The year is 1831. New nations are rising out of the turmoils of revolution and war. New ideologies emerge to challenge the old order. New industries and scientific discoveries are lighting the way to a brave new future. Will the great empires of the Industrial Age lead the world to the bright dawn of prosperity, or the dark nights of war?

"Civilization never recedes; the law of necessity ever forces it onwards."

Iron and Blood is an empire-building slash role-playing game in the infamous Imperium Offtopicum (IOT) tradition. You create and take control of a nation, claim land, build armies, negotiate treaties, and attack each other.

It’s turn-based. One turn ends and a new turn begin with an update. The game will start in 1831 and each turn will represent 4 years, so the first turn will cover 1831 to the end of 1835.

    Swaziland
    Kingdom of Swaziland
    Player: BSmith1068

    Nation Info

Swaziland, with its capital in Southern Africa, grew from a humble chiefdom at the start of the 19th century to become the world's largest nation by the century's end. An influential member of the Accord, Swazi military might is legendary, though in its early days the Swazi state expanded by diplomacy rather than by force of arms. The conquest of British North America and later the subjugation of Tawantinsuyo made the Swazi King the most powerful ruler on Earth.

    Ethiopia
    The Kingdom Of Greater Ethiopia
    Player: hoplitejoe

    Nation Info

In 1904, as the Saoirsan Empire crumbled, an Ethiopian noble declared himself Emperor Menelik II. He eventually came to control not only the Horn of Africa and the Swahili coast but also the Saoirsan heartland in the Congo. Menelik declared his new kingdom neutral in all world affairs, presumably to concentrate on consolidating his rule over such a large stretch of land.

    Tawantinsuyo

(Successor state of: the Empire of Tawantinsuyo, 1827 - 1888)
    (Vassal state of: Swaziland)
    Player: Red_Spy

    Nation Info (Empire of Tawantinsuyo)
    Nation info (New Tawantinsuyo Republic)

Tawantinsuyo became independent in 1827, when the indigenous people of Peru threw off Spanish colonial rule and establish a state inspired by the former Incan Empire. The Incans expanded to include Brazil and La Plata. In 1884, a slave revolt escalated to become a nationwide revolution. The revolutionaries established the communist New Tawantinsuyo Republic. Four years later it became embroiled in a war against Swaziland and the Three Kingdoms; it lost Brazil, Paraguay and La Plata to Swaziland, and Tawantinsuyo itself became a vassal of Swaziland as per the Treaty of Cuzco (1897) and was forced to purge the communists in its government.

    Gran Colombia
    People's Republic of Gran Colombia
(Successor state of: Gran Colombia, 1839 - 1888)
    Player: momo1000

    Nation Info (Gran Colombia)
    Nation info (PRGC)

The Colombian republic was created after a victory against Spanish rulers by Simon Bolivar. It encompassed the land of the Spanish colony of New Grenada. It industrialised gradually throughout the 1840s and 1850s. The Colombians were known worldwide for creating the international humanitarian organisation Estrella Roja in 1861. Starting in 1858 the Colombians began to expand into Guyana, and the entire territory was incorporated by 1866. In 1888, inspired by events in neighbouring Tawantinsuyo, a revolution overthrew the ruling elite and the country became a communist state. Gran Colombia's membership in the UNA may have so far deterred Accordian military action against the communist regime, as happened in Tawantinsuyo, China and Russia.

    Spoiler :

    Hawaii
    Kingdom of Hawaii
    1831 - 1894
    Player: Lighthearter, CELTICEMPIRE, arya126

    Nation Info

United in 1831, the Kingdom of Hawaii was an aggressive, authoritarian slave-trading state. In 1840, an international crisis was sparked by the King's sudden abdication, as Britain, California, the CSA and other powers make their bids for the territory. In 1842, Toyotami Yokusankai and his followers staged a coup; slavery was abolished and Islam was adopted as the state religion. The new regime was able to retain Hawaii's independence, and joined the UNA.

In 1873, the Canadian War of Independence broke out between the UNA and the Accord. Hawaii refused to support other UNA countries in the war and left the organisation. In retaliation, California, Librulstan and Tawantinsuyo went to war against Hawaii and its ally, Alaska. Hawaii hired British advisors and sold its Micronesian holdings to Australia to raise funds for the defence of the home islands. The Pacific War, as it became known, would stretch on for more than a decade. The Hawaiians fought valiantly against incredible odds, but eventually superior Californian firepower prevailed. Honolulu fell in 1889, and the last King of Hawaii surrendered in 1894.

