Iron and Blood - Game Thread

Robin Longstride strode down the isle of the barracks in London. He was thankful to be back in Britain. Russia may be a good country, but he just couldnt understand the bloody language.

"GENERAL LONGSTRIDE!" Shouted a messenger as he crashed into the barracks through the flaps of rubber hanging from the ceiling they called a door. The messenger ran straight towards him, carrying a scroll of paper.

"Where are we shipped out to next?" Robin knew that this particular man was the favored man for carrying orders to ship out on a foreign expedition.

"Take a guess. What country is inhabited by short japs who like to boss europeans around by the point of a bayonet?" The messenger said.

"China," answered robin with a sly smile. They went through this routine every time.

"Wrong, its Japan you idiot. Where else are there 4 foot tall japs who think they are better than us? Even Quebec could beat them!"

Robin laughed, bade the man a good day, then turned to the rest of the barracks.

"Well you heard the man! Grab your rifles, fix your bayonets, and lets go bail the government out again!"

The Shah has consilidated his domain to the point that large scale industrialisation of the country can take place. All over the subcontinent, new factories are opening up, work is being created, and the economy is stimulated. Many economists are hoping that one day India will be one of the biggest economic power in Asia, or even the world.

A typical Indigo dye factory in Bengal. Although indigo is plentiful in the region, only now is the large-scale production of dyes taking place in their native area, as opposed to being exported to be produced.

In addition, many Mughal generals are concerned about the national defence of the Empire. Although India has expanded peacefully up to this point, there is always the possibility of foreign invasion of India- the Quebecois aquisition of Ceylon is thought by many to perhaps be a foreshadowing of what might come. Nationwide, soldiers are being enlisted as to defend the motherland in a future war.

We have a new prime Minister! well not really, but Vincent De Nil has been elected to his 4th term as our glorious head of state! The Duke of Wellington, upon his return from Xi'an was appointed to lead our great military. Laurence van Geyte, who successfully coordinated the Anglo-Spanish war for the past few decades, has returned home to take command of the planned Home Defence force so he can spend more time with his family. Vincent De Nil has appointed General Robin Longstride to command all british forces in the far east pending aquisition of territory in the area, and Isaac Brock has been appointed to over see the military affairs in africa and the Med.

But prime minister elections and appointments arent all we have! Oh no. Parliament has radically shifted! Socialists have lost all their seats, but Communism showed a strong appearance in Scotland due to widespread poverty showing up there. I urge our government to take actions to combat this red menace. They now have 15% of all seats! Conservatives have, as always, put in a strong appearance, adding another 5 to their previously held 40 seats. Nationalists arent that far behind, neck and neck with the Liberals, both of them around 20, with the libs at 19, and the Nats at 21. Ultranationalists have basicly disappeared in recent years, although they managed to come back and win 2 isolated seats this time.

In Portugal, a local legislature has been set up, although elections are still pending. It seems to be leaning towards ultranationalistic tendencies, although Liberal candidates are their strongest competitor.

Greenland is in much the same situation as Portugal, although this is more due to Iceland not being under British control yet. Once they have been incorporated into the nation, elections shall commence, and the early prediction is that Socialism shall reign supreme here, although some more moderate Liberals are being funded through Britain already. Conservatism has all but been given up on in that area.

Now we come to Mahgreb. This is an interesting case, as a new party has sprung up here that doesnt fit under any one ideology, but nonetheless has won the majority of seats there, with a whopping 64 out of 82! This new party is focused on the corsairs, and seems to have many local gangsters running. However, it is obvious that the people follow them through loyalty rather than fear, and these gangsters and corsairs seem to be determined to give their state the best possible future under the british flag!

The Caliph was extremely pleased. He had expanded the borders of the empire to the cities of mesopotamia. The Caliphate of Medina now streched from the edges of the sands of Libya to just beyond the rivers that had birthed civilization. The Caliph proclaimed that an expansion of industry was to begin in the newly aquired Emirate of Iraq. However, the Caliph was aware his military was minuscule, ill-equipped, and overextended. To defend his newly acquired territories, he decided to double the size of his standing army, by recruiting a new brigade to the Fulani Mujahideen. The Caliph was also aware that although his power was under no direct threat, there was several small anti-Caliphate groups, and a small degree of corruption in his government. He spent quite a bit of money there too, trying to stamp out corruption and other destabilizing elements in his government. Satisfied, he also decided to slightly expand the power of the lower chamber of his legislature. With such a large empire, he expanded the franchise by decreeing that all male Muslims had the right to vote, whereas previously only landowning male Muslims could. The time for expansion was over. Now came the time for consolidation.

GM: Expansion clarification

If two people are attempting to bribe the same province at the same time, I roll alternatively, with the first person to lay the claim or bribe rolling first.

So the sooner I receive your orders the more chance you have of success.

Librulstan finds the British claim to Tartary to be even more ridiculous than the Japanese claim. At least Japan is somewhat close to Russia.

