This is my first story and I’m definitely not a story teller. I’ll try my best to write something interesting and worth reading. Feel free to comment/criticize/suggest as I progress. Any feedback will be helpful. :goodjob:

I’ve had the idea for this story for a while but school kept me busy. Now that the finals are over, I get to work on this.

The summer has been hot and humid as usual and Orhan Gandhi has been enjoying his vacation from school. He sat on the steps of the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Delhi, watching all the foot traffic in and out of the magnificent edifice. He was kicked out of his favorite spot in the museum as that particular section was being renovated. He loved Indian history, especially the War Elephant Display and spent countless hours inside the building when ever he could.

Being the son of one of the greatest men in history has its drawbacks. Your privacy is limited as your every move is watched by personal security. Today he was lucky. He snuck out of the palace without any one noticing. He was extra careful today as he “borrowed” his father’s prized procession, the journal that contained the historical events of the great Indian nation. All the history books that he ever read at school were based on this journal. The great Mahatma Gandhi is overseas, spreading his word of peaceful coexistence, and won’t miss it any way. Orhan looked around once again, realized it is indeed safe and opened the journal.

Chapter 1 – The Beginning

4000 BC – I am Mohandas Gandhi. My distant ancestors were nomads, but over many generations they became skilled at farming, road-building and irrigation, and settled down in small communities. People have vested absolute power in me, trusting that I can build an Indian civilization to stand the test of time. This is my journal.

The artist finally finished “the Great City of Delhi” on the place wall and it looked great. He also had limited information regarding the surroundings of the city as brave explorers were hard to recruit. I have asked the artist to do future drawings and paintings. Tiger attacks were being reported to the South of the city and the Himalayas to the West were haunted by the mythical Yeti. The “abominable snowman” is said to have the ability to make itself invisible and appear at will.

3750 BC – I made a proclamation that any one brave enough to go on an exploration mission to the East will be given 10 pieces of gold. One brave warrior emerged from the crowd and said he will risk his life for the future of the Indian nation. I was overjoyed!

3700 BC – We are not alone! The brave warrior has come into contact with a native Ainu Tribe. The Ainu were amazed by the stories the warrior told…the brave new nation, peaceful leader, mythical creatures. The Ainu offered some spices that they acquired from the region and the warrior liked the taste of spices in his “curry”. He has sent recipes back to Delhi. I can’t wait for dinner! They also gave him a map of the region and sent him off on his journey.

I had hoped many new explorers to come forward after hearing the stories the warrior told. But, only one other soul came forward. I am disappointed.
IS2_3700BC.jpg
3300 BC – The fearless warriors explored the region and discovered many amazing details. We made contact with another native tribe, the Hsung-Nu, and they taught us the art of Bronze Working. A local blacksmith brought me a gift today. A copper armband and a well crafted pendant. I wore it proudly. Metal smiths all over the city were busy making new objects from bronze. Bronze tools, sculptures, daggers were becoming common.
IS3_3300BC.jpg
3200 BC – We were attacked today by savages to the east of Delhi. One of the exploring warriors intruded into a barbarian camp and was ambushed by the cannibals. These savages ignored the peaceful message and attacked the explorer, intending to make him dinner. The fearless warrior killed 3 of the attackers and barely escaped with his life. I can’t believe there are such beasts in this world. India will show how to live peacefully.

Chapter 2 – The Expansion

Orhan was fascinated by the entries in the journal...the Yeti, cannibalistic barbarians, exploration into the unknown…it was all new to him. Although he could understand why they wouldn’t want students to read a lot of this, he longed for history text books this detailed. He wondered about how the citizens of India dealt with daily lives back then. They surely would have loved the technology of the present day, he thought. He decided to go make some freshly squeezed lemonade before venturing further into the mysteries of the journal.