In 1898, the Hawaiian Insurgency erupted over the brutality of the Californian occupation forces and the exploitation of Hawaiian people and resources. In 1900 the Californian government signed a treaty with the main resistance group, the Hawaiian Resistance Front, ending hostilities and making Hawaii an autonomous region within California.

    Horn of Africa
    1831 - 1882
    Player: civplayah, Domination3000

The Horn of Africa was a state based in Ethiopia. At one point, it controlled a swath of territory from Somalia on the Indian Ocean to Nigeria on the Gulf of Guinea. It was a liberal democracy and comprised of many different ethnicities. By 1874, however, the country was wrecked by instability. That year, the central government collapsed. Its successor states did not last long, and were soon swallowed up by their neighbors.

    Canada
    (Old Canada)
    1821 - 1838
    Player: ilduce349

    Nation Info

Old Canada (as it is known by historians, to distinguish it from the modern state of Canada) rose out of the ashes of the United States of America. Located in what is now Ontario province of modern Canada, with its capital in Ottowa, it was briefly one of the most powerful states in North America. In 1838, however, the central government collapsed. Ontario was invaded by Quebec in 1840-1841, but the invasion was repulsed, at great cost. Ontario remained divided until it was briefly annexed by Great Britain in 1869. After a short war, modern independent Canada uniting Quebec, Ontario and the Prairies was established in 1877.

    Québec
    The Autonomous Protectorate of
    The Most Glorious Socialist Duchy
    and Constituencies of Québec
    1821 - 1869
    Player: Robert Can't

    Nation Info

French-speaking Quebec seceded from the United States in 1821. It became one of the world's leading nations, especially in science and technology; Quebecois scientists made great discoveries in the 1830s. However, a failed invasion of Ontario and ineffectual leadership in the 1840s and 1850s sapped the nation of its strength. In the 1860s, a political movement rose in Quebec which called for union with France. In 1869, France formally annexed Quebec while its then-ally Britain annexed Ontario. This sparked a short war with the UNA, which culminated in the formation of modern Canada, of which Quebec is a part, in 1877.

    Japan
    Empire of Japan
    1600 - 1870
    Player: Domination3000

    Nation Info

The history of modern Japan began in 1600, with the unification of the country under the Tokugawa shoguns. In the 1630s, the shoguns instituted the policy of Sakoku, or isolationism. By the 1830s, as the world was transformed by the industrial revolution, this policy was revised. The government was reformed and Japan embraced industrialisation, experiencing an economic boom in the late 1830s and 1840s. The new Japan also began to seek colonies overseas. The mainland Asian powers banded together to form the Alliance of the Three Kingdoms to counter the Japanese threat. When the Japanese attempted to take over northern China in 1860, war broke out. Japan and the ATK fought on and off for over 10 years; by 1870, the Home Islands had fallen and the Japanese had fled to the island of Taiwan. Later that year, the Japanese Imperial Government on Taiwan surrendered to the Alliance unconditionally.

    The SRO
    Socialist Republic of Odin
    1805 - 1848
    Player: Zack

    Nation Info

The SRO was the successor to the Kingdom of Odin, which had unified Scandinavia under a theocratic regime but was overthrown by revolutionaries in 1805. The SRO can be said to be the world's first socialist country. Its leaders were early pioneers implementing a welfare state. For a while, it was a member of the Baltic Alliance with Russia and Germany.

The SRO split into its constituent countries by 1848. One by one, they joined or were forced to join the German Empire.

    The Mughal Empire
    1526 - 1890
    Player: Farsight

    Nation Info

The Mughal Empire was established in 1526 by Babur, and gradually expanded its control over most of India. However, by the 1800s the Empire was a shadow of its former self. Under a new Emperor, the Mughals slowly reconquered the subcontinent. It came into conflict against the Alliance of the Three Kingdoms. The Great Indian War (1875 - 1890) ended with the partition and colonisation of India by the Alliance.

    Aanastin
    1822 - 1838
    Player: Abaddon

    Nation Info

Brazil declared its independence from Portugal in 1822. Under a charismatic leader, it renamed itself Aanastin and became a totalitarian slave-state. In its ambitions to rule South America, it came into conflict with Tawantinsuyo. The Great Slave Revolt of 1836 - 1838 brought down the regime. An opportunistic Tawantinsuyo soon swooped in to claim Brazil for itself.

