Then it should work! As the conquistadors do not trigger Fez's ability, I thought it could only be done through direct conversion!

Does it count when the city turns to the religion by itself? With mere pressure by proximity to a city?

Play Russia, you'll have much higher faith production so you could use that to keep him from converting your cities to his faith. You'll also get your religion up faster so you could potentially snipe the best religious abilities.

I just remembered that the Mongols have the ability to capture enemy cavalry!
I think they can be the counter to Byzantium (the +3 Cs, and the double CS for visibility is nice too!)

I believe the reason it doesn't work with Conquistadors is because Fez's ability works when converting foreign cities and Conquistadors are technically converting a city that has come under your control.

I am unsure if it works from proximity pressure. Will have to test it.

    Insane,
2 Tagmas can eliminate a Civilzation. And that's only the start. Haven't converted any Holy cities yet.

Yes, byzantium is OP compared to many other civs. That being said, I have personally hated the OP walls of GS, and it was really nice to play a game again where I did not have to spend ages (literally) trying to bring a high combat strength city with walls down, and could actually do some conquering without waiting for flight.

I've played a fair bit with Byzantium these days as I think they're very fun, but don't get me wrong, they're almost broken.

I think the difficulties of playing Byzantium are overstated.
The easiest setup by far is just getting a religion off of 2-3 cities (fortunately the extra GPP makes building shrines/prayers unnecessary, so you get by with just the HS), and after that tech straight to Horsemen.
The beliefs really don't matter as Byzantium, as long as you get Crusade (in my current game I have Work Ethic, despite so-so HS adjaciencies - it really doesnt matter).
The Horsemen fortunately arrive at a point where the AI is stil about equal on military tech, but relies on walls to stay secure.
At that point I prefer to blitz rather than fight for "free" religious pressure, so 1-2 missionaries ahead of the Horsemen (to guarantee an early flip) secures a foothold to work off of.
Fortunately for Byzantium, there's pretty much no city that can withstand 3-4 Horsemen rushing in once the city is flipped, and at that point Byzantium starts snowballing completely out of control.

And I hardly even build Entertainment Complexes (Hippodromes) personally.
Sure you get a free heavy cavalry out of it, but Horsemen are initially a lot stronger than Heavy Chariots and the Tagmas arrive somewhat late comparatively speaking, so Horseman spam it is.
And if I need units, Grand Master's Chapel allows some very cheap units to be spammed a lot faster than an EC ever could, and at less cost.
Heck, in my game I am now at late Renaissance and still don't have a Great General.
I just focused on Campuses and Commercial Hubs, spending faith on more units (what else are you gonna spend it on, unless you run Jesuit Education or have Monumentality? You don't really need missionaries and apostles once you start rolling).

    This is on Deity btw.
Byzantium is stupid easy to play once you have a decent opener to get started.

Depends on whether or not you want Tagmas.
If you're content rushing Horsemen and upgrading to Coursers (perfectly viable), you don't need to stack culture early for the Tagmas.

That being said, there are big differences between domination civs.
Someone like Cyrus, Alexander or Genghis Khan might be good picks for domination, but have nowhere near the levels of power that Basil II can get.