2270 BC – Things have changed. India has a good idea of what surrounds us. I have the courageous citizens of Delhi to thank. Some of the explorers have settled down near the Himalayas and the upstart town was called Bombay. Many men, women and children have made the trek to the new city and have called it their home. Bombay is growing. The citizens of Bombay suffered long, harsh winters but I never heard any complaints from them. The cold winters were very profitable for the fur merchants though. Fur is also very popular in Delhi. The snowy peaks of the Himalayas were supposedly a sight to see. Many reported sightings of the Yeti also came in but no one gave me enough proof to send out an exploration party into the Himalayan Mountains. I will visit Bombay one day.

2190 BC – I got word that a mystic named Lord McCauley has completed the great history of the world. According to him, my tiny nation is the 3rd wealthiest country in the world. I asked my Foreign Advisor what he thought of this. According to him, Lord McCauley is a drunk, delusional, gypsy who likes to make things up. The Foreign Advisor thinks that India is the only nation in this world and the rest are native tribes and barbarians. I suspected that the Foreign Advisor was clueless. I must find the advisor something to do as he sleeps majority of the day and all of the night.

2150 BC – India is expanding. More settlers have come forward and asked permission to settle the vast grasslands to the east. I was delighted when I heard this and we celebrated for a whole week before the settler party left. I personally sent them off on their long journey and wished them well. My Military Advisor wanted some of our warriors to escort the settlers. India simply didn’t have the resources to train men for their protection. I was very distraught and have had countless sleepless nights thinking of their well being. The settlers from Delhi followed the Ganges River east and have found suitable land on the shores of the mighty river. I was happy when I received word about the newest city of the Indian nation. Madras is born.

2030 BC – We have contact! Today I met with an envoy from King Wang Kon of the Koreans. They claim to have settled the lands south of India and that the rest of the continent is rightfully theirs. According to the envoy, India has stolen land that belonged to their ancestors but King Kon is willing to let it slide if we do not settle on any further land. I enquired about Korea’s technological advancements and was told they have made huge progress. India is technologically backwards according to him. He went on to say that the Koreans have invented something called “the Wheel” and that it has made everyone’s life a lot easier. I asked for the secrets of this technology and offered all the gold in my treasury. I was turned down. The envoy was quickly shown the door out.

1425 BC – India is starting to look like a real nation and the recently settled town of Bangalore is prospering. Many were against settling between the two peaks that made up the Sher Mountains. They still remember the stories of earlier explorers being attacked by tigers. Initially, people were afraid to venture out of their huts at night. They were also terrified of the threat that the Koreans made centuries ago. I assured every one that Korea is no King Kong as they make it out to be. They are just like those monkeys that throw twigs at you sitting high up on a mango tree. They are pesky but not a threat.

The Cultural Advisor visited me today and wanted to build temples in all of the Indian cities. She thought it was a good idea to show the world, especially the Koreans, how peaceful and religious we Indians are. He also had an idea for a grand project in Delhi. She called it the Pyramids. I saw sketches and planning information for this project and gave the thumbs up to start construction. The pundits also think that the Pyramids will help build granaries in every Indian city on the continent.
IS8.jpg

975 BC – India is now an empire. I have appointed governors in all cities as I can’t do it all by myself. Recently, India has welcomed envoys from the Ottomans and the Americans. It has become obvious that Korea does not own all the land south of our nation as they once claimed. I was told that Sultan Osman of the Ottomans was initially cautious about sending an envoy to India. Apparently, the Koreans have told him quite a lot about the backward Indians. Once I got to know Osman, we hit it off. He’s a great leader and we made the first technological trade in the history of India. We offered him the secrets of Alphabets and majority of gold in our treasury and in return we got the secrets of Mysticism and Warrior Code.

Lincoln, the fearless leader of the Americans, also sent an envoy to Delhi in the recent year. He apparently heard about peaceful nation of India from his friend Osman. He was impressed with the culture and technological progression India has made. I sent him a small sample of Spices and Furs as a gift. Maybe he will be interested in a future trade for these items.

The Cultural Advisor made an unannounced visit. She thinks the construction of Pyramids in Delhi should be abandoned and India should focus on building the Great Library instead. After a discussion with the resident pundits, I came to the conclusion that the Great Library is the way to go. According to them the Library will teach us about the marvels of the world and many things still unknown to us. Once I heard that almost no time and resources will be lost due to the switch, I made the decision to start building the Great Library in Delhi.

