Initial Appraisal and General Plan Outline
Here are some of my first thoughts after taking my first turn and taking a look at some of my options.

    Map Comments
The map looks interesting so far -- of course I have yet to explore even my own small corner of the world. Starting on Ivory yields an extra hammer and the flood plains provide a great food source. I don't know how the other starts are, but my impression is that Krill wanted to get this game rolling right from the start and must assume that the other players received similarly 'awesome' starts.

    General Plan
My plan out of the gate is to get fishing and then build a Workboat soon as my 1st Warrior is completed. The fish are close enough to get it running on the turn the boat pops so that the loaf can be directed, straight away, into the production of a worker...he should pop on T12. I am timing my popping of that Hut to coincide with the discovery of Fishing on T5 as not to waste my research potential...I might get lucky and pop the Wheel or something.

    Research and Economy
After fishing I am currently planning on researching BW > Agriculture > AH > Writing to get access to Libraries and Scientist Specialists. I plan on running a Specialist Economy for the early game and make adjustments to that strategy due to changing conditions. I think I can get to Liberalism pretty quickly. I get half price Universities so that will be a consideration. In addition to that I am the only Philosophical leader so I should have an advantage on getting Great People.

    India Defense Force
I shall not be quite as carefree as I was in the previous game I participated in -- as evidenced by the construction of a Warrior first. That warrior, however, will serve to escort my first settler as well if I lose my starting warrior or he is too far away during scouting ops. Each city shall maintain a core set of defensive units who will possess the ability to quickly react to an enemy assault as well as barbarians. I imagine an axe, a spear and an archer should do the trick but will modify this based on the situation.

    Expeditionary Forces
I shall organize an expeditionary force as soon as possible -- after I get a production city up and running and have the fundamentals infrastructure of my empire constructed. This force will be leveraged against my weakest neighbor at the earliest possible opportunity to stunt their growth. It will likely include axes, spears, catapults and horses (if available).

    Espionage
I have been waiting to see if I could get the full first turn demographics data before the other players begin their second turn but, ATM, the PTBS server's connection is down and no one can log in. I will check this tomorrow before work and see if Azzaman and Memphus have taken their turns yet. I will be accumulating as much information I can into a Moving Chart to map changes and relative values visually...this is as much for personal experimentation as anything else.

    Game On
The game is underway. Of course you will leave comments as you see fit. Make yourself at home here in the Indian Empire -- there is always room for a few more Dalits.

    Sumeria has been defeated.

The good news is that Azzaman and I had met before he was wiped out and chatted for a moment in game. I learned the possible location of Memphus' land holdings and the location of Sumeria's, now razed, capitol.

I currently have a Woodsman II Warrior making his best time to see if there is a land bridge where Memphus can get through to the East of my lands. I hope and believe not...so I should be relativly safe from attack over there.

I also have a Woodsman I Warrior checking the Western approach for early 'Memphus Alert', additional city sites and hopefully some more exp.

As it stands Ronnie has the HiScore with 50...all other civs (including myself) have a score of 44 and have finished the turn.

I will post pictures and some plans soon as I discover whether or not I have copper. At that time there will be something for you all to mull over.

Ok well...as probably stated in the other threads we played about 30 turns together tonight. It was quick and I was posed with a challenging decision that I probably would have done better with if I took a break.

    Spoiler Border with AT :

I have met AT and negotiated a trading partnership. We have opened our borders and should be making trades soon...he should be researching alphabet. I am researching Sailing for him and I am going to trade Sailing and something else for Writing which I would be researching right now if not for the alliance.

My goal here is to build Libraries and run Scientists. My hope is that AT and I are able to work together until we're the last two standing.

    Spoiler Indian Empire :

The challenging decision I was referring to earlier came in the form of where to plop C2! In the screen above you can see that Bombay (I don't feel creative with the city names...so, whatever) is settled and at size 2 and growing. The difficulty in deciding where to plant it was in that the copper was strategically located (by Krill, I imagine) to be right in the best spot to settle...so I carefully debated, with no simulations mind you, where the best spot to put it would be where it would impact my other potential city sites the least, give earliest availability to copper and axes and would have some food.

In the shot my warrior is about to pop giving me a defender in each city... unfortunately I lost a warrior to a lion...get this. He was Woodsman I on a forested hill and fortified for two turns when attacked by a single lion...and lost. I hope that's not a foreshadowing of the Indian Military!

I don't think Memphus was the first to Religion and may be beaten to the Oracle if he doesn't get on it...I think Ronnie Founded Buddhisim (IIR-the-religion-C).

I have started building the Pyramids with no stone in Delhi and have researched Hunting to make use of the elephants it's on for the additional health...her borders should pop to size 6 in 6 turns and the Pyramids should be done in 22 turns (minus a chop...I forget how many hammers that is ATM...20, I think?).

Anyway...going for the Pyramids like that might be a gamble...I don't know. I am going for early representation for the research boost and am hoping that will pay off in the long run. I've had to put Writing on hold (via trade with AT) but am working on Hunting right now (I know I said earlier I have it...you can see in the screenshot that I do not...but the reasoning is the same as I mentioned).

    Here are my concerns ATM:
    • what to research after Hunting
    • where to plant C3

    Alright...thoughts?

Well, the best thing is usually to get an agreement with someone, let one of you research alphabet, and let the other do other useful techs (maths? metal casting?)

That's already taken care of. He should have Alpha ~10 Turns from now and we can start trading. I can bulb Math soon and am thinking that he should work on IW so we can trade those. We've also discussed MC for forges to get my engineers up sooner than later....so that might come before IW; not sure.

