Is BtS more taxing on the computer than vanilla, warlords?

I ask this because I had two crazy things happen during playing two games of BtS.

1. It began thundering and lightening after about 15 minutes into the game. Screen was flickering.

2. In another game long poles came out of the heads of my units and moved up and down.

I am puzzled. None of this happened in vanilla.

Well, civ does need a lot of space and you do have vanilla and warlords as well as BTS now so naturally, it needs even more space.
What you described for 2 sounds like an old computer maybe. 1 could have just been a power surge.

When I first got BTS I was pretty sure it make the game run faster.
It's my feeling as well.

Some Advisor screens will take bloody ages to load up (Military...). But the overall experience is smoother.

Classic sign of overheating. You're overclocking your video card too hard, the fan isn't working, or the card itself is going to go soon. If you're overclocking, stop. If you aren't, make sure nothing's obstructing the fan and listen for funny noises coming from it. You may be able to just replace the fan. If the fan seems fine, it's time to get a new card. You may be able to stretch it by using RivaTuner or ATITool to underclock the card 100mhz or so, but failure is inevitable.

I can run them all at highest graphics settings with no trouble...although the IT takes forever in the late game, I think that happens all the time. It happened in Civ 3, too.

I get graphical corruption, I think it has to do with how CIV draws the visible screen - and caches it when not visible. This is easily fixable by going into options and flipping between 0 and 2x AntiAliasing.

Also from what I have seen, CIV doesn't particularly like Nvidia's AA: 2xQ setting - had a lot of issues with that one which for the most part have gone away.

Blue Marble 3.0 is much more taxing than blue marble 1.X was, especially the cloud layer.
I had trouble pinpointing that, as Blue Marble has been a staple of my CIV install since I first discovered it.

screenshots , ....

Bts works fine , but increase the pagefile a bit

Go into your ini file and turn off backgrounds during movies. It will be back to being near instant again.

Sorry for going a bit off topic, but what ini file is it that I can make this change?

Look in My Documents/My Games/Civilization 4, Beyond the Sword or Warlords. Which ever one you happen to be playing. Each one will have it's own ini file.

Back before BTS, I used to be able to use higher resolution graphics and be able to hit the windows key to check my email without crashing. BTS is definitely more intensive for some reason I don't know.

Hi ,

:hmm: thats a first , do you maybe use to many programs and there is no memory ? try to increase your pagefile maybe it will help

Have a nice day :)

BTS is MUCH slower for me. And a lot more waiting between turns (huge Earth map with all civs wasn't bad right through in Warlords, stardard map with 7 civs drags late game in BTS).

i haven't noticed any real difference. 2 gig ram probably helps and 10,000rpm harddrive decreases access time.

Thanks, found it! I was looking in the game core folders, no wonder I could not find it in there. :)

hi ,

folks , increase you page file and close all other programs you dont need , no need to run 25 programs when devoting your time to playing , .... :D

Have a nice day :)

My experience is that BtS in it self is far less taxing on the computer than Warlords in the same conditions . The big issue is that BtS AI makes far more units than the Warlords and Vanilla counterpart and that can make a BtS game go far slower than the same map in Warlords ( especially with big maps with lots of civs ).

About OP: IMHO your graphical card is dieing or you don't have the up to date drivers and directx ( the last is very important ).