I also got a visit from the Military Advisor. He was a little worried about the military status of the nation. He pointed out that majority of the cities are not defended and we shouldn’t trust any of our neighbors. I told him that I have faith in the world and we wouldn’t need a military at the moment. I assured him that I will look into providing the cities with the necessary defensive support as soon as possible.

Chapter 3 – World of Wonders

850 BC – I got word that one of our explorers has reached the American city of Philadelphia. Some of the resident pundits have argued that the continent is shared by us Indians and the mighty Koreans. They simply couldn’t come to grip that there are more advanced civilizations out there. I summoned the Foreign Advisor and asked him about starting a diplomatic relationship with our neighbors. He wanted to be the diplomat and spend some time in each neighboring capital. He said it’ll be like a mini vacation considering all the hard work he was doing. I told him I’ll think about it. I put diplomatic relationships on hold for now and wait till we have a better picture of rest of the continent.

690 BC – A messenger came to the palace today with some good news. One of the brave Indian warriors has stumbled on to the small Ottoman town of Uskudar. Initially he thought it was an American city considering its location but was surprised when some cautious Ottoman citizens gave him a halfhearted welcome. Apparently, the Ottomans have had a tough couple of centuries as the original city of Uskudar was destroyed by a very active volcano. The few that were left after the disaster packed up and left the “Valley of Ruins” and built a new city in memory of the old one. They find it a struggle to survive in the new city as it’s close to impossible to grow any food in that mountainous region. Upon hearing about the devastation, I asked the Trade Advisor to make arrangements to send the citizens of Uskudar some much needed food supply.

IS12.jpg

650 BC – The relationship with Korea has been stressful. King Kon recently sent an envoy to Delhi and complained about Indian religious propaganda in the border cities. I assured the Korean envoy that India has no such intentions. In a meeting with my Cultural Advisor, she informed me that the Korean city of P’yongyang is building the Temple of Artemis. She was concerned about the intentions of the Koreans as P’yongyang is a border city. I wonder if the Koreans are sending a message.

550 BC – It was a glorious year for the Indian nation. The Great Library has finally been finished in Delhi. I made a visit to the magnificent structure recently and found scholars from all over the continent discussing and sharing ideas. The influx of local and foreign scholars to the Great Library has made technological advancements easier and faster. Polytheism was one of the technological advancements as a result of one of the groupthink sessions.

I have ordered that no more resources be spent on research. Many voiced their displeasure with this move. I heard arguments from the Scientific Advisor and the resident pundits that India can not depend on the local and foreign scholars visiting the Great Library for technological knowledge. In the end, they reluctantly agreed with my move.

I was informed that the mysterious Vikings of distant lands have finished The Oracle in the city of Trondheim. The Koreans and Ottomans have now stepped up the race to build the great Temple of Artemis. I have learned that both nations have moved the construction to their respective capitals. I summoned the Foreign Advisor to the palace and discussed the foreign diplomatic situation. It was decided that he will indeed go to each neighboring capital and establish better relations. The Foreign Advisor was happy that he was finally getting a vacation. I gave him a nice sendoff and presented him with a strong donkey for the long and arduous trip. After an hour of steering the poor animal in the wrong direction in the palace courtyard, the Foreign Advisor was off on his journey.

When I heard that we have news about the Foreign Advisor, I cringed. Thankfully, it was good news. He managed to establish Indian embassies in Istanbul, Seoul and New York. The great American leader, Lincoln, even gifted him a horse for the trip back to Delhi. But, my Foreign Advisor has apparently decided to stick to donkeys as it hurts more when he falls from a horse. He has also learned that Istanbul will finish the Temple of Artemis in 28 turns while Seoul l is hopelessly behind at 39 turns. I have told the Cultural Advisor to scrap any plans to build this wonder as India cannot build the great Wonder ahead of its neighbors.