    Afghanistan
    Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
    1779 - 1861
    Player: Sonereal

    Nation info

Afghanistan was united in 1779 in the face of a foreign invasion. After the war, the different tribal communities signed a treaty that established the multiethnic Afghan state. Over the years, Afghanistan expanded west into Iran and south into the Indus Valley. However, by the 1850s cracks started to show in the fragile state, as ambitious rival leaders fight for control. The Islamic Republic collapsed in 1861, and its territories fell prey to stronger neighbours.

    Saoirse
    1804 - 1904
    Player: Aiolos

    Nation info

Saoirse, with its capital on the river Congo, was originally founded by Irish refugees fleeing British persecution back home. There they joined the local chiefdoms in battling European and Arab slavers. The society that eventually emerged from such cooperation was a model of an egalitarian, liberal community. In time, the Saoirsans dreamed of spreading their vision beyond their borders. Today, opinions of Saoirsan imperialism are mixed. Many point out that the Saoirsans ended ancient evils like slavery and racial discrimination. Others argue that many rights were denied to Saoirsan colonial subjects and they did not benefit from Saoirse's economic prosperity as much as the Congolese.

The Saoirsan Empire began to crumble at the turn of the century. The eastern half became part of a resurgent Ethiopia. The western half was carved up by various states.

    Alaska
    Kingdom of Alaska
    1796 - 1885
    Player: bestrfcplayer

    Nation Info

Founded in 1780 by Russian colonists, and declared independence in 1796, Alaska was a quiet kingdom in the far northwest corner of the American continent. Most of the population concentrates along the hospitable (compared to the rest of the country) southern coast. In its early days its economy heavily relied on the fishing market and fur trade. However, the country gradually industrialised, and became wealthy despite its low population, inhospitable climate and geographical isolation. Its end came during the Pacific War (1879 - 1894) when it decided to support its ally Hawaii against a UNA coalition. It was invaded by a Librulstani-led force and was annexed by Librulstan at the end of 1885.

    Great Britain
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
    1707 - 1880
    Player: arya126

    Nation Info

Great Britain lost its empire at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. It experienced a revival beginning in the late 1820s, and by the end of the 1830s it was once again a respectable world power. After initial setbacks, it wrestled control of North Africa from Spain in 1844, and together with its historic enemy France forced the Spanish into a distant exile in the Far East. It became one of France's closest ally and was a founding member of the L'accord de la Grande. However, after Britain made a separate peace with the UNA during the Canadian Crisis, its former allies led by France declared war on Britain in 1878. Britain's industrial underdevelopment costed her her independence; the Accordian coalition, superior in numbers, organisation and firepower, invaded all her overseas colonies simultaneously, and converged on the British Isles from all directions. The war was all over in two years, though the Royal Navy managed to flee to Hawaii with part of the country's treasury. After a short period of military administration, France formally annexed the British Isles in 1886. When the European Republic was formed in 1887, England, Scotland and Ireland were made into autonomous republics.

    Rome
    New Roman Empire
    1820s - 1840
    Player: Omega124

    Nation Info

The New Roman Empire, as the united Italian state called itself, was formed in the 1820s by disgruntled liberals and nationalists, inspired by the Napoleonic example in France, who overthrew the Italian monarchies. Its imperialist ambitions was not well-received by its neighbours, and when the Romans tried to take over Turkey, Bosnia and France declared war. Rome fell to French forces in 1840, and Italy has been part of the French Empire ever since.

    Iceland
    1831 - 1839
    Player: kiwitt

A short-lived state based in Iceland (though it also controlled Greenland) during the 1830s. It was known for its obsession with blondness.

    The World of 1831

    Spoiler :
The French Revolution began in 1789. It sent shockwaves throughout Europe. To contain the radical republican threat, the conservative monarchies of Europe invaded France, unknowingly beginning a quarter of a century of war that would change the world forever.

Napoleon Bonaparte seized control of France in 1799, and under his direction a rejuvenated France went on the offensive, eventually dominating most of Europe. But Napoleon could not conquer all. A series of military defeats forced him into exile. But Napoleon wasn’t finished. In the end, he returned to lead France, and the Coalition grudgingly accepted the existence of the Second French Republic at the Congress of Ulm. In 1831 relations between France and the royal houses of Europe remained uneasy, to say the least, and the young Napoleon II seems to be no less ambitious than his father.

