Rules:

House Rules:
Spoiler :
1. Do not flame, troll, or personally insult any other player OOC or IC. At all. You may comment on certain things negatively, but don't take it further than that.
2. Stay on topic. Make sure all comments are relevant to the fictional world of the current IOT and have nothing to do with your personal religious/political beliefs.
3. Your posts should actually consist of something relevant to your nation and not just one-liner comments. Do not spam.
4. Long diplomatic discussions belong to the realms of Social Groups or visitor and private messaging, not the Game Thread.
5. No powergaming. By definition, powergaming is making your country surpass every other country by all terms including armed forces, technology, etc.
6. The GM is supreme. He reserves the right to change game rules, ignore or modify orders, impose restrictions on players, disband player nations, and so on.
7. Please write your orders in Red and Bold, so I can see them better. Blue is reserved solely for me to make rule notices, warning players, etc.
8. Above all else, RESPECT THY FELLOW FORUMERS.

Joining: The map is blank, no provinces no nothing. Create a nation, I will need the full name, government, flag, a short history, leader and capital. If you cannot crudely draw the outline of your nation, you can post reference maps or just tell me in terms of modern nations. You are not limited by size, but consider most ethnic groups are in the same location as they would be in 1900 and claiming too much will end badly. I may adjust slightly the claims for aesthetic and other reasons. I would like if you focused in Europe and Asia, colonial division will be done with a conference thread that will be posted in the social group. I will not accept ******ed nations like batmanistan and gangnam, please try to keep it interesting and maintain the atmosphere.

Roleplay: Is encouraged and rewarded, remember update 0 is 1st of January 1900, every update is 1 year. So dont powergame or go insane by claiming to have made a radioactive monkey in 1923. The Alternate history of this game starts at 1389, the Turks being beaten back at Kosovo and loosing the foothold in Europe. This event will and can change other events according to you but please keep it real and civil.

Nations: The core of this game are nations. You will notice that Nations have the following stats; Economic Power (EP), Public Approval, General Info, Population stats, War stats (including army and navy strength) and Political stats . You may say that in IOTs nations should start as equals and that everyone should get a fair chance. I say test your skills in diplomacy, warfare and intrigue, make Poland a world power, change the course of History. Also picking bigger and stronger nations may have its drawbacks. Please dont complain on my distribution of wealth and power relative to nations.

Economic Power: Economic power is a generalization of the nations Industrial and Resource might. In Valkyrie the system was flawed as a nation could isolate itself and with luck become the dominant world power. The economy system is now based on a "base economic factor" that you will be given when you pick your nation with bonuses and increase in your economic power being done via conquest, roleplay, company contracts and etc.

I would also like to say something about economic crises, beware for now thats all.

Public Approval: Public Approval is the happiness and satisfaction of the people on government policies. This does not include the approval of colonial subjects only the "homeland" people. A Public Approval under 50% is considered dangerous and can lead to either two things a democratic change of government or a rebellion/coup d'etat. A democratic change of Government would be the election of a new party or a referendum on changing certain features of the government. I will allow players to RP elections and pick who they seem fit, but you aren't going to be able to pick Adolf Hitler in 1923 (or anything that absurd). A referendum can change government types from lets say a Const. Monarchy into a Republic. Rebellions are armed "campaigns" against your country, and its a war, which will be later explained in warfare. Rebellions can be Secessionist, Ideological (communist, fascist and etc,) or Religious. Coup d'etat are violent changes of government without a full scale war. The higher the public approval the better the stability and economic growth. You can increase it by RP, Events and Missions and by successful wars. War exhaustion also effects Public Approval.

General Info: Full name, leaders, government type and population. These are mostly formal stats, which are linked to other vital stats. You can have a census at least every 4 years, it will refresh your population stats and maybe help your economy.

Population stats: The total population of a nation is also a part of the general info stat. As said censuses will give you a rough number of people. Apart from that it will give you ethnicity. Ethnicity is very important because you'll have to be careful what you say and what are your politics, also other nations can use it as a casus belil. The census population is only the "homelands" population no colonial population counted.

