Ironworks?

I apologize if this has been covered; I have searched, but could not find discussion of this exact issue.

I was building Ironworks in a city with access to Iron and Coal, and all of a sudden (at the year 2000, after discovering Robotics) I got a message that said "City X can no longer work on Ironworks. Production has been turned into X gold."

I've looked at everything, and can find no information on Ironworks being obsoleted by anything. Does the 1.62 Patch fix this issue? It's not that the Ironworks is not working (which has been covered in these forums), but rather that I can't even build it for some odd reason.

I'm confused. :(

That's definitely strange. I see two possible explanations:
- you built the ironworks in another city, or got (peacefully) control of another city which already contained the ironworks.
- you already had a national wonder in that city and built a second one while the ironworks were in queue.

In any case, a save would be a great help.

A forge burned down in one of your cities? You need a forge in the city building it and at least 5 other cities. (standard map size)

You probably didn't have enough forges

One of the cities with a forge could have been captured in a war if you're in one. Or it could have culture flipped.

Surely if it was something like a loss of the required resources or buildings the production wouldn't be converted into gold. I seem to recall building a cathedral when I lost one of my temples. Once I recaptured it I could just pick up the cathedral where I left off.

The way I see it, JujuLautre's suggestions are the only options. Either that or some kind of as yet undiscovered bug.

BTW, it can't hurt to run the latest patch. Even if it won't fix this problem, it'll fix others.
