I'm rather new to the game, and I have a few questions that weren't addressed in the manual or the FAQ (AFAICT). Any help would be much appreciated :)

(1) Does anyone know the specifics on what changes in the various difficulty levels? I gather from some posts that its not just enhanced AI, but rather the addition of "production advantages". Anyone have details?

(2) After workers clean pollution, my cities don't return to using the tile until after the population grows (unless I place the farmer manually). Is there any way to make this happen, or am I SOL?

(3) Is there a hotkey that will take me straight to the Civilopedia?

(4) Are there any downloadable mods/maps that you all would consider essential?

Thanks,
-ollie-

1. I believe the difficulty levels limit the speed of the AI's researching capability as follows:

cheiftain: AI is 2x slower
warlord: 1.5x slower
regent: same speed as you
monarch: 1.5x faster
emperor: 2x
diety: 2.5x? (not sure)

2. if you have your city's governor active, it'll do it for you. just tell it to emphasize food, commerce, or production. it does a decent job when you tell it to manage citizens moods too.

3. dont know that one

4. alot of the new graphics are quite good. especially:
the new wonder splash graphcis
the tidier railroad graphics
the mood badges

The effects of changing the difficulty can be found in the editor-if the patch has been installed. Run the program civ3edit.exe, Then go to rules and look up the difficulty level tab. I don't think there is anything there about research speed though.

There may be some other changes such as diplomatic stances of the computer opponents, but I'm not absolutely sure.

Oh, and I'd recommend a look at Thunderfall's less yellow terrain modpack. I find it much easier on the eyes ;)