As per the new technology rules, my orders are now changed (original orders here):

Pacific Republic of Librulstan

2 IC into Rifle Infantry
2 IC into one Army
2 IC into a Factory in Yukon
6 IC into 3 Factories in Colorado

I also nomimate Colorado for core status again, since it has 5 factories with these new additions- how do I do that, exactly? Do I just say "make Colorado a core" or something?

Important announcement!

Ambassadors from Japan and England have agreed upon a deal. Japan will pay 6 ICs to England, and in return, the British will stay entirely out of the Far-East. The kinks are still being worked out, but both sides are optimistic that a deal will be reached. More info on the actual proceedings can be found in the Nation's Historical Archives (OOC: My VM wall) but most likely, a deal will be reached. Once the deal is finalized, I will edit this post.

EDIT: Final Kinks have been ironed out. Here is the deal: http://forums.civfanatics.com/converse.php?u=182496&u2=181060

And with that in mind, I'll be editing my orders...

The Journey of Carlos Sanchez

Carlos Sanchez, a captain from Texas, was sent on a mission to bribe the natives in Chile to join the empire. While he failed, it was mostly because of low funding for such a perilous journey around South America. Nonetheless he became a national hero for the citizens who dreamed of sailing to worlds unknown, like what exists below Tierra Del Fuego.

His Journey

Sanchez and his crew sailed around South America, a very long and dangerous journey. He started his voyage at Guantanamo, which at the time was foreign territory. He sailed south to Gran Colombia, where he met with Simon Bolivar and other major political bodies. After buying supplies, he sailed down the eastern coast until reaching Brazil, held by Tawantinsuyo. There he also bought items and talked with the people there, including Juan Capac. The voyage was going well, until they reached Rio De Janeiro. This city was the last stop before going to an uncivilized world, one full of tribal civilizations, some potentially dangerous.

Now they were sailing off the coast of La Plata, a territory with some large cities, but mostly unpopulated. The crew could not get any supplies now, if they ran out, they were doomed. But the wind was favorable, and they kept on chugging.

But every journey has it's downs. At the Strait of Magellan, there were several storms and unfavorable winds, slowing Sanchez down. One day, The Angel was hit by lightning in a storm, and set part of the ship on fire. Some supplies were lost and one sailor was killed. They repaired the damage and began the journey again.

After leaving the strait, things began picking up again. Now they had reached Chile, a strip of land, much like La Plata, but was much more mountainous, and therefore less populated. After several months, they reached the coast leading to Santiago. They anchored their ships, and carried their supplies to the city.

Santiago

Santiago was a nice city on the mountains, and the largest city in Chile. They stayed there for about a month, In which they tried to get the Chilean leader to accept annexation. But no matter how much money was thrown at him, he denied. The disappointed crew went back to their ships, and devised a different plan to get back home. Instead of sailing all the way around South America again, they would sail north to California - controlled Central America. Then they would take a train to Limon, where a ship was docked. They would use the ships to return home. One problem: it was not headed for Guantanamo, but for Kingston, Texan Jamaica. They agreed to that, and started sailing.

The Journey Resumes

They found the shores of Peru, and met with Tawantinsuyo again, restocking supplies and seeing their capital. It was smooth sailing until they reached Panama City, the first time that they saw the nation of California. They built a crate full of supplies for the crew, and took a train to Limon. They were now facing the Caribbean Sea, where they first started the voyage. They took the massive boat, and sailed to Kingston.

Home Again

At last, after nearly a year of travel, they were back. People screamed and cheered as Sanchez and his crew stepped onto Texan land once more. While he didn't succeed in taking Chile, the king still gave him extra funding for another voyage. His discoveries inspired many to buy a ship and sail the high seas to see new things. His name was said almost everywhere in the empire at his return. Some passenger shipping companies even had advertisements with him on them! Carlos Sanchez changed the Texan way of sea traveling.

For the first time ever, true elections were to occur in Colombia. Election Day, March 10th, was now the date on everyone's minds. The voting areas were flooded days prior to the election because people were worried that the window of opportunity to have their voices heard would be a small one. President Bolivar himself arrived at several of the voting areas to explain that elections were to be held every five years, no matter what. "If a leader tries to wrestle control from the people in the future," Simon said, "Once again the glorious and strong people of Gran Colombia would rise up in revolution to ensure their liberties. This is a promise." This was spoken more to potential dictators more than to the voters, and the next day, several of the candidates for the Presidency quietly slipped away into the countryside.

The Results of the Elections of 1855:

The most popular candidates by far were Domingo Caycedo, a former soldier who had served with Bolivar, and Joaquín Mosquera, the ambassador to Tawantinsuyo. Mosquera was most popular in the state of Ecuador, which bordered Tawantinsuyo and profited greatly from trade with the Incan state. Caycedo was far more popular in the East, winning support from Colombians and Venezuelans, who saw Caycedo as a man similar to their beloved Simon Bolivar.
