Inspiring News from Myanmar

Obviously not oppressive enough!

I've been keeping an eye on this the past few weeks. There were protests due to fuel price hikes. I didn't think people could stand up to the military.

However, the military probably wants to stay in power and is competent enough to have stayed in power this long. If an uprising could overthrow them, you'd think it would have happened by now. But then why would the military be afraid of cracking down on the monks?

Maybe they're not as strong as people think, or maybe they think they can survive the protests without losing anything.

It is only beautiful until the army opens fire, then it becomes ugly and tragic.

The real questions are how much the leadership controls the troops, how united the leadership is and whether or not some outside force (China) is leaning on them to handle the situation in a way that is contrary to their inclinations.

The name was changed to Myanmar some years back. And the capital is no longer at Rangoon either. It was moved inland.

I haven't heard much about Chinese influence on the region. I do know that ASEAN and the US have been pressuring them to restore their democratically elected government.

It's the name given by the illegitimate government and the new capital was created by them.

I second.

Myanmar was a new name created by an illegitimate government.

Acknowledgment of the name and the capital would be like endorsing their actions.

So it'll always be Rangoon, Burma to me.

Wether you acknowledge it or not, it doesn't change the fact that the reality is, that's what is name is, and where it's capital is right now. So yeah whatever....

It's reported that some soldiers are shaving their heads in preparation to pose as monks and cause outbreaks of violence, which will be cracked down upon.

Damn... I wish people here in the states could be like that and get off there butts when somthing offends them.

You mean like the tyranical Iraq regime? That offended us and we did something about it. Something tells me that you were not refering to the liberation of the Iraqi people though. I wonder what the "coalition of the willing" would look like if the US invaded Burma.

To mods: Could we please get this thread merged with the other one on the same subject?

Actually, in Burmese "Myanma" is a formal name used to refer to the country that had been in use since the 12th century while "Bamar" is colloquial. All the junta did was changing the English spelling of the name from "Burma" which they saw as a relic from the colonial era to "Myanmar".

Just read somewhere that military started firing on people and there have been arrests in Rangoon..

Troops outside Sule Pagoda opened fire at 2pm on Wednesday on Buddhist monks marching to the shrine. Reports conflict, bu
at least one monk was killed and another two either injured or killed. Other preliminary reports say that another three monks were shot and killed in Ahlone, a suburb of Yangon.
Riot police also beat monks and protesters with batons, fired tear gas into crowds and let off warning shots over the heads of protesters, symbolically in front of Yangon's famed Shwedagon Pagoda. Dozens of protesters were reportedly arrested and dragged away into military trucks.

If the reports were credible, I think it would be linked on drudgereport.com by now. Hope it was just rumor.