Military stats: There are two key military stats, those are Army and Navy Strength. They show the general strength of the army/navy. Another factor I have added is manpower as to prevent small nations from buying an oversized army. 1 AS costs 2EP and 1 NS 4EP. Three things are important in military stats Battle, Front Lines and Modernization
1. Battle - A battle will be decided by several key factors: Army/Navy Strength, Defense/Terrain Bonus [Defenders, dependent on the terrain, have a bonus], RP Bonus, Luck (Dice Roll) and Naval/Air superiority. The Nation with the highest "end score" wins the battle. I may add a roleplay - zork factor into this but if both sides consent to it and arrange a time.
2. Front Lines - If for example Germany invades France, and wins the battle but doesn't completely destroy the enemy army a front line is made. Since this is pre Blitzkrieg, and still WW1 fashion, front lines can lead to a stalemate. If the enemy army is completely defeated (France) Germany will occupy all of France, but if France still has an army after the battle, but Germany does have victory a front line is made.
Front lines are marked by red or some strong color, and an occupied stripe behind it. Everything thats behind the front line is occupied (by Germany for this example). Front lines are just convenient ways of seeing invading armies progress.
A picture of the example:

Also something worth explaining, Annexation, Occupation and Vasalation:

1. Italian annexed territories (note I left the grey border, but it wont be there in game)
2. Italian Occupation (Of Montenegro)
3. German Annexed territories
4. German Occupied territories
5. Bulgarian and Hungarian Annexed territories
6. German vasal NDH

Even though occupying territories gives you 1/2 EP, its still a smart option for territories not ethnically yours or with a strong rebel presence, because when occupied they are easier to control. Annexation is making that territory a part of yours own "fatherland", good for expand onto territories that you have a casus belil on, and finally creating vasals is the best way to control a foreign territory.

3. Modernization is not just about the current military but also civil technology development. Most European nations have it on High but events will come up, where you will need to invest to keep it that way, also for nations that have a lower modernization rate, reform can bring up the level but at a cost.

If a nation plans a sea invasion, one naval strength can "transport" two army strength. That means if Japan invades Siam with 6 armies, it will need to have at least 3 navy strength.

Political Stats: Its simply the part of the stats that tells you the nations most popular political parties. This stat is very important, because elections will be linked to them and new popular parties will rise. Players can also create parties, it will be explained below in the Parties part of the rules.

Rebels: To create a rebel movement, one must post its ideology, name, flag and leader. Rebels have a different stat set, which you will see later, when enough rebel groups apply. Rebels dont have the classic EP, as in terms of industry, yet there EP is defacto the cash funds of the organization. Rebel groups also instead of population have members , thats the number of people willing to join the rebellion when it starts. Manpower also increases the complete AS of the group. Rebels can be three groups Secessionist, Ideological and Religious.

Elections:
None NPC players, that is players call elections [if democracy], it should be done every 2-4 updates [depending on the player], the longer you postpone it or completely delay it [if democracy] the bigger chance your popularity will decrease, depending on the political stats I will in the update post the results, players can of course roleplay about it after and before.

Espionage:

Fund Coup D'etat: A coup will replace the current government of a nation with a friendly/allied or even puppet government. At minimum a coup costs 5 EP, the price is a bit high because I dont want coups and counter coups all over the place, each 5 EP gives you a 10% increase in success chance. For example Chile has 45% public approval, if someone invests 5EP in a coup, then I will roll from 1 to 55 on the RNG. If the roll is <45 then its a failure, and if its really low the word comes out who funded it. If the roll is >45 then the coup is a success. Thus public approval will become a bigger factor in this game, and improving it will be key for protecting yourselves. Also every nation that has a public approval of 80% or more, cannot be couped, but the approval must be brought down first (explained later), also you can invest more than 5EP to increase your chances of course.

Destabilization: This is how you lower the public approval of a nation. Every 2 EP invested gives you a roll. I roll from 1-100, each time a roll is greater than the nations public approval, the public approval of the said nation is lowered by 5%. This will make unstable nations even more threatened and stable ones harder to overthrow or take over.

