Is C3C way harder than CivIII/PTW?

I can't believe... I lost iron (exausted) 10 turns after I secured it..I managed to build only one swordsman. And AI is somewhat smarter and stronger than before.

In C3C I have never had any resource deplete on me yet. True, with there being fewer resources it has been more of a challenge to get them in the first place.

There is a 1 in 100 chance every turn that a resource will deplete if it is connected, you just got shafted by chance.

The only thing I find annoying is that the wonder art isn't in cities, and you can't trade world maps until Navigation. Other than that, I don't see it any harder than PTW.

It actually varies, depending on the resource. Horses don't, I believe. I think Iron is 1 in 800 chance, and coal is 1 in 200. But this can all be confirmed in the editor.

According to the editor, resources have the following stats:

Name: Appearance Ratio (AR)/Disappearance Probability (DP)
Horses: 160/0
Iron: 160/800
Saltpeter: 120/800
Coal: 120/400
Oil: 120/200
Rubber: 120/0
Aluminum: 120/400
Uranium: 100/100

Where:

The editor says with 160 AR and 8 players, you should expect around 2 per player. I'm not sure how the formula works.

1/DP is how likely the resource will disappear; DP = 0 means it never will.

Luxury resources are 0/0, meaning that normally the amount they are distributed is based on the number of players and where they spawn is clustered pretty well (though not always of course). You can turn up the AR to 900; if you do that with luxuries, the continent they are found on will be ridiculously covered with them :) . I tried this on a standard continents map, there was probably at least 30 wines on one continent; and the other continent had the other 7 luxuries.

Bonus resources (oasis, game, gold, etc.) cannot have AR and DP values. I'm not sure how the game decides how they're put in.

The max research time is now 50 turns not 40 and that makes the min research run for a tech more difficult. This is more important on higher levels where you hope to get one tech and trade it round in 2 for 1s.

Despite what col said, I find keeping up in tech a bit easier with the new philosphy bonus. Also, postponement of map/contact trading until middle ages helps keep the AI from surging ahead.

Is it much better than PTW? Im debating with myself whether or not to buy C3C. As one who never had any problems whatsoever with PTW (in fact I quite thought it was much better than Vanilla) I am not too sure Im getting much extra for my dineros.

Read some of the reviews that have been posted on the main CFC page. EVERY review is like a 9/10 rating. C3C is a MUCH better expansion pack than PTW was, and compeltley changes the way the game is played. It is worth its weight in gold. Over Christmas, Amazon.com had C3C for $9.99 (not sure what it is now)!

Hands down, buy C3C. It is like a whole new game!

Thanks for that. I just dont see what is fundamentally wrong with PTW. I play some long term huge maps and I'm not in the least interested in MP. It's my need to expel the stresses built up through my days work!

I'll check trhough some more reader reviews on Gamespot myself and then maybe fork out the £15 over here in the UK its going for! Thanks again!

Seriously buddy, it is worth it. I don't do MP either, and I think that was 90% of the reason for PTW, but C3C is (in my mind) geared towards SP, which is why it is such a huge change!

Everything functions differnetly, more realistically, and makes for new game strategies and challenges.

It is a true must have. :goodjob:

It was enough for me that C3C had more new Civs -- yeah, mayhaps I'm easily pleased. ;) Every other change that has come with C3C has just been an extra bonus, as far as I'm concerned. But I do also like the ToA, the KT, Fascism (ergh -- never thought I'd hear me say that) and the Seafaring & Agricultural traits.

The Conquests seem more like featured Scenarios, than anything else -- but it's true that their quality is pretty high, and so fair enough they should get some limelight. And it seems some of them in particular have a lot of scope for fun multiplayer games. But I've only ever played Hotseat, and if you've tried it, you'll know it's not perfect -- and wouldn't be as fun as the other MP abilties no doubt are.
