Wartime Australia was not so much different from peacetime Australia. Fewer people walked the streets, the mood was not as happy, politicians were actually cooperating for once, and most of the talk was about the war, but for most people life continued much as it had universe.
the 1907 elections were the first where the nation was involved in a world war. JR Fitzpatrick, who had already served two terms, could not run for a third term due to the two-term limit. Vice President Singh decided not to run, instead accepting a position as chairman of the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA), formed in the last days of the Fitzpatrick administration. Chief Admiral of the Navy George Panay decided to run at the forefront of a coalition of politicians that the press affectionately dubbed "the War Council" Panay, a Tuvalu native, started a practice of dismissing incompetent or unable officials from their posts. Among those dismissed were those responsible for the failed France landings.
The Australian Navy, along with its allies, had won many great victories at sea. The Austalian Navy was one of the world's elite. Australia began the construction of four "super battleships", to be the biggest fighting ships on Earth. They were so big, in fact, that many insiders began calling them The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. President Panay's new Chief Admiral, Charlie Burton went along with the name, having the ships named the ANV Conquest, the ANV Pestilence, the ANV Famine, and the ANV Death.
