Installation Order

I have vanilla, warlords, and beyond the sword...I was wondering what I should install...Do they all stack on each other's features. Does BTS simply turn Warlords into a useless coaster?

Can I just install a BTS patch or do I have to patch vanilla first? etc

You'll need to install Civ IV "vanilla" first, then BtS. You only need Warlords and its CD if you want to play its scenarios (the one where you play as the barbarians is kind of fun).
