Iroquois - a name that shows respect?

Unlikely since the whole point is to add familiarity.

They are called Iroqois in american history so trying to force the educational trivia that most people probably don't know about without doing a thesis on the Iroqois is somewhat pointless.

There are still Iroquios, Aztec, or Incan people around today?

Seems that the Spanish IRL were much worse at war than I am in Civ :p

/JOKES ...... Dont hate me for saying that :(

I live in Onondaga, where the Iroqois are covered quite a bit in our schools because it is local history. I've never heard of the term "Iroqois" being considered offensive in any way.

The only thing that's offensive about them in regards to Civ V is how atrociously people in videos pronounce Onondaga.

Hmm, I didn't know this about the name Iroquois. It's interesting how history has a way of fudging the facts.

Anyone ever see the Robert Wuhl special "Assume the Position" on HBO?

Then I'm happy with Iroquois :)

Aaah, the French and their mutilation of languages :)

So the correct pronunciation, as pronounced in French then, would be 'erokwa'

Yes that's how we say it in french. i = e , oi = wa

About the OP, it's very commun I think.... Like Appache mean ''the ennemy'' if I remember well. And I'm pretty sure some tribe would find pride in that.

You realize you shouldn't take anything on Wikipedia as fact. any old Bill Joe and Harry can go on there and change what it says.

Yeah, but not just anything can stay up there. A lot of it is reviewed and has to be cited to be put into an article. That's the part of that people tend to overlook.

ive seen articles have false information in them for months before a reviewer noticed it.

i still wouldn't take wikipedia as a reliable source regardless.

All depends on what the source was. Wikipedia should not be trusted; but its sources may be far more reliable. And NOTHING is supposed to be on Wikipedia without a source.

Nice of you to step in and edit it so it was accurate. But you're perfectly happy to sit back and criticize.

The Sioux didn't use that term to describe themselves any more than the Vikings.

It often simplifies communication to use the best known name, rather than what people call themselves. Names people call themselves can get tricky too, because sometimes they translate into something like ....the great people/the true people/ the human people, which isn't very definitive, other than to belittle outsiders.

Being feared by your enemies is a kind of respect.

If civ names (and other info) is still in XML, like it was in Civ4, then players will be able to make any changes they may desire. Simple solution: if it offends you, change it.

I doubt very much that Firaxis has set out to offend any particular group of people, so being offended at something in the game is more an issue of dealing with it personally rather than demanding action on Firaxis' part.

Just my two cents.

It's more like they did a half arsed job in researching some of the Civs.

Just because people have the ability to modify things shouldn't justify this.

I'm sure most Koreans would go berserk if Korea ever came out as a Civ and it was portrayed not to their liking. (For example, if they mentioned the Sea of Japan in the background story for Korea.) VANK would be spam E-mailing Firaxis non stop demanding change. ;)
