Is it just me?

Or, even in the middle of the night when I wake up (I play music overnight) and don't even know what the song's title or album is, I can tell who plays which instruments? (Mostly on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers records.)

Is there a name for this?

When I'm awake, I can hear the differences between the....errr....whoever's playing what. But in the middle of the night, it's kind of blurry. Maybe just memory. But then how come I can't remember the album or sogn title?

You're not conscious enough to recall the song title, but you're such a Tom Petty fanatic that you know who plays what instruments - - so when you wake and recall this, then ask why -- you are correlating this fact with sleep and creating focus upon it, thus you're creating a pattern and continuing to notice it. It's just your mind processing it's knowledge between REM sleep (which should be obvious) and consciously being awake (also obvious).

Cut the Tom Petty music dear. Try something else. If this continues, you're insane (or Autistic!)

Maybe it's because I'm tired, but I laughed on this.

But yes, the reason that you know who is playing which instrument is that you know the band members well enough to tell that.

I've never had anything like this. Then again, I never made an effort to learn the names of people in a band, so even if I were capable of such an episode, I could not do it since I'd have no idea who those people were.