290 BC – Delhi has finished the great wonder Mausoleum of Mausollos. Another magnificent milestone for the Indian nation as the citizens are happy with the progress we have made. I could see the magnificent structure from my palace and it was a sight to see.

My Foreign Advisor is back from his diplomatic mission and comes to visit with many gifts. I heard a rumor that he has also brought several bottles of moonshine back from America although he denied it. He comes with grand plans for further world exploration. He wants to build a Curragh and sail the sea. He is now an avid admirer of Lord McCauley and talks highly of the sage. I gave him permission to go ahead with his plans. I wouldn’t mind my Foreign Advisor in a boat in the middle of the sea.

When I heard that he has built a Curragh in the eastern costal city of Indus in 250 BC, I was perplexed. I never thought he would go through with his attempt to sail the ocean in a vessel slightly bigger than a canoe. I was wrong. When I arrived in Indus on the day of sail, my Foreign Advisor was proudly standing next to his newly built Curragh. When he finally climbed in, some of the locals pushed the vessel into the water and the launch was a success. That was the only successful part of the whole hoopla as the Curragh sunk in the high waters about a mile from the shore. The Foreign Advisor was luckier than the vessel as he was quickly picked up by fishermen in the area. I wouldn’t have minded letting him explore the dark depths of the sea.

50 BC – Many wonders have been built and many advances have been made in the world but India has had no part in these developments. In 130 BC, there were two wonders built: Temple of Artemis in Istanbul (Ottoman Empire) and the Pyramids in Karakorum (Mongols). The Hanging Gardens of Bursa was built in 110 BC by the Ottomans. I have also just received word that the nation of Spain has built the Colossus in Barcelona.

My Science Advisor came to the palace and he was very concerned about the technological direction India was heading. I was informed that the scholars at the Great Library have failed to discover a new technology in quite a while. Funding for research is non existent and I wondered if the resident pundits were right about not cutting off resources to research new techs. Is the Great Library broken? I have come to know that the majority of scholars were at the Foreign Advisor’s shack, drinking moonshine and listening to his adventures. I screamed obscenities that I thought I never knew. Time to put him on another Curragh.

Back in 370 BC, Ottomans were said to have drafted a new form of government called Monarchy. I was very interested in learning how this govt. worked but Osman refused to share the information. I was amused when I recently found out that neither America nor the Koreans have bribed Osman into giving this information to them. While India, Korea & America were struggling as Despotic kingdoms, Ottomans were thriving as a Monarchy. I summoned the Domestic Advisor and asked her to draft a better form of government. I made sure she had enough funding and made it clear that it be done quickly.

To be continued...

For those who are wondering, I did try to cross the ocean with a Curragh...twice(effects of not playing C3C for a while). :p

Awesome Keep Going! :goodjob: With more pics! Also conque r the world. I need to read a stry about India conquring the world after the election.

Chapter 4 – Strife in the Monarchy

Orhan stops reading the journal as something out in the streets catches his attention. He stands up on the steps of the museum to get a better look. A man in dirty old clothes was being chased by local policemen. He looked vaguely familiar. Aah, it is Johnny Damon that he reminds me of, Orhan exclaimed. But it couldn’t be him as the great baseball player now plays for the Yankees. They finally catch up with the man and haul him off in the paddy wagon. Orhan lets out a sigh of relief as he was terrified of being kidnapped by such lowlifes. He usually doesn’t have to worry about such things as his personal security is always watching over him. But not today. He chuckled at the thought of them searching high and low inside the palace trying to find him.

Orhan decided to take a break from the journal and decided take a stroll inside the museum. He headed for the section that had the display of a Curragh. He stood in amazement at how small it was. The Foreign Advisor was surely not the sharpest knife in the drawer, he thought. An attempt to cross the vast Indian Ocean in this little thing was simply suicidal. He moved on to the sections that had displays of ancient Korean weaponry. Many of these items were found in a recent dig near Seoul. The swords glistened as he approached them and he can almost touch them. If only there was no glass case to protect them, he thought. Some of the armor that was on display was damaged heavily. To him, it was inconceivable that people actually fought wars wearing this heavy armor. After wandering the Museum for a bit, Orhan settled down in a quiet corner. He was soon lost in the world of his father’s journal.