The easternmost region of Europe is the Russian Empire, ruled by the benevolent iron fist of The Kan. Although rebellions in the 18th century resulted in large swaths of loosely-governed territories, from the Islamic states of Idel-Ural to the far-flung colony of Alaska, being lost to the Empire, the Kan is still firmly in control of the Russian heartland, and may now be in a position to take back the lands which were lost last century. Rather backward by European standards, Russia is nevertheless one of the most powerful European state, if only because of the sheer size of its land and population.

Germany was formed partly in response to the threat posed by Napoleonic France. Under the leadership of Prussia, a coalition of states voted to form the German Empire in 1810, and most of the remaining German states were absorbed under the terms of the Treaty of Ulm. The Kaiser, Friedrich Wilhelm III, has high hopes for the new Empire, and the scope of his ambition is already causing concern throughout the continent.

Italy was also united, under the name of the New Roman Empire. The Italians look back to the days of the old Roman Empire, readopting almost every aspect of old Roman government and society down to language and (reportedly) togas and tunics. It is a republic, and therefore one of France’s few potential friends had the Roman leadership not been so resolutely expansionist.

Europe’s third republic is Scandinavia, under the name of the Socialist Republic of Odin. Inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment, the French Revolution and the radical socialists, revolutionaries overthrow the Kingdom of Odin in 1805, and since then the country has been endeavoring to build a welfare state, though political dissent is repressed in the name of “socialist transition”. Iceland, meanwhile, is following its own path of development, known for its obsession with “blondness”. It would be a sort of harmless exotic oddity, if not for a fact that it is a disturbing powerful country for its size.

Great Britain has in recent times suffered humiliation after humiliation; the loss of its Indian holdings to an Indian coalition, the loss of its North American and Australian colonies, and finally the survival of Napoleon Bonaparte and the French republican regime. Civil unrest in the British Isles itself has slowed industrial development. But it has survived. It is now at peace, and is still a world power, albeit a weakened one. Britannia may yet rule the waves.

Spain, the scene of so many bloody battles during the Napoleonic Wars, is a shadow of its former self. The Treaty of Ulm left it under an unpopular republican government, widely regarded as a French puppet. The resentment boils over in the Revolution of 1826 that overthrew the Republic and installed an ultranationalist government led by Alejandro Garcia, who imposed an imperialist, theocratic despotism on his people and promised a new golden age for Spain as a world power.

Meanwhile the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in South America had taken advantages of the chaos in Europe to declare their independence. Mexico declared its independence in 1810, but soon descended into civil war. The northern parts of the country seceded from Mexico in quick succession to from Texas, California and (after uniting with British and American colonists in Oregon) Librulstan. The three states followed very different trajectories of development; Texas emerging as a repressive dictatorship, while Librulstan became one of the most liberal states in the world.

The Republic of Spain, unwilling to accept the fact that it has lost most of the countryside to rebels, attempted to hold on to its remaining American possessions. In 1827, as mainland Spain underwent a bloody revolution, the rebels seized the opportunity and overran the rest of Spanish America. In Peru, the insurrection was led by a Quechua leader, Atahualpa, who resurrected Tawantinsuyo, the realms of the Inca, and promoted native culture and customs. The new state faced a serious threat from Aanastin, where a charismatic aristocrat declared Brazil’s independence from Portugal and established a totalitarian, expansionist slave state, and has declared the Incan state's existence unacceptable.

The American Revolution has established the United States of America in place of Britain’s North American colonies. The new Union, however, was fragile. Canada and Quebec, invaded and severely treated during the Revolutionary War, was an unwilling participant, and there was a growing rift between the northern and southern states. The hope that a victory over the British in the War of 1812 would strengthen the Union was short-lived, and Canada, Quebec and the alliance of southern states, calling itself the Confederate States of America, seceded from the United States in 1821. A Civil War lasted until 1825, when the United States was dissolved, leaving Canada and the CSA to compete over its remains.

In China, the White Lotus Rebellion broke out in 1796. Infamously, the corrupt official Heshen initially dismissed the uprising as “harmless talk”, but soon the Qing Dynasty was seriously under threat. The attempt by the Jiaqing Emperor to purge his court and crush the rebellion failed, and encouraged more uprisings in southern China. By 1821 the Qing has fallen and China has entered another period of disunity. Among the breakaway states, the Southern Han Empire based in Guangzhou is the richest and most powerful, its ruler having created a strong centralized and nationalist state. In the west, the Kingdom of Xi’an is one of the few areas of China which has never been completely subdued by either the Ming or the Qing, and in the power vacuum created by the fall of the Qing has began to expand into the rest of China, while Shaanxi’s coal mines are fueling industrial growth.

