The * by your name means you are invisible. Don't worry, its not visible to the general population

On GCF when a user is invisible, I (the admin) can see them, with a star by their name. I presume that vbulletin is using a similar feature, and you that requires that you see yourself with the *.

I can understand it for admins to see other invisible users. Just strikes me as pointless to see myself as an invisible user - I mean you know you're in the forums right and invisible?

They probably show you anyway the same reason why they show what you voted for in the polls, memory loss.

Previously only admins can see invisible users, but now moderators can also see invisible users.

That's about it. Normal users can't see other invisible users.

Not quite sure you would want to be invisible. If your posting, obviously we know you are here. If you aren't then it doesn't really matter if we know you are here or not.

I can only see invisibility having any viable uses besides being used by Admins and Mods.

Well, if you don't want people to know where you're viewing... I think it was also part of the COPPA act, so it is required by law, but I'm not sure.

I went invisible simply because I prefer to lurk most of the time, jumping on and off randomly. What actions make you "off"? Can you tell if I just close my browser?

It should show you online or as browsing a particular forum for a set period of time, this period updates everytime a new page is loaded.

So it actually depends on how much activity there's at the forum?

I like the feature of how many users are currently browsing the particular forum your in. Like right now, Site Feedback currently has 5 members viewing and one guest. But only 3 members are listed, so obviously you know that there are two invisible members.