50 AD – I am now a King and the modest Indian nation that was born on the shores of Ganges is now a Monarchy. I was very reluctant to assume the throne as it doesn’t fit my humble upbringing and the values that I cherish. But, the citizens of India want me as their King, one that will guide them in a world that is still fairly unknown. I will be their pillar of strength, a proponent of peace and unity. There were some that thought Monarchy was not for India and that caused a brief period of anarchy. But my subjects quickly realized that their lives have vastly improved since the switch to Monarchy. It was a time of celebration.

The Great Library has finally become a think-tank again, thanks to the Military Advisor. He offered to take care of the moonshine problem and whatever he did seems to have worked. I was informed that the scholars have come up with a new way to trade commodities – Currency. They have also drawn up an outline for rules and regulations for the citizens of India. We now have Code of Laws.

70 AD – India is one city bigger now. The oppressed citizens of P’yongyang decided that they are better off being a part of India. The Military Advisor briefed me on the situation as King Wang Kon of Korea is steaming about India opening its arms to the “treacherous traitors” of P’yongyang. Initially, King Kon wanted the control of the city returned and threatened retaliation if India refused. He has since backed down from his threat and is willing to negotiate. He wants the entire Indian treasury for P’yongyang. I told him I’ll think about it. I was also informed that the residents of the city have to be protected from the Korean threat. There were reports of the Korean military harassing the citizens that reside in the outskirts of the city. Where is the Foreign Advisor, I wonder? This sticky situation could have been solved with a short pony ride to Seoul.

250 AD – The relationship with Korea is going south. After hearing about the prosperous life of their relatives in P’yongyang, the citizens of Inch’on has decided to join the humble Indian Monarchy. King Kon is steaming and has cut ties with India. He has refused to renew the Right of Passage treaty that we’ve had for ages. I don’t like this one bit. He has also thrown out a friendly warrior that was exploring the region near the Korean city of Wonson.

It was also brought to my attention that Sultan Osman has kicked out another Indian explorer off Ottoman lands. The friendly warrior was merely chatting up one of the cute girls in the country side and it seemed to have stirred things up. I don’t blame the warrior as he didn’t know it was one of Osman’s daughters. I have ordered that all exploration be halted and every one brought back to Delhi. India does not need more enemies.

400 AD - I have given the Military Advisor the necessary resources to build adequate defense in the cities and train enough units to deter any Korean aggression. Indian cities have started to train horsemen and border cities are being well fortified. I was informed that the citizens of P’yongyang are reporting massive Korean troop movement near the area. I have asked more units be sent near the Korean borders. At first, the Indian troops were unorganized and in disarray. I asked the Military Advisor to solve this problem and it was decided that we need a leader to lead the men and women that has sworn to protect the Monarchy. Asoka was the man for the job.

A young man of royal decent, Asoka was a born leader. He was one of the first to join the ranks of the Indian troops. I have decided to make him a General and the decision was supported by the Military Advisor. The troops will need a leader as the humble Indian nation has never experienced war. As the reality of an impending Korean attack is sinking in, the country braces for war.

A messenger arrived at the Royal Palace in Delhi today and had information dealing with the Foreign Advisor! He was apparently in rehab for a while but escaped in the middle of the night. He has stolen a galley near the city of Indus and has set sail in the Indian Ocean. I am worried that he might actually discover a land mass. The last thing India needs at the moment is a drunken Foreign Advisor bringing the message of peace, love and bottled moonshine to foreign lands.

