Is combat XP linked to combat odds or to unit abilities?

While I've noticed that weaker units give less XP, I don't know whether this is due to the combat odds, or to their capabilities.
To put it another way: if you neutralize an enemy unit's capabilities (frex using a unit with Flanking II against one with first strikes, or luring one with city garrison out of a city), will you still get as much XP for it?

Thanks.

the XP is based on the combat odds between the units.

The lower your Strength > the lower your odds- the more XP you will gain if you win.
There are caps however - you always get at least 1 xp even if odds were 99.9% in your favor.
And you can get a max of 20 XP in one shot if odds were something like 0.5% or less ;)

There is also a promotion you can take (after attaching a GG) that doubles XP gains.
And you get more XP from offense than defense.

Just to correct this slightly, the xp is based on the ratio of the modified strengths of the two units; this means units with first strikes will tend to gain more xp than other units at the same combat odds.

You get twice as much xp for attacking compared to defending at the same strength ratio.

Also, if a unit withdraws it only gets 1 xp, so siege units always get 1 xp even if they survive at low odds.

Attacking with low odds isnt neccesarily incompetece, those Swordsmen stacks from classical wars usually are better spent in a final heroic charge to draw the fiercest of the defending longbows fire while your Macemen walk right behing to clean up. Also attacking with siege weapons at suicidal odds can be worth it.

Download the Advanced combat odds mod, it will visualisate the xp from combat.

So incompetence is rewarded :(

Oh well, thanks for letting me know! :)

Well to be fair most of the time you end up dieing - its only rarely your units survive to get Exp in situations where the odds are against you - you can reload of course to manipulate the RNG (random number generator)
