Just for a bit of fun. We’re a little more than a day away from Civ VII unlocking for early access, and I’m just wondering if anyone else has something they try to do in every game, no matter what, just because. For example, a favorite wonder, even if it’s not a necessity? For me, I love to do what I can to get the artist Hieronymus Bosch. I had a history teacher in high school who loved art, and he would have no problem derailing a class to talk about art. One day he was teaching on some early Renaissance artists, and Bosch was the one that intrigued me. I checked out a few books in the local library and loved his macabre depictions of Hell. So, even if I can’t get him, I will try and trade for his artwork.

Just wonder if anyone else has something similar.

I seem to go out of my way to build Petra. Even better with Nazca. Making a productive city out of a wasteland appeals to me

Yeah we could say this for me too. I so regret that we cannot build Petra in every city with desert, or that the Petra bonuses don't act empire wide. Or that there isn't a building changing desert tiles, and Petra just adds up this building freely with a couple more advantages.

In general I regret there is desert tiles. In my games they are often too close to my capital, and prevent me from settling good cities. I regret the times of Civ2, where everything was grassland/grassland with shield (+1 prod). This was so much simpler.

While I'm at it I regret impassable mountains, tundra and ice too. Everything was so much more satisfying in Civ2.

It's not fair to be surrounded by impassable/unworkable mountains, deserts, tundra, ice, jungle at some point, and on top of that city-States and ocean. Sometimes it's simply a waste of time. Congratulations to those who are not affected by this.

Not even start me on rivers and fresh water to grow your population. Don't people know how to build wells ? It's a shame all cities are considered connected to fresh water only with a random c-S bonus.

Don't get me wrong, I called for all this as a designer, but as a player it's not that much fun according to me.

depictions of Hell
Those are always good stuff. I remember a french movie where some guys and girls try to reach immortality in the Paris catacombs. They end up to Hell and it's pretty scary. Will they escape ? Very huge movie IMHO. [also, Doom the game is badass]

I'm pretty irrational with trying to level up my Recon units in the early game.

I try to only get goodie huts with scouts, save scum if I discover a Natural Wonder with another unit, only do Scout XP actions with the Double XP card in, only start collecting Scout XP from goodies once I've leveled up my Scout to the First Promotion, etc.

The goal is always to get 90 XP to unlock the Ambush +20 CS promotion that makes Recon units actually viable.

But Recon units are still not that effective in the mid & late game, so all the extra effort is not worth it.

I also sometimes Restart if Goodie Huts I'm leaving for later get sniped by other AI.

Yeah, I know they aren’t the best use of resources, especially late game, but I love rangers and spec ops, so I build them anyway. Spec ops would be more fun if they had a movement point they could use to pillage or fortify after using them in an air drop.

I don’t put many districts next to each other even if it will give me better adjacency because I hate how too much sprawl looks like

Have you ever tried the mod that gains full XP from Barbs, as if they were another civ? It makes getting promotions much easier, and is one of my mainstays as far as me viewing Civ 6 as Barb Hunter 6, lol.

Some for me:
*Luxury trading only "on the zero(/ten)". So maybe it's turn 58 and I need some luxuries, I'll wait to do trading on turn 60, just so I can remember and do turn 90/120/150 for rest of game.
*I will park a settler for up to 5 turns if I know Feudalism is nearly done. Is it worth it to put off settling for 3-5 turns just to get two extra build charges? Probably/definitely not with a 1-pop settling... but I still keep doing it. (This is a BAD one)
*I value Imhotep so highly that I'll save and throw all my early faith at the great engineers until I get them... sometimes it is a major (dumb) expense when you are the only CIV buying... and you buy all 4.
*I always theme my Art Museums so they 'look pretty'. I won't have a cream-colour landscape next to a yellow-base landscape. I'll find a Hokusai with blue and stick it in the middle spot to separate the blander ones.
*If I'm playing with Canada, I'm building extra cities just to see if I can get Windsor... and Windsor is definitely getting a hockey arena and an IZ ASAP... because this is how you do it in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Yes! Imhotep is awesome. 3 free wonders (if the first one is the Mausoleum). I definitely try for him too.

Building a nice modern fleet, aka 7th fleet: carrier, subs, battleships/(latter game: missle cruiser). Use ranged units for city bombardment and it's just fun. Don't feel a game is complete without one fleet of 2 carriers, 6 battleships, and 3 subs. There is never anything naval the AI will bring, but it adds a nice dimension to game. Oh, and set sea level to high, to make water units somewhat more interesting. Naturally since don't have a workable world builder. Ice is now passable by naval units so can go around the world and not be trapped in a big lake. Nothing to do with winning the game, it's just about playing with game options.

I have OCD and play mostly RPG Citybuilder simulator. What's out of ordinary is when I make rational choice, lol.

Yeah, I always build a proper modern navy as well. Even though the AI is incapable of countering it. It just doesn’t feel right to not have one!