I'm not in it to take advantage of AT...I'm hoping to build a solid partnership with him in this game to leverage against Memphus and Ronnie. I hope he is genuine as well. Hopefully we'll be able to pull away with some smart teching and crush them with superior units. The sensitive area is getting to or near rifling before France's Musketeers are up and having a decent spearman army to deal with Ronnie's Keshiks.

The long term goal here is to set myself up as the research leader (i.e. faster research pace than AT while he goes production oriented) and use that against him once we are at odds. At that time I would be able to divert some scientists to engineers as well to match or beat AT's production capabilities.

I wouldn't be unhappy with a diplomatic victory if it came to that but I think that a Domination win can be achieved also since Azz's land is available. If I take Memphus and he takes Ronnie that should leave the door open for me to take the majority of the land.

    Of course, we'll see.

Thanks for confirming our early strategy, Dutchfire. I just hope my early building efforts don't end up costing me if Memphus is planning a rush of some kind.

We had a nice long session again last night. Below are some of the developments as they pertain to the Indian Empire. Sorry for the randomness of the below list...these events did not necessarily occur in the order listed.

    • Pyramids built in Delhi - currently running Representation.
    • Library built in Bombay - 2 scientists allocated.
    • Barb axe plundered my rice farm in Bombay -- rebuilding.
    • Vija founded, monument chopped and Library on the way.
    • Currently researching path to Literature for the Great Library. Next will be Calendar for happiness. I will likely trade this for Construction. AT already has Currency so I need to get on the ball there.
    • Will pop Great Engineer from Delhi before Great Scientist from Bombay for help in constructing the Great Library in Bombay.
    • Preparations underway to capture Barbarian city to the E of Delhi...this is in a location I was planning on settling anyway -- so saved me the settler build. I am building a galley to bring them by water. This galley will also serve to get a settler and worker up to the Moai Site.
    • Indian Defense Forces are build constructed...spearmen are an important component due to the 2 civs with Horse UUs to my SE. AT has already acquired everything he needs to start pumping them out.
    • Memphus' land discovered to the SW beyond Azz's razed capitol.
    • Expeditionary Force planning begun -- after the capture of the Eastern Barb City I will focus on building up my Eastern border in case AT and Ronnie go to war w/each other. I haven't yet decided what I will do if such a conflict were to erupt.
    • Open Borders signed with Ronnie.
    • AT denied me Alphabet and is very anal about beaker numbers matching up for trades...basically this rubbed me the wrong way and Ronnie has been a better ally. Not to mention that we are not neighbors...this fact should actually make us more natural allies.
    • Metal Casting secured. Forge to be built in Delhi following Galley.
    • Planned move of Palace to Bombay before Civil Service -- need a fourth city before it's even possible. Plan on expanding West before I have the knowledge of CS though.
    Spoiler Indian Empire Overview :

The Indian Empire, circa 825 BC.

Spoiler Land to the North :

Land to the North -- Potential Moai site marked.

Spoiler Land to the East :

Land to the East -- Shows location of Barb City and two planned city sites.

Spoiler Land to the West :

Land to the West -- Shows location of Barb City and two planned city sites.

    After Action Report
Building the Pyramids slowed my growth substantially...I currently reside on the bottom of the point spread and my GDP is quite low as well. I plan on correcting this through the use of a few cottages as well as mining the silver at the Eastern Barb Site. These won't completely correct my GDP situation, but they will give my numbers a modest boost as well as allow my other cities to grow larger, further helping my ailing GDP.

Due to tech trading with AT I arrived at Writing later than I wanted and, subsequently, begun construction and running of Science specialists in Bombay later than I wanted. This stunted my research, compounding my GDP situation. In addition I forgot to switch to Representation for a few turns which slowed me down a little as well. I don't suffer from Anarchy though so the transition was smooth.

I've located Memphus' land holdings and have observed some of his lands. I doubt that he will sign an open borders agreement with me while my axe is there so I will that that axe and move him back to a position in which I might catch an invasion army coming from his direction. Early warning is good.

And, finally, I mis-stepped a couple of times during play because I was also watching a show on TV...maybe I should have paid attention to the game a little more! Either way, I'm not too concerned though because it seems that I have a decent, if not good, ally in Ronnie and I'm already doing better than last game.

    Personal Thoughts
I think it speaks for itself though that I am a little behind the curve here. I don't think I've dedicated myself to Civ in quite the way that Memphus has -- his play, and a few other people on this team (you know who you are), reminds me of how I used to play Starcraft...but that was such a simpler game! It's pretty daunting how good some of you and others on CFC are. But I'm learning a lot from you guys so I feel that I am on the way to accomplishing my mission.

On the next turn I have 2 Axes and 1 spear ready to attack Zhou and take a worker along with it.

    Spoiler Barbarian City, Zhou :

If needed Ronnie has volunteered his co-located warrior to soften up the final warrior for my spearman to take the city with. This needs to be done quickly and deliberately so that AT doesn't decide to swoop on my prize.

AT defeated one of the warrior guards for me on his last turn, as per my request. Zhou has been captured. 4 turns of rebellion. This coincides with the 4 turns left on Literature (no city maintenance costs until after completion).

It also appears that AT might have set a trap -- I have only one Axe at 4.2 in the city and he has a City Raider II axe and another axe on the hilltop overlooking the city. I suppose we'll see if he goes for the throat or not...

Additionally, I have popped a Great Scientist and have Compass available to me. AT will complete Compass in 7 turns. Do you think I should grab it? If I do I will probably grab it when Literature is done as to mask where the points came from.

At that point I don't know if I should waste the time on Optics or let Ronnie do it -- either way Caravels would be pretty useless on this map unless I wanted the movement bonus or wanted to land spies in France.
