Being sent a link to a new forum today really made me think of this idea. This forum he sent me has, in addition to post count, as system called "dollars". Each post you make is given an amount of "dollars", which can be used to add color to your title and to buy avatar privilages. You earn "dollars" by making quality post.

The whole idea im trying to propose is a way to inspire quality posting as compared to quanity.

Why would extra options that fail to add anything of real importance make peoole make quality posts?

Civilization Gaming Network does this, I believe.

And I don't like the idea. Seems like it could turn into too much of a popularity contest, developing into rivalries and alliances. Yes, I know that sounds silly, but I'm not talking about this forum turning into a Survivor game or anything; I'm just saying that I doubt the ratings would always be 100% accurate of post quality. Relations to other posters, among the mood you're in and your personal opinions and other things, would come into play. Also, if people are desperate for the cool features, they could create DLs and rate themselves highly.

Remember back when the C&C forums had thread ratings, and some people abused it? If every post of our entire site was like that, the problem would be out of control.

Mods don't have the time and energy to evaluate every single post...

Posters can't be trusted to do so... in a nominally objective manner. I'm not even sure if mods can be trusted to do so...

Not such a good idea, methinks. ;)

The way is works is something they've added into the code. It is done automatically.

Right so how does a computer tell a quality post? I really hope its not based on the length on the post as that could well lead to the news thread, where you get to post whole articles. Quality!

How in the Seven Hells can a post be judged qualitively using coding and automation? :)

if this idea were to blossom- could we have tags?

Reading over the posts there, it seems like that system is a desperate plea for them to post something other than "omg thet tang r00lz".

I bet is has something to do with post length, sentence length, word length, low use of passive voice, and probably spelling errors. If that was true, we could be posting run-ons with long words that mean nothing and get high "quality" posts.

 I got that feeling also. My friend is one of the mods over there, and he was talking about them being in the process of cleaning the place up. Trying to inspire quality, which was the real point of dicussion in this thread, not that site. ;)

In the end this idea wouldn't exactly have a big impact here then as the quality is in general quite high already and it would surely be difficult for the system to truely affect people who already have large post counts and may automatically gain all the privileges...

Just ban anyone that has an average of fifteen posts or higher. ;)

what he said

and automatic one wouldn't work. can't possibly work.

Oh, it's done automatically?

Well, unless "automatically" implies the use of cool radioactive slave monkeys, I still say no.