Rebellions: To be added

Stealing war plans: Each EP invested gives you a 5% chance to reveal part or all of the enemies war plans.

I think those are the rules, if you have any questions, please ask, when claiming nations do it in bold red

REGARDING OVERLAPING CLAIMS, I WILL TOSS A COIN IF PARTIES DONT REACH AN AGREEMENT. bold red

Capital - Roma

Brief History - With the Ottomns never successfully capturing Constantinople, the whole Mediterranean changed. The Eastern Roman Empire spread across the whole Mediterranean coastlne, appearing to reform itself into its former glory. However, internal struggle and rebellion led to the Empire shattering, and by 1700, Italy was left as a tangled mess of city-states. Roma stood as the strongest once again, and through diplomacy, trickery, blood, and steel, Italy was once again reunified. Rome's republican government was widely accepted by those who felt their voices were lost to the Eastern Roman Empire, and its relative stability resulted in Italy becoming strong once again. By 1900, the NRR has spread further, and has become a trading power in the central Mediterranean.

Short History:

The Russian state in its current state is in a rather curious position. Historically, even before the memorable Mongol invasions of old, the lands of Rus have been long divided between a multitude of warring states. Those same scars of division are still seen today within the Confederation, where we see various nations, each with their own ruler, solely loyal to themselves and to Russia. By the late 14th century, the Russian lands were in dire conditions. The massive Kazakh, Nogai, and Golden Hordes threatened the already tenuous Russian peace and, while not individually or even combined as powerful as the Mongolian Empire that threatened Russia earlier, were all huge threats to be taken into account. On the other hand, the ethnic Russian states were, at the time, looking to be in increasingly more challenging circumstances. The Republic of Novgorod, earlier the owner of the greatest city in all Russia, was exiled to the frozen northern lands by the Mongols. The Grand Principality of Moscow ruled over a patchwork of land reconstructed from territories ravaged by Mongolian and later Tatar invaders. Pskov, Yaroslavl, and Ryazan were simply much too small to contribute any form of military or cultural prestige to a Russian identity, and Tver’ had been ravaged by civil war for quite some time by that point. Thus, to combat the continued Horde threat, the various leaders of Russia decided to form an informal, temporary alliance with each other, as well as attempt to convince a few foreign nations, namely Hungary, Poland, and Lithuania, to assist in the ousting of the eastern heathens. On April 2nd, 1402, delegates from the Grand Principality of Tver, the Republic of Novgorod, the Grand Principality of Moscow, the Kingdom of Poland, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and representatives from the Principalities of Pskov, Ryazan, and Yaroslavl met in the city of Novgorod in a series of short, fast, and often violent conferences collectively named now as the Conference of the White Coats. The rhetoric was dirty, the aims often unclear, and the various goals almost always conflicting, but these eight nations did agree to combine their military might in any case of Horde aggression. It really would not take long. In 1408, the Golden Horde, under the leadership of Khan Temür Qutlugh, invaded the Principality of Ryazan, hoping to add the small, weak nation under their wing. Within two months, six of the seven other signatories of the Conference of the White Coats had mobilized their armies to the defense of Ryazan, the remaining member, Poland, having withdrawn both their alliance with Lithuania and their signature from the Conference of the White Coats. A massive coalition of seven armies, primarily under the leadership of the Prince of Novgorod Dmitry II Yaroslavich, was able to successfully defeat the Golden Horde’s armies back to their own territory, and together, the Alliance of the White Coats pushed on to the Horde’s capital, Saraj, and razed it to the ground, sealing the fate of the Golden Horde. From that time, the Golden Horde effectively disintegrated. Various southeastern territories joined the newly rising Nogai Khanate, the Crimean peninsula and surrounding territories seceded, and the remainder of the heavily scarred Horde was metamorphosed into the new Khanate of Kazan. The downfall of the Mongol legacy had finally happened, and it was time for the rise of Russia.