Chapter 5 – A Nation under Siege

A General is the safeguard of the nation. - Sun Tzu

410 AD – The year started out with a bang as I was informed that the suicidal Foreign Advisor and his galley have found land. He managed to cross the Indian Ocean in the small galley and have made contact with the Carthaginians. Apparently, the galley was destroyed and he was beached. A warrior, who was scouting the coast, found him lying unconscious on the beach, covered with seaweed. Initially, the Carthaginians thought he was a monster who emerged from the depths of the ocean as he couldn’t speak with all the seaweed covering his face. But the Foreign Advisor managed to win over the petrified natives with a good old bottle of moonshine. He also managed to establish an Indian embassy in the capital, Carthage. He was given a tour of the great wall that was under construction in the capital and was told it will be finished in 25 turns. After several days in Carthage, the great Carthaginian leader Hannibal gifted him a new galley and gave him a hearty sendoff.

I have learned that the mysterious Mongols have finished a Statue of Zeus in Ta-Tu. I was also informed that a new form of government is becoming popular in the continent. Republic, as it was called, gives the citizens the right to elect a leader, improve commerce and decrease corruption. The scholars at the Great Library are drafting an improved version of the Republic, one that befits the Indian nation. The final draft and the constitution are expected to be presented for approval in a matter of days. In a meeting with top advisors, minus the Foreign Advisor, we discussed the option of India becoming a Republic. Every one, except the Military Advisor, was for the switch. They all agreed that I will be elected as the Prime Minister as the Indian nation trusts me to lead them in this chaotic world. Chaos, I asked? Other than the minor skirmishes with the barbarian hordes in the beginning, we have had a peaceful existence.

I spoke too soon. It was one of the palace guards that rushed in with the horrifying news – The Koreans have declared war!

Chapter 5 continued…

Incredulity makes a smart man irrational. Threatened by an Indian border that is not far from his capital and its negative cultural influence on his cities, King Kon decides to go on the offensive. I was briefed about the incursion by my Military Advisor and it was the former Korean city of P’yongyang that was under attack. I was told that the Korean military is pillaging and burning every thing in their path near in the outskirts of the city. They have also rounded up many of the villagers and have transported them back to Korea. Majority of the prisoners were former Korean citizens who rebelled against Seoul not long ago. I have been told that the Koreans intend to make an example of them, starting with a public whipping.

I met with the Military Advisor privately and he assured me that India is very much capable of defending itself. He was adamant about going on the offensive rather than taking up a defensive posture. He was also confident in the abilities of the newly appointed General Asoka. I was not so sure about it and wanted to send an envoy to Seoul. Unfortunately, Wang Kon was not interested in talking peace and even refused to acknowledge the Indian envoy.

Destruction, death, pain & suffering are what results from war and I cringe at the thought of it. I’m just a humble spiritual leader who was put in charge a nation that needed leadership and guidance. I decided to leave all the military planning and details to the Military Advisor. I made him promise that he would do every thing in his power to minimize civilian and troop casualty. It has to be done, I told myself. Our citizens have to be protected. So it was decided – India will hit back.

It did not take long for General Asoka to draw up a viable counter attack plan. The plan was simple – divide and conquer. It was assumed that Korea does not have the resources to defend a counterattack on multiple fronts. Indian attack forces consisted of Horsemen, Swordsmen, Spearmen, and Catapults. The Indian units amassed near P’yongyang and were divided into two armies. General Asoka led the larger army south towards the capital city of Seoul. The smaller army headed east towards Cheju. Korea was under siege.

IS23.jpg

IS24.jpg

IS25.jpg

420 AD – The Eastern Expedition has reached Cheju and the battle was quick and decisive. The city was hit hard by the Indian catapults and the Koreans simply didn’t have an answer for them. The Indian units just overwhelmed the Korean defense which consisted of a few Spearmen and a couple of Archers. What surprised the troops was the welcoming they got from the Korean citizens when they entered the city center. The Indian troops were treated as liberators and the wounded were given medical attention. I am starting to realize how much the Koreans hate the oppressive government of Wang Kon.

