Is anyone else annoyed by this?

In civ4 you could access the civilopedia from the main menu. In civ5, you can't. Anyone else bothered by this?

This is by design.

Well, I figured THAT out, but my question (aside from asking others if they feel the same way) is WHY? It's not like it would be hard to program or anything (unless the civilopedia actually was part of a live game, and even then it probably wouldn't take them more that a couple of hours). So why would this resource be denied to players? If anyone has a definitive answer, please tell me!

Why can't I sort units alphabetically? I always forget if catapult is classical or medieval and such...

This is as good a place as any to discuss the other shortcomings of the civilopedia, so the thread's been renamed accordingly. (Oops, it hasn't. How is that done?) One thing that bugs me about the content is that the city-state entries don't tell you if they're Friendly, Irrational, Neutral, or Hostile. (Those are the only possibilities, right?)

I'm pretty sure those are randomly assigned each game. So it would be impossible to list which is which in the civilopaedia.

Minor annoyance but yet, I can see no logical reason for them to take the 'pedia off the main menu. It's annoying to have to load up a game just to view it, like say BEFORE you decide which civ to play as!

The civilopedia could stand to have more hyperlinks. I had built my first airplane, and wasn't sure if there was a limit to the number of aircraft that could be stationed in a city. I looked up one topic (fighter, perhaps, or re-basing), and it told me to look up Aircraft. No hyperlink.

Well, I checked game concepts, and a few other places. I had to go to Combat, Air Combat to get the answer I needed. There was no 'Aircraft' topic.

BTW, there is no limit.

The problem with not having the civilopedia accessible from the main menu is that in order to see details about a civilization -- notably the stats of the unique units and buildings -- you have to actually start a game. In Civ IV I frequently consulted the civilopedia from the main menu to help decide which civilization I wanted to play.

The Civ V UI is slick and pretty, but it's so obtuse that sometimes I wonder if the designer really played Civilization IV more than a few times.

Not being able to access civilopedia from menu is so annoying for the reasons that AriochIV stated in post #15.
