International (IRL) popularity of Civ IV

So the other day I tweeted about Civ and checked out the #civ4 tag. I wasn't expecting the majority of the tweets in the list to be in Japanese!

This started me wondering - what are the global demographics of Civ players? Where is it particularly popular? What are the main non-English speaking Civ IV communities on the WWW? Are there any informal 'international' contests and tourneys and such that pit together players from communities that speak different languages? Are there any multilingual players organising 'international' diplo/demo games? So many questions!

well, we could start by making a poll here, which continent people are from (unless they are on archipelagoes ), but it might count alot of asian people out, coz of the english only forum (though there are some)

My computer's KIA at present, but a modest demo game with each Civ made up of speakers of that Civ's native tongue and a bunch of multilingual admins acting as interpreters as diplomats post messages in English, German, French, Spanish, Russian and Japanese could be great fun

I do not really know, but it is pretty international where I am, at least from your perspective. You want to do a UN simulation?

Yes, there are quite a lot of international Civ4 communities.

I know about Russian, French, German, Spanish, Polish. Still, English is the international language for playing MP - on the lobby and on pitboss.

About international Civ4 demo games, there were. Right now, there is ongoing Inter-Site Democracy Game (ISDG), where players from 9 different sites/communities play against each- other in MP game played on Pitboss server. Those teams are Team CFC, Realms Beyond, CivPlayers, WePlayCiv, Apolyton - all international English speaking communities, and then Spanish Apolyton, CivFR, Uciv, CivDE.

We asked one big Chinese site to join the game, but they never replied.