430 AD – Preparations for the attack on Seoul has begun. Troop morale was high, especially after the news of the fall of Cheju had reached them. General Asoka ordered the bombardment of the city defenses and the units garrisoned inside the city. He meanwhile organized the army and had placed himself quite alone, a few paces in front of his Horsemen. He drew his sword and raised it. As the war horn sounded, he led the charge and thus began the biggest battle of the Korean War. The city was well defended with 5 Spearmen and 3 Archers and the Korean catapults bombarded the advancing Indian army every chance they got. The battle was fierce but the Indian army fought with courage and valor. Korean defense was in disarray but they held off the Indian troops for a while. In the end, the superior tactics of the Indian army overwhelmed the Koreans. Indian swords cut through the Korean defense like butter. Seoul has fallen, a crippling blow to Wang Kon and Korea.

IS26.jpg

450 AD – After the fall of Seoul, General Asoka split up the Southern Expedition into two divisions. One division headed west towards Pusan while the other division was sent further south towards Paegam. Meanwhile, I was informed that the Eastern Expedition has successfully captured the costal city of Taejon. Korea is in trouble.

460 AD – In a meeting with the Cultural Advisor, a proposal to build the Great Wall in Delhi was laid out. In her opinion, the wall will help defend the city if the Koreans ever reached the city steps. The Great Wall would be the first step in building a wall in every city on the continent. After the war with Korea started, the country has been focused mainly on the war efforts. After much deliberation, Delhi has abandoned the build of a coliseum and has started the construction of the Great Wall.

560 AD – Korean cities fell left and right to the advancing Indian armies. They had to defend cities on 3 fronts now and simply weren’t prepared for the Indian attack. Ulsan, the new Korean capital, fell in 470 AD. The cities of Wonsan, Hyangsan, Paegam, Kaesong, Pusan, and Pyongsang (capital) soon fell into Indian hands.

The once promising Korean empire is now down to 3 cities. I asked that all military offensive against Korea be halted. An envoy was sent to the new Korean capital Namp’o with a peace offer. Wang Kon was relieved to end the war and agreed to begin peace talks. A peace treaty was signed in a meeting in the American city of New York soon after. Per the agreement that was signed, control of Korean cities Manp’o & Chonju was transferred over to India. Wang Kon also agreed to pay 5 gold per turn as restitution for the damage Korean troops inflicted on Indian cities and its citizens. The wildfire that threatened to burn the Indian empire has been extinguished.

Chapter 6 – The Indian Republic

580 AD – The peace accord with Korea has been signed and I am now back in Delhi. Even though the trip to New York was on official business, I enjoyed being in the great American city. Prime Minister Lincoln is truly one of the greatest leaders of the world. He was also an integral part in persuading Korea to end war and I thanked him for that. I was very much impressed with the way he ran the country and the freedom enjoyed by his citizens.

I met with my advisors and it was agreed that India will go ahead and become a Republic. The constitution has already been drafted while I was away and I asked the Domestic Advisor to get things rolling. It was Election Day. Will my citizens approve of me and unanimously elect me as their new Prime Minister as many pundits predicted? I should be since I am the only candidate.

The results came in and to my surprise I only got 90% of the votes. According to the Domestic Advisor, many of the nobles were not happy about India becoming a Republic and they voted for General Asoka as a write-in candidate. I was dismayed at the turn of events but was happy to become the Prime Minister of the biggest Republic in the world. Prime Minister Gandhi…it has a nice ring to it.

My first act as the Prime Minister was improving diplomacy with the nations of the world. The galley that changed the outlook of the world has made contact with new nations. In 440 AD, the galley reached the Scandinavian city of Molde. Even though the Vikings welcomed the Foreign Advisor, they were very suspicious of him. A man in Carthaginian clothing claiming to be from the distant nation of India was heavily scrutinized by their leader, Ragnar Lodbrok. In the end, the wit and charm of the Foreign Advisor won him over. An Indian embassy was established in Trondheim, the Viking capital.

