’s easy to say that fate destined it to happen so, but I remain unconvinced of that. Would it be difficult to create a compromise between the two nations? Yes, of that there is absolutely no doubt. Impossible? No. Even today, I hold the hope that there could be a peaceful solution that’ll lead to the self-determined states of Spain, Portugal and Catalonia (and whichever other states might arise if necessary). Of course, to achieve this, unfortunately, requires the agreement of Rome and Carthage, which at the present point, is not an easy task, not without outside influence.

That leads us to my next points. I have two primary takeaways from the current situation:

Both sides have failed at the diplomatic game.

It’s undeniable that the jingoist way of Rome is one of the primary causes for this unfortunate situation. Before this war started, in the pre-war period, there was almost a war in the Alps, which would’ve been somehow even more pointless than the current conflict raging on in the Iberian peninsula (and soon, the Apennines, if rumours are true). Thankfully, the NAP has intervened, and managed to prevent this from occurring – for now, anyway. This, of course, only highlights a tendency in Roman diplomacy (if there’s one, anyway) of belligerence, which only serves to turn off nations that aren’t antipathetic to Carthage already…

Of course, one cannot ignore the elephant in the room – the Rape of Barcelona, as it has been dubbed by the press around the world. The Emperor has vowed to eliminate the elements of the army that are unruly and undisciplined (as if it’s just a “few bad apples” that killed 30,000 Catalans), but one wonders, why was that army there? The question is rhetoric, of course, and any man with a head on their shoulders can answer it themselves. War crimes happen in war – what a shocking concept! No amount of training and discipline can prevent that, which is a crime in itself, one of the worst ones, in fact, as it drags in entire populaces into a bloody struggle for those high above – and I’m not just talking about the Romans and the Carthaginians only, too. The people of Iberia are suffering terribly as we speak…

Of course, Carthage is far from innocent. We, here on the Balkans have been hit by the new tolls on Gibraltar, crippling our economy in a very bad way. It is why the initiative of our diplomats in Moscow, as well as the Armenian Accords with the Zunbils and of course, the strengthening of our trade relations with the friends within the NAP are a welcome sight. Because, it is evidently clear, that whoever owns Gibraltar, will inevitably use it as a tool to press on us. Forging out our independence, as opposed to making compromises on crucial matters like this, is the way to go, that is without a doubt.

Meanwhile, the “internationalisation” debacle of Suez might have caused a certain bad feelings amongst the Abyssinian diplomacy, although, of course, we cannot really tell for sure, but the UAR seems to show a certain dislike for Carthage at the moment, shown by their support for Abyssinia’s initiative. What’s more certain is that the connections of Carthage with the Avaritian Consortium have caused resulted into a definite bitterness towards Carthage.

In short, the two states have more or less isolated themselves from the world at large, which could have very serious consequences in the post-war situation…

Which leads us to our second point.

Both sides have already lost the war.

This might sound audacious, but it becomes evident on a further glance. Even now, you have strikes in North Italy, the undisciplined army of Rome and whatever solutions the Emperor will seek out, the disruption of trade within the Western Mediterranean, the ravaged Iberian peninsula. It will only become worse as more people perish in increasingly pointless ways.

But let us look beyond the present. Whichever state wins this bloody struggle, they will be saddled with the aftereffects of this conflict. If Rome wins, they’ll have to deal with the reconstruction of Iberia. Some have put forwards that there’s circles in Rome who are willing to let territories to vote whether to join Rome or not. But this is such a pointless and inane preposition. It would be much of a choice as Austria got in 1938 during the infamous Anchluss. Even if, somehow, you have a state that votes to not join Rome, would it not be compromised, considering the fact that it can be destroyed by the Roman legions if they dare so much to not do what the Emperor demands? It would be a satellite in all but name.

Of course, that’s only Iberia. Just the conquest of North Africa will be a bloody and terrifying affair, no matter the illusions that the current situation in Iberia gives. Think the Spanish guerrillas are bad? North Africa would be a special Hell for both of the sides, an apocalyptic landscape to fight in. And once it is conquered, will Rome be able to rule it? And to what end? Will just the insatiable desire for conquest (after all, “nor the east, nor the west”, as Tacitus put it) be enough of a driver to rule this vast territory, going deep into the Saharas? I believe not.

Carthage has the same issues. First of all, they’ll have to rebuild the devastated Iberian peninsula, and bring it to proper order, especially with the rise of the Spanish guerrillas, who might not be so intent on putting down their weapons even once the war is over. That’s one thing. Then, the conquest of Italy, much like the conquest of North Africa for the Romans, will be incredibly difficult. The Romans will not go down easily by any means, and we expect, once more, a bloody and terrifying struggle over it (that’s such a theme in this kinda things, ain’t it), which will doubtlessly result into thousands dead.

