Is Hugo Chavez On the Road to Becoming a Dictator?

[sing]We're off on the road to MoroccoDictators[/sing]

Yes, I believe so, given some of the provisions behind his latest push to change the Constitution. Yeah, yeah, their assembly or parliament or whatever they're called may vote for it, but they're all aimed to granting Chavez more power for himself and there's no evidence to suggest he'd be content with that, especially now that he'll likely have extra time in office.

Hes been there. He's just taking his time setting up camp.

Yes, changing the constitution in order to keep being re-elected for as long as he wants pretty much sums it up. It's a very unfortunate thing for the people of Venezuela, the opposition is very weak to do anything about it.

I think he is to some extent, but there's a long way to go yet. Oh and if no term limits equals dictatorship, I guess the UK has always been one. I like term limits, but at the end of the day as long as the leader is subject to being voted out in free and fair elections, then democracy is satisfied. Venezuela is still there. I hope it stays there.

It isn't just the term limit issue, though I think I mentioned on a thread about the constitutional proposals that it isn't that there would be no term limits, but that he's pushing it through to benefit himself. If you're going to be doing that, then let it apply to the next guy.

Well he's also eliminating the right of information during a state of emergency, weakening the role of private enterprise in the economic system, and giving himself a lot of power to do pretty much whatever he wants.

Hence the agreeing that to some extent he is. But it's being hugely exaggerated. He's sacrificing a lot of his previously impressive support to make this mistake. He's not the first democratically elected leader to make a power grab. I think he's being held to a higher standard because of his politics. It doesn't excuse what he's doing though.

50 years from now we might be saying that he is dictator now in 2007.

No he not!

Would people say bush was a dictator from 2000-06 since he only cared about passing bloated bills and not caring about the minorty?

This logic fails.

President Bush was elected by people like you and me. He'll leave the office in one year and a little less than two months. That doesn't quantify him as a dictator.

Some people say that, anyway. But as Red Door said, it does not compute.

SO your saying if your elected by people you can be a dicatator? (Chavez was elected) What about people that can be elected unlimited does that make you a dictator (If you say yes then Uk, and others in europe are dictators!)

not compute.
My reasons was a dicactor ignored his people (that what bush did!)

It is certainly possible to elect dictators (And no, Bush is not a dictator).

Dictator: a person exercising absolute power, esp. a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession.

He is well on the way.