In the year 520 AD, the galley had made contact with another passing vessel near a Scandinavian city. Initially, the Foreign Advisor thought it was another Viking fishing vessel but was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a Mongol exploration galley. The Indian Foreign Advisor did all of the talking. He shared many great stories with the Mongol explorer. He told about the time he single handedly held off barbarian hoards near Bombay, the escape from the clutches of countless sharks on the day of sail, leading the Indian army to victory near P’yongyang. The poor Mongol sap took the torture in stride. He nodded his head and smiled at the Foreign Advisor as if he could understand what he was saying. The Mongol explorer will never forget the day that he met the nutcase who spoke gibberish.

In 560 AD, India was dealt a minor blow when the Great Wall was built in Carthage. It would not have been of much consequence but for the fact that Delhi would have finished it the next turn. As a result, Delhi ended up building the biggest and most expensive Coliseum in the world. According to my Cultural Advisor, many grand projects have since been started and completed around the world. The very much unknown Spaniards have built the Great Lighthouse in Barcelona and the Carthaginians are building the Sun Tzu’s Art of War in one of their great cities. They seem to be very secretive with this project as they are unwilling to share the technology (Feudalism) required for building it.

740 AD – India has become one of the biggest and wealthiest nations in the world. My approval % has gone up to 95% and the citizens wanted to build me a new Palace in the city of Madras. When I heard about this, I politely declined and the construction was switched to the Knights Templar. Relationships with other nations on the continent have improved although Wang Kon is still furious at me. India has an active trade going with the Ottoman Empire in which they send us Incense and gold in return for Spices and secrets of Literature. We have also recently learned the secrets of Feudalism, Chivalry and Monotheism from the scholars at the Great Library. The Age of Mammoths was here.

Chapter 7 – Age of Mammoths

770 AD – As I was about to go spend some time at the recently completed Forbidden Palace in the city of Bengal, I received some disturbing news from my Military Advisor. The Knights Templar is rumored to have been established in Madras. But, no one has yet to provide me any proof of the existence of this order of Knights. Some say they are warriors sworn to protect the nation. Others insist that they’re just monks. Either way, they have to be stopped. India doesn’t need to be protected by any such order, I told my Advisor. I have asked him to dig deep into this rumor and find out if there is indeed such an organization in existence.

780 AD – I have received word that the Foreign Advisor and his suicide galley has reached the Spanish port city of Logrono. I never imagined that the day would come when I was proud of my Foreign Advisor. I always thought he was a dunce, the weakest link among my circle of advisors. I expected him to be the owner of donkey courier establishment at this point but he has proven me wrong. I have decided to let him sail the rest of the world before demanding that he come back to Delhi and resume his duties.

I was itching to tell my friend Abe Lincoln about the existence of the 2nd continent and the many nations India has established relationships with. But, I was advised against it due to strategic reasons. I will invite Abe to Delhi one day and we will share many stories but it will have to wait.

800 AD – I was startled by the roar of an elephant outside my Palace and decided to investigate. Was I hallucinating? Is it a dream? I was petrified when I saw the giant beast inside the Palace courtyard. I tried screaming for help but nothing came out. I was too shocked to move and watched the animal staring at me intently. I was shaking uncontrollably or was some one shaking me? Thankfully, it was just my Military Advisor trying to wake me from the state of trance. I quickly glanced down at my pants. Whew! It was not wet.

The idea of using elephants as a weapon in war was not new but no one was ever crazy enough to try it…until now. My Advisor has brought an elephant and its trainer from the distant city of Punjab for a little demonstration. According to him, elephants can be trained to do many things. The trainer then asked the beast to bow down. I was stunned when the elephant listened and bowed down before me. Did I just regain some of the dignity that I lost earlier? I must have since I’m feeling more confident but not confident enough to go any closer to the animal. I was happy with where I was standing. The demonstration continued and the elephant did every thing the trainer asked it to do. Is capturing and training hoards of elephants feasible, I wondered. If it can be accomplished, it will be the best weapon India will have to deter any future enemy attacks. Who would want a War Elephant coming at them during war? I know I wouldn’t. I glanced down at my pants one more time just to make sure it was not wet.

The age of mammoths is here. May the almighty be with the enemy that is foolish enough to challenge India.