And then the occupation of Italy, of course, will also be a fraught affair, with guerrillas arising in it, as well, and resistance to the occupiers is all but guaranteed.

Both sides face the same issue in a case of a victory: they’ll be able to enforce a hegemony upon the Western Mediterranean, but as Tacitus once said, they’ll also make a desert and call it peace. As I’ve already mentioned, they’ll rule over a devastated regions, but not only that. They’ll be also isolated from the rest of Europe (and perhaps, even, the world), as both sides have shown belligerence in one way or another. Every move of theirs will be carefully followed, whether for a sign of weakness, or for a sign of their next move. And in the end, there’ll be a question Africa, Europe and the Middle East as to what’ll happen next. Both sides claim that once their opponent is vanquished, they’ll no longer continue to expand, and pose no threat to peace – but such promises from imperial powers are, well, to say the least, ridiculous and practically worth nothing.

What Is to Be Done?

I can already hear you thinking - “Well, then what now?”, and well, the answer is really quite simple.

The only way to permanently resolve the crisis situation in Spain, indeed, in the whole of the Mediterranean, perhaps, to stop the deaths of Romans, Carthaginians, Spaniards, Catalans, Asturians, Portuguese, to put an end to the blockades and tolls, to establish peace in this disturbed region for once and for all...It’s all in two words:

Self-determination.

The people of Iberia deserve to have a choice. Will they stay with Carthage? Or will they join Rome? Or will they establish states of their own, and take their fate in their own hands? That’s up to them to decide. This choice has to be given to them. It is absolutely imperative, because we believe that of all people in this war, the Iberians have suffered by far the most. They are, indubitably, the victims of this conflict between the two powers, and if there’s justice, they must elect their fate.

This is the only way to go forwards, and I hope that the people of the world will come to see it for what it is.

Statement from Shophet ("Judge") Sayyida
In Response to the Balkan Federation's *Pazitel*

It saddens me whenever our neighbors of the Mediterranean are so immodest as to cover their intentions with so thin a ploy. The Balkan Federation pretends to be an impartial third party in this conflict when in reality they are Rome's greatest ally. It was their diplomats that diffused Rome from fighting a two front war in Switzerland, and it is their diplomacy now that is trying to force good Carthaginians from the government they voted themselves into less than a decade ago. Note their Rhetoric, trying to distinguish Catalonians, Spanish, and Portugese, from each other. We are all Carthaginians and we will not be torn apart so that the Balkans can have cheaper imports.

The Balkan Federation would like to note that this is an opinion piece, created by an independent newspaper media, therefore, only reflecting their opinion on the matter. I hope that Shopet Sayyida realizes that Pazitel does not actually reflect upon the government's policy in any way.

On Empires

What is an Empire ? What makes a nation an Empire and are there certain things we should expect from an Empire ? In many publications these days the word Empire is used very negatively, the "American Empire", the "Russian Empire and of course since recently the Neo-Roman Empire. All these Empires had very different forms, different circumstances that formed and defined them, still the word Empire always carries a negative feel with it, an Empire seems like something of the past, something that supresses people and takes away their sovereignty, makes them slaves.
And some times, not always but more often than I like it, people also connect our nation with these negative traits, for we are also an empire, the Empire of Abyssynia.
Now I claim that our empire is nothing bad and I shall explain why.
So many empires have brought death and fire to the nations they forced to submit to them, butchered millions and called it civillization. Now what did our nation, when parliament proclaimed the new line of Emperors and when out nation was surrounded by chaos ? The Lions of the Empire marched out and brought peace and stability to Somalia, Eritrea, Sanzibar and Yemen. We did not burn these nations and people to the ground and told them they were now like us. We preserved their culture, made it a part of the Empire and allowed them to flourish like never before.

When the IUN collapsed, it was the Emperor that kept us, the new industrial heart of the oldest continent, together and then spread out wealth to our neighbors. Ethiopia, Ogaden, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sanzibar and Yemen today have wealth neither of our citiziens would ahve ever dreamed of two decades ago. We united our people, diversity flourished within our union so did the people.

Never have the Lions invaded any sovereign nation, our army only fights to preserve life, while other Empires armys butcher entire cities. For our empire is not one formed on bigotry or a sense of superiority, a sense of entitlement to all the worlds wealth, no. Our empire is one of unity and freedom, of wealth and peace. The empire has brough an era of never before seen wealth to our countrys. Law rules throughout our Empire, law craeted by the Parliament elected by all of our people, we are a beacon of democracy in this world.

Now, can such an empire of law, democracy and freedom be compared to all those horrible empire of the past and present ? We shall redefine the meaning of "Empire" so that whenever says it they think of our nation first, so that every nation that wants to claim to be an Empire has to compare to our achievements and match them before even worthy for consideration.