History:
Spoiler :
In late 1474, Henry IV of Castile-Leon died. His only child was his daughter Joanna, rumored to be of illegitimate parentage. Henry's half sister Isabella, husband of the King of Aragon, claimed the throne. Joanna was backed by her uncle and new husband, Alphonse V of Portugal. Though Portugal had the support of the King of France, the French were occupied with a war against England and Burdundy, meaning that the Aragonese side was stronger. This began to change after a decisive Portuguese victory at the Battle of Toro. The Portuguese leveraged the victory and their subsequent occupation of parts of Castile and claimed that these represented divine sanction for Joanna. The Isabella faction began to unravel after that, with defections eventually leading to their defeat.

Joanna became queen of Castile-Leon, with Alphonse V becoming king by jure uxoris. Together they had a single child with before Alphonse's death. Her cousin and son-in-law, João II, assumed control of both Castile-Leon and Portugal. The two kingdoms remained in control of the House of Aviz until the death of João III, who left no direct heirs. The head of the Order of Calatrava, who was the descendent of Joanna and Alphonse V, seized control of the kingdoms. It was he who formally created the Kingdom of Spain, having one overarching realm rather than two separate ones in personal union.

Maria I, queen in her own right of Spain, married an Italian nobleman, beginning the rule of the House of Savoy. Maria had two sons, Manuel and Alfonso. The two brothers got along very well. Manuel became king of Spain and duke of Savoy, while Alfonso was granted the Duchy of Seville. Manuel married into another Italian noble family, while Alfonso married within Spain. The Savoyard rule of Spain was characterized by frequent strife with France over territories in the Duchy of Savoy ruled by the French. The Savoyard focus on Savoyard territory became a point of frustration with Spanish nobles, culminating in a noble uprising that put Salvador I of Seville, Arsenio II's second cousin, on the throne. Arsenio II remained Duke of Savoy.

Salvador I's daughter, Maria II, chose a French nobleman for her husband. She only had a single child with him before he died. She died shortly afterwards. The young child was crowned Juan IV and his paternal uncle became his regent. Before long, he claimed that the child was illegitimate and that the throne had passed to him through his brother. Under pressure from French and Aragonese arms, the court of Juan IV was forced to flee into the pro-Juan colonies, where they ruled from Peru.

The French era was short. After the death of Louis I, his son took control of Spain. Louis II proved to be deeply unpopular, particularly regarding his policies towards France. When the French Revolution was about to topple that country, Louis II moved to intervene. The Spanish Intervention was an unmitigated disaster. Incompetent commanders and low morale made Spain face defeat after defeat against the French, resulting in France's annexation of Navarre.

Riding on this tidal wave of discontent, Salvador II, the king in Peru, made his move. Louis II's already shaky support crumbled, and Salvador II won the throne. At this point the French revolutionaries were being destroyed by German guns, causing the king to launch a campaign to reclaim Navarre, which proved successful.

The French Revolution nonetheless inspired revolutions in the Spanish colonies. One by one the colonies revolted away from the Crown. Eventually, the Empire of Peru was granted its independence peacefully.

It is now the year of our Lord 1900, and Salvador III reigns in Toledo.

Full Name: Empire of the Great Ming (Short names: Ming Empire, Ming Dynasty, Chinese Empire, China)
Government Type: Celestial Empire (Absolute Monarchy backed with an extensive civil service bureaucracy)
Leader: Yongli Emperor
Short History: 1421. The Heavens were pleased with the treasure fleets of the Yongle Emperor, and the moving of the imperial capital to the north in Beijing. Abated, the heavens did not send down a lightning strike, and the recently built throne room did not burn down. With no obvious sign that Celestial Bureaucracy was against the treasure fleets, China continued to look foward even after the coronation of the Hongxi Emperor. In 1424, Zheng He was sent on a 7th Expedition, heading due east into the sunrise to see what lied beyond the islands of Wa. After months out in sea, the sailor reported finding an island chain unlike any other reported. Described as a tropical paradise filled with carefree yet primitive natives. The place captured immediate attention back to Beijing, called Hawaiʻi by the natives and Tiāntáng, Paradise, by the court.

