Hello, Sir!
Is CivChronicles worth it if you have Civ4 and both of its exp packs?

I want it, mainly for usable version of CivI, but just as nostalgia. As such I haven't bought it, but would buy it in the bargain bin if the price came down significantly.

I'd say no as someone who bought it.

While I started on Civ 2, I generally think that Civ 4 has superseded the previous games. There is some value, but they are pretty much a novelty now - maybe not so much with Civ 3, but definately with 1 and 2. The booklet is interesting, but the card game is pointless and the box doesn't even come with hard copies of the manual. So unless you really, really want it I'd save your money.

Oh, and how it runs/installs on your computer is diabolical too - it creates a totally different directory in C:/Program Files (or whatever it is for your computer) for each game. For the Civ 2 Scenarios, many of them don't work and cause a CTD. The Civ 3 content is good, but things like DYP are missing their graphics which just seems cheap.

I don't see any reason to buy any of the previous games in the Civ series. They don't have anything really new to offer once you've played Civ4. SMAC does, however; the great terraforming features, extremely powerful wonders, and satellite networks have no counterpart in any Civ game. Try it if you're looking for nostalgia.

It IS worth it. At least here in The Netherlands that is. The collection sells for €20 here, which is a steal. And it shows how the series started. Don't let the dated gfx scare you.

Btw Jormungandr, do you also have an account on TES forums (especially in the Past TES games section)? ;)

I would second that. Nothing in CIV-IV can match the design workshop or the alien lifeforms. Very little late game tedium as the endgame goes quite fast thanks to supply crawlers!

It's not a steal for stuff that is really outdated - and I'm not talking graphics. I can guarantee you that things about the previous games will drive you mad - for example, Civ 2's lack of borders/culture means that people can build cities slap bang right in the middle of your empire and you cannot do anything about it apart from declare war. Not to mention that ICS just makes for a tedious clickathon of a game. The GFX is completely irrelevant for me and my opinion - the games in themselves are simply outdated.

And no, sorry. Jormungand[r] is not an uncommon name since it's from mythology. And I'd like to third SMAC. Now that's a classic before it's time and the only one I can still play and genuinely enjoy without irritation.

Some people, though, are saying that Civ1 is still a great game after 16 years!

Civ1 is definitely outdated. But if you don´t know Civ 2 and especially Civ 3 and can find a cheap version of Chronicles, it is definitely worth it. There are alot of civers who prefer Civ 3 over Civ 4 (but of course they post mostly in the Civ 3 forums).

But if you say, you are completely happy with Civ 4, own the whole stuff and there is nothing that should be done in an other way, than there is definitely no need to buy Chronicles.

It really depends. For big fan of the series, it's probably worth it- particularly if you've played Civ I, II, or III before. If you haven't played those games before, it might seem a little "oudated." I started playing at Civ 2. That doesn't seem outdated. I think it's still a great game. Civ IV adds a lot, though. They're different games. I use different strategies for each, but enjoy both of them. You might be able to find cheaper, individual copies of each version if you're worried about money (but it might take some work tracking the stuff down).

CivChronicles is probably worth it if you don't own any other Civ game besides 4, have played the other games in the past... and believe you still can and will play them in the future (I say "can" because some people might not like "reverting" back to prior versions).

Or I can install Civ1 on another computer and play that during the long wait between turns in Civ4. And I can use an extremely easy PC game for the weeks before big competition.

I'd say no civ 2 brings back memories but when I actually try to play it, boredom and ugliness ruin the experience.

Civilization Chronicles provide us with "Civilization: The Card Game". It's really worth playing with other civ fans! :goodjob:

Two friends of mine clubbed together to get me Chronicles last Christmas (mostly so they could beat me up on MP, but they found to their loss that I'm a quick learner). I started out playing Civ I and was hooked. The graphics are awful by today's standards, but the principle of the game was beyond compare, and despite the lack of bells and whistles it was more than good enough to get me hooked. I went straight to Civ IV, then got Warlords, have played Fall from Heaven quite a bit and am now into BtS.

I used to have a social life, but I console with the knowledge that the money I've saved by not going out has helped pay for an Open University course (for you non-UK people, the OU is a non-residential - i.e. you study (mostly) on your own - university).

And people say computer games are a bad thing? Pah!
