I'm about to build it on a different landmass than my capital & Versailles city. Will it reduce maintenance costs to the same extent that it would if it was on my continent? Lesser extent? Or not at all?

Yes-The forbidden palace will work on a different landmass to reduce your maintenance.

and welcome to CFC RDV-1992 :goodjob:[party]

Thanks nbcman. Is the reduction the same as if it was on my landmass? Or does the increase in maintenance costs for separate landmasses still apply?

The Forbidden Palace (FP) will act like another capital. There will not be an increase in the maintenance for the cities on the same landmass as the FP, Versailles, or your capital.

Doesn't it remove only the "distance from capital" maintenance costs? You are still saddled with the other maintenance costs of having cities on the other landmass.

Which add up really fast until you spin off a Colony.

Aye, but Colonial maintenance is limited by distance maintenance (I am not sure of the max, but IIRC it is 2x the distance costs). So decreasing distance maintenance can decrease Colonial maintenance, it will still be there, just lower.
And since these cities likely have higher distance maintenance anyways, this is probably the best place to build it, IF you have the hammers available. Better yet, capture someone else's Versailles.

The FP effect in my experence is much more noticable when it is on a foreign landmass. The FP is in fact single handenly brought a five city landmass from cash negative to cash positive in that game.

The FP is great to have on other land-masses then your capital... especially a large land mass where you have many cities.

Actually, the colonial maintenance is tied to distance maintenance (at least it is in 3.13) so the FP will actually reduce your maintenance MORE then it would if it was on the same landmass. Because of this, the colony feature is essentially worthless.

I always save FP for the new world. Always.

Me too, but I always build Versailles on the same continent on as my capital. It's very handy to have both because I usually have a large empire.

If I can sneak Versailles in, that usually acts as my FP for same continent.

Not to mention the high hammer cost of Versailles, especially in a new city (400 :hammers: with marble, 800 :hammers: without vs. 200 :hammers: for FP).
All in all, I love to conquer Versailles, since very rarely will I settle 3 continents (Palace, FP, and Versailles).

No need to risk any wait on Versailles. You can always move the palace. :)

Or you can capture a foreign Versailles.
Also moving your capital isn't always the best option (you may want to run Bureaucracy, though perhaps unlikely if you have two+ continents). If you have more bigger cities on your home continent it could cost you a lot of gold.

I usually only try to build Versailles on a separate land mass. I deliberately generate a great engineer for it and then chop every bit of green. If I can't have it as my colonial hq I'd rather have an AI build it since it'll save far more maintenance that way than being built next to my capital (my SOD will be visiting them soon).
