Is bankrupting onself to mainta a standing army routine on Emperor?

You can definitely wonderspam with just 3-4 comp bows as defense, on Emperor.

But at some point, you'll want to take out your immediate neighbor for good.

If you survive the 1st 100 turns, yeah, otherwise you might be in heaps of trouble, especially if you encounter civs like the currently OP'd Huns and if you go with Liberty, then it might be also trickier.
Unless my neighbour is complete bipolar manic-depressive maniac i usually leave them alone. I don't know where you people take the hammers/gold to simultaenously spam wonders and at the same time produce/rush mil units. Not to mention that e.g. in cultural game gold will be in chronic deficit, since you need to buy the cultural buildings asap in cities with low hammer yields or in ones which build wonder after wonder(i.e. capital) and you also need to sign RA's on top of all that.