To the east, Japan is finally beginning to emerge from its self-imposed seclusion. A new Shogun has ordered a restructuring of the government, and has his sights set on territories on mainland Asia. Further south, Siam has established itself as the most powerful among the various petty Southeast Asian kingdoms. It seems only a matter of time before the rest of the region falls to the Siamese, though the arrival of European colonialists could change this picture.

In Africa, two states have embarked on a remarkable experiment with liberalism. The Horn of Africa is united under a single state for the first time, and its leaders embraced liberal ideals. In the Congo, refugees from persecution from all over the world banded with embattled locals to fight off pirates and slavers, and in 1812 established the nation of Saoirse, founded on the ideals of liberty, equality and justice for all. Africa’s third great state, Swaziland, is a more traditional monarchy. Its expansionist king has secured the recognition of all the tribes of southern Africa, and now looks to expand his kingdom’s borders further to the north.

The Islamic world has seen its fair share of upheavals, not least the sudden fall of the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Mahmud’s attempts to reform the decaying Ottoman state and its military had failed terribly. But it was botched purge of the Janissaries in 1826, and its bloody aftermath, which was the final nail in the coffin. Nationalism swept though the Empire, and its provinces declared independence one by one. In Bosnia, Husein Gradascevic led the uprising against Ottoman rule, established the Bosnian Sultanate, and eventually managed to extend Bosnian rule throughout the Balkans.

Arabia was another region which asserted its independence as the Ottoman Empire collapsed. For a while it seems either the Sharif of Mecca or the House of Saud in Nejd would unify the peninsula, but Yasir al-Fulani defeated both and established the Caliphate of Medina. Looking back to the early days of Islam for inspiration, he sought to unite all the Muslim lands under one banner. Afghanistan was also recently unified, an extraordinary triumph of tribal diplomacy. The Afghans too look to expand, especially into the rich lands of India, where formerly allied states, which together brought about a humiliating British retreat from India, have turned on each other, embroiling the entire subcontinent in frenzied chaotic warfare. Many Indians have escaped the ravages of war to find refuge in Australia, which has declared its independence from the Dutch and British in 1799 as a democratic state, and is now experience an economic and population boom thanks to a gold rush. The other Pacific power, Hawaii, is a less popular immigration destination; infact it is a totalitarian ultranationalistic nation that thrives on slave trading, and is seeking to expand its borders and dominate the Pacific Ocean.

A few things before I go to sleep:

    - There is no "Claims Thread", so if you want to post your claim/spending publicly post it here in this thread, but make it BOLD and in RED (like what you're reading now) so it stands out to me. (Also, when you get events, respond to them like this as well). You can also PM your orders to me if you want to keep things secret (like espionage, or war plans...)

    - This thread is meant for claims, announcements, roleplay and stories. Please, please, please use the discussion group for informal diplomacy or chatting so as not to clutter this thread. Remember, Spam kills IOTs.

    - If you can repost your nation info from the sign-up thread here that'd be great, and I'll add links to them in Post #4 (where it says "Nation info" for each nation). It'd be even better if you can update your nation info post occasionally as the game progresses.

If you have any questions just ask. :)

    Major rule changes:
    1. you no longer have to pay for the support and build cost of a unit in the same turn.
    2. Factories now cost 2 ICs each.

No, sorry, factory investment is not cumulative. It's a bit too much for me to keep track.

Also, if you check the stats, you'll see you only have four IC. At "Guarded" stability you can only use 80% of your IC.

Almost forgot, please state your country when posting claims. It makes my life easier, I can tell you.

This is why I should had finished my history.

Latin is NOT being revived, as it's too much work. We just used Latin postition names for sentimental value, nothing more. There really is no offical launguage, just like America, but everyone (so far, before our conquests...) uses Italian, so that is what the government uses. It wasn't also united due to Napoleon's threat, but by Napoleon's legacy. The disgrunted liberals and the nationalists banded together and attacked the kingdoms (in the 1820s) after the fall of the Kingdom of Italy.

    Also, no togas.