As Chinese sailing knowledge increased decades later, and the fleets were able to cross even further, the idea of setting up a tribute state in Tiāntáng fancied the Ming Empire. Envoys were sent in 1507, demanding tribute from the fledging Polynesian kingdoms. When each kingdom refused, the islands were shortly invaded, and the superior Chinese technology led to an easy conquest. At this point of time, news of a recently discovered land by Europeans reached the Mings, and they sailed forth into the deep blue sea again, hoping to find the other side of the new continent...

West Coast is to be divided so China gets Cascadia and Northern California (Probably divided somewhere at OTL Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta), Japan gets everything below it.

Since Indonesia is a "maybe" claim, I might aswell grab it, as well as the continental Southeast Asia under the khmer banner.

EDIT: I'm also grabbing parts of Chile and Tierra del Fuego.

Full name: Empire of Khmer

Capital:Angkor

Short history:

The king of the Khmer, Suryavram III, in the year 1412, decided to expand into Indonesia. He invaded the area known modern day as Vietnam in hopes to convince the population that the Khmer Empire will survive. Despite the decaying agricultural output, the khmer succesfully conquered modern day Vietnam part. This was done, however, at a large price and the Khmer Empire struggled to survive for 100 years. However, when the khmer finally mananged to get their agricultural output going to normal, they could restore themselves. The problem of the aqueducts that destroyed the OTL Khmer Empire was solved by using Vietnam as a farmland.

After that period of difficulty, the Khmer invaded the Ayutthaya in 1535. They conquered it but later Malaysa would rebel. Malaysa understood it could not fight for it's independence, and the Khmer understood they could not conquer them completely. Malaysa became a Khmer colony.

With rumors of the chinese setting up colonies in a whole new world, the khmer decided to colonize their local areas. But with the turnoil caused by Malaysa, they would have to wait 50 more years.

At last, the Khmer invaded OTL Indonesia. First, they colonized the southern philipines and then they invaded Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Due to the religious turnoil, major massacres took place. Then, they invaded Java in 1623. This time they were defeated and only grabbed a few outposts in eastern Java.

Their expeditions into the new world were not fructiferous. In first place, their navy was not as good as the chinese as it was not advanced enough to have fast sea-crossing ships. The one time they succesfully arrived to the new world was on Chile in 1672. However, due to the cold weather they were forced to stick to the coastal areas. The one exception was Tierra del Fuego, which was colonized completely but did not have a large amount of inhabitants for a century.

On the year 1683, they invaded the states north to them. They mananged to conquer Lan Xang due to it's instability and they also conquered the rest of what today composes the hold of the Khmer in mainland southeast asia.

Waiting more, in the year 1731, they invaded Java and this time they actually succeded. By 1745, the state of Sumatra, fearing invasion, sumbitted to the Khmer will. This stopped the era of expansion and began the era of stability.

The era of stability might seem named ironically first. In 1772, the old khmer dynasty died out and a civil war occured. The new king was from modern day Thailand and he began the thailandese dynasty in 1776. Under Lobpuri I the Khmer invaded and annexed Sumatra for it's support of the enemies on the civil war. He further colonized South America, expanding the colony of Tierra del Fuego and his chilenan zones. If it wasn't for his death at the age of 54 in 1783, he might have even expanded into the Patagonia or into Chile. It is well known modern day that by then, the khmer were adapted to the cold weather of the zone and were ready to expand further unlike their ancestors that lived in tropical weather. But because his succesor, Narai I, wasn't intrested in South America, the khmer colonization of the americas was halted. The only thing he did was actually allow muslim inmigration in the Americas and further give restricted freedom to muslims in the mainland.

During the rest of the thailandese dynasty, Tierra del Fuego became a khmer vassal as the Emirate of the South in 1834. The reason for this was that the majority of the population was muslim. Thus, the muslims demanded partial independence. In most part, they wanted freedom to worship their religion but also pursued for more independence. During this era, the thailandese dynasty was known for beggining to modernize. The khmer kings saw that, if the land was well-used, they could pretty well become an economic superpower.
