Hello, all!

I have been having a problem with my internet. Well, I think so in any case.

I have DSL, it comes in, goes through the Linksys Modem thingie, and then through a router to my computer, and my parents in another part of the house. Now, i know for a fact that everything works as it should, as my parents computer has Internet all the time.

The problem, I think, is my computer. Everything worked fine until a couple days ago, when i decided to move my computer to a different, more convenient location. So I unplugged everything, moved the computer, and then plugged everything back in. Fine, everything works - except for the Internet. And all i did was unplug it, and them plug it in against a few minutes later.

Currently, the Internet doesn't work when I turn on my computer for the first time. through experimenting, I have found that it only will work if I restart the computer several times, usually about 2-6 times. I suspect that my Network card is unhappy. I have had my computer for more then 2 years. Basically, i am looking for help. Does anybody have advice, or know what is going on?

I would greatly appreciate it.

If you have a laptop computer. I would strongly recomend getting a wireless hub and a wireless card (if your labtop computer did not came installed with one), that way you dont have to deal with any wires to contend to.

In experiance, I think something is not pluged into the eathernet wall outlet (I would not know since I have Cable Internet)

did you switch the port on the router (ie. put the cable in a different plug)?

Is it a wireless router? you may have a dead spot.

If neither, you may have damaged the cable. try a different one.

No, not a laptop, just a regular, big, noisy Desktop.

There is only one port, or whatever its called, the place where you plug in the Network cable, in my tower, I plugged it in there.

The Cable is fine, I know that for a fact. I have other cables that i know work, I switched them all around, nothing. The only thing I find that works is to restart the thing over and over again, and just hoping that everything works one of those times.

I really think its the Network card, I just don't wanna go through the hassle of replacing it if i am not 100% sure.

Wireless, hmm, I don't know enough about that. In any case, it wouldn't work, because i share the Internet through a wired router with my parents computer, and I don't think that the wireless would reach that far.

Does your motherboard have an integrated network connection? If so then maybe you have plugged the cable into the wrong socket.

I have done something similar with my monitor in the past. ie. plugged it into the mobo socket instead of the graphics card, then wondered why the screen was black.

Is it only the internet that ain't working or is the network in general?

If it's only the internet then it's an error on the router, probably DHCP.

If it's the network in general it's your card. In that case you could try to just plug it out and back in once (while the pc is off of course :p) and make sure it fits neatly while you fasten the screw.

I got issues like that way back with my GeForce MX and a bad mobo socket.

Have you tried turning off the modem and router for 30 seconds and then turning them back on? Sometimes a simple reset of the two will set everything right.

Agree with Jeratain. That probably takes care of dhcp hiccups as well.
Turn off both, and/or deactivate your ethernet card and reactivate it - accessable via control panel -> network connections...

@ Zakharov - Nope, only one port, or place to plug in the Ethernet Cable

@ DaEezT
- The Internet Works fine, i know that because the other computer on the Network can access the internet just fine, anytime.
- It is not the router, as I said before, the router routes to my parents computer upstairs, and it works fine.
- I am thinking it is the Card. i will explain a bit below what the current situation is.

@ jeannie - been there, done that, no change. All ports of the router work fine, since they direct the internet to the other computer on the router.

@ Jeratain - Yes. No difference. And, like I have been sying, the Internet still goes to the other computer just fine. Before and after i shut things off and plug them back in again.

@ Paalikles - Hmm, I will try that . . .

To Everybody,

Thanks for your help, but i think the situation is better. Today, the Internet worked the first time that i turned on my computer, and, for the past 2 days, restarting the computer once has made everything work. Whatever the problem is, it seems to be fixing itself.

Thanks a lot for all your help, if it acts up again, then i will ask more question. in the meantime, i should get a new network card . . . that HAS to be the problem.
