I just bought a gtx 580 3gb card and have a question about installing it. It requires a 6 pin & 8 pin connection to the psu but I only have 2 6pin cables.

Can I use the 6pin to 8pin adapter that came with the card? Will it do? Or should I buy a proper 8pin cable for it?

Thanks in advance for any advice : )

Here in Cambridge there's a store called Micro Center that does sell them. But thanks! I'm glad to hear the adapter will do. : )

A 6-pin PCIe connector plugged into an 8-pin will work just fine as the pinout is not that different. The problem is, that the card may draw so much power that you do need the extra wiring from the 8-pin connector. The 6-pin connector (and its cable) may have too high of a resistance which will cause it to heat up.

I'd rather be safe than sorry. I think I may just pick the 8 pin cable.

Thanks again for the help.

If it is modular then picking up an eight pin is a good move

I actually found a 8 pin connector in my box of misc computer parts. So I'm all set. Thanks for the replies.

Now I can play civ 4 and 5 in 3d. And, if anyone is wondering...it is awesome!

My (now) old GTX 260 can play both just fine too :)

Im glad you're happy with your card though. Make sure you blow out the dust monthly and keep temperatures in check!
