Man this sucks...
In my current Regent Game on Huge Map I just discovered Steam Power. After searching the whole map for the available coal resources, most of them happened to be in my territory (like four or five of them). Also, out of the entire huge map there were two potential locations for Iron works (Coal and Iron close enough to fit within one city's radius), and they were both in my territory also!
What sucks is that the coal in both situations appeared just one square on the outside of two of my Iron producing towns! It was not within the city radius. And, I don't think it would be worth founding a new town so close to those cities (and other surrounding cities) just to get Iron Works because then the land would be shared too much between cities.

Oh well, at least I know the enemy can't get Iron Works either.

Just a little FYI, and not to be a smart ass. There is an edit button so you don't have to let anyone else see your mistakes. It is to the left of the quote button at the top right of your post. Learn to love it. :D

Getting a good city to build the Ironworks is a matter of luck. I'd say I get to build it in about half my games (I play normal maps, continents). My last game, however, was insane. I had no less than three different cities that could've built it. Luckily, one such city was right next to my forbidden palace, so it wasn't corrupt at all. I love it when I get a break like that.

Oh yeah, that reminds me I forgot to mention that of those two cities that I'm talking about, one IS my capitol, and one is the closest city right next to my city with the Forbidden Palace.

Talk about close, but no Cigar!

Of the many games I had played up until this point, I had never had an opportunity to build it anywhere in my territory. This last game however, I caught a lucky break. One of my sources of iron was located within the borders of the city right next to my capital, and it had no corruption. When I got Steam Power, I was disappointed to find that there was no coal anywhere near my main cities, only by one of my fringe cities. Then, about 10 turns later, I got a pop up box saying that my people wanted to build Iron Works, and I wondered what was going on. Then I saw that a source of coal had appeared within the city where I had the iron right by my capital. Talk about a lucky break.:D

Wohow! In my last game (huge, 16 civ) I conquered and conquered and conquered....
I found I could build the IW in 3 (!) different existing towns and found 2 more new towns that would be able to build them.

The problem: they all were on the fringes of my territory, corrupted and wasted to hell. :(

:aargh: AAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!! I went, then decided to move my Palace (though I really had it in the ideal place!)...

the next turn, and behold: "we found a new source of coal!" - next to my cpaital, which already had iron!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HA!
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

well BridgeBoy... if you felt like you REALLY NEEDED IT, you could disband citys (just make a ton of settlers till it dies). It depends on wht situation ur in.

lol you are one lucky ........... i have played many games and im never able to make the iron works because they (the iron and coal resources) apear to separated.
Right now im playing a game with china and i had to cheat to get the iron works, yeah i went to the editor and put that my capital have iron and coal so i could build the iron works jaja :) i think thats the only way i can have the iron works.

it helps to play with 5 billion age - fewer mountains so fewer spread out res.

also, I usually try to get terrain with jungle, then buil towns 1 square into the jungle. Thus they include a lot of potential caol tiles but still include hills that are next to the jungle. sometimes I even set towns intentionally so that they have iron + max possible jungle - then I pray

If I ever have iron near a jungle or other coal-supporting terrain, I try to build three cities that can access that iron tile, and hope. The only time I built Iron Works, however, it was far from capital/FP so I just ended up with a very corrupt town that polluted the area like a randy skunk. I think when the game ended i was getting a whopping 12 shields/turn in that city.

So far in about a dozen games, I've never had a chance for an iron works. Using a 5 billion land, I have had coal and iron close enough, but coz my cities were already using the land, I didn't want to destroy them and build a new city in the middle. One of this days though.:D

Well, I decided my cities were doing too good to disband them, so I decided I just wouldn't have Iron Works this game. I'm glad I made this decision because later in the game, I'd say less than 70-turns or so later, both coal resources next to both towns mentioned above got used up! Lucky I didn't invest in rearranging the locations of the towns to build Iron Works and then just have the resource vanish!:crazyeye:

bridgeboy - as long as the ironworks is started w/ both resources present( and they have to be) even if 1 or both disappear you still get the benefit .... they just must be there to start improvements..... its that way with all units w/ required resources.

that`s why you have to start IW construction ASAP. Then, if the res goes, you can still complete it and enjoy the benefits

Thanks for that info...I'll remember that. However, in my case, if you read earlier posts in this thread, I would have had to move either of the towns and then start building Iron Works...still wouldn't have been worth it I don't think.

I understand with the Iron Works example, but do you also mean this: (which is going on in my game now)

America does not have coal resource. They are the only ones with no railroads. I start trading them coal. If I stop trade with them later, they can continue building railroads? Or, say they originally had coal, then it disappeared? Same with Iron, if your only resource of Iron ever disappears your saying it doesn't matter...once you have it once, all benifits from it last forever whether it disappears or not? (Building swordsman, etc.)

A little off-topic, but, why when I use the QUOTE tag it just puts: "quote" and then my cut and pasted information,

and when others do it, it puts: "quote" and "Originally posted by so-and-so"?

How do you get the "Originally posted by whoever" part in there?
