Do you think the board members are generally representative of their nationalitites political positions? Do you think, for instance, that the attitudes of the combined French/american/english etc posters here is an accurate representation of the views of France, US and UK?

Nope, at least for Finland. I think our our representation here comes down to Mathilda and bunch of teen<>middle-aged duuds (i assume, 31 for myself). Internet forums skew the demographics quite a lot.

Not really. The majority of people where I live don't even know what a message board is. They're the "take your lunch pale to work" kind of blue collar people that are only interested in the things as far as their daily lives take them.

No, not for the United States. This board is way more "libertarian" than the American public.

Not even close. I think the religious representation is a good example of that too.

Yeah, undoubtedly religion isnt represented accurately on the boards. I wish

I guess my work here is done. :D

I do not believe so. I think the prowar crowd here in the US is larger than is represented here on Civilization Fanatics Center.

RedRalphWiggum,

There's far more "free market fundamentalism" here among the Americans than actually exists in American society. It's the dominant feature of the American foreign policy -- perhaps American government -- but the American people themselves are not seemingly-libertarian like that. Market fetishism is not part of popular opinion; polls consistently show that the American people's views on actual issues are to the left of the Democratic party (e.g., a plurality of Republicans polled support universal healthcare even if it requires higher taxes).

(The failure of the American polity to reflect that sentiment is, in my opinion, a result of a hopelessly inane political discourse in which the candidates' stances on issues are almost never discussed.)

"Obama"? More like Ron Paul!

My point exactly.

Cleo

OK, thanks Cleo, think I understand now. Yeah its true, have heard far, far more about Obamas lack of experience, his skin colour and his youth than his policies, ditto gender, mannerisms and emotions for Clinton and age, health and having been tortured status of McCain than any of their policies. Irish politics is shallow, but positions are still the most important factor.

for France, (I'm french-tunisian) the opinions of the french posters on this forum do represents the urban-white-collar-40ies. MamboJoel, Steph and Marla Singer are the typical center right folks, Chystoff is close to a bobo (bourgeois-bohème), maybe a little bit leftist bobo :-). We do not see the extemes though: no Font National-De Villiers supporters and no Communist-Marxist-Trotskist neither.
Now concerning the US (I lived 3 years there), people on this forum are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to liberals and non religious compared to the "average" american.
Concerning Tunisia (I was born there), I am the only tunisian poster and I am definetly too liberal and unreligious compared to an average tunisian

Red Ralph Wiggum,

With all due respect, I don't think you can imagine how actually stupid it is. Our pre-eminent political "journalists" spent a whole week discussing the fact that Hillary Clinton wore an outfit that indicated, in a very vague and incredibly non-sexual way, that she had breasts. Without a doubt, the most commonly-known fact about John Edwards -- a presidential candidate who was polling in the 20s -- was how much he paid for haircuts. Unimaginably stupid.

but why is that? American people arent stupid, its clear from this very forum they can form informed political opinions (even if I rarely agree with them)... why is this the main basis of political coverage?
