With the tech additions in G&K, plus the nerfing of great scientists, is a space victory still possible?

Yes, very. You just can't get it in the 1920s anymore (I did that like 5 times in vanilla).

I've gotten it twice in G&K now and had 2 more times where I could have gotten it bc I had the techs but just found a diplo easier. While they nerfed the Great Scientists badly, the Academies are powerful tools where placed near a city with huge buffs early (I had SIX in one city with a 150% buff and the +15% from rationalism... the future techs were only 8 turns worth of beakers had I gotten that far).

I did it twice in the last week, once as Celts, once as Arabia. Sure, great scientists don't bulb as much science, but you get more of them, and if you choose the right religion benefits, you're cranking public schools in 14-20 size cities without banks or theaters. Just saying, prioritizing science bonus buildings earlier is easier. This is on emp difficulty.

My experience on King difficulty has been that Diplo has surpassed Cultural as the most difficult victory to achieve. Space can be done once you unlearn the habit of saving GS for late game techs. Using early GS to drop Academies in the early game has become a much more viable strategy now that they cannot bulb expensive techs in one shot. One suggestion; if you do decide to bulb a tech make sure that you've pre-selected the next tech you want before you do it. That way if ther's any overflow it will be applied to your next tech.

Open tech tree, select a designated "beeline" tech down the line. You'll research appropriate techs until you reach that "destination". Also helpful in research agreements.

Quite doable and still one of the easier winning conditions.

I got an emperor space win today with the Babylonians, 1860, standard, continents, my best speed yet. More typically it happens mid twentieth century with a less science oriented civ.

I planted a lot of great scientists around Babylon, 8 or so. The city was pumping out around 800 bulbs by game's end and my civ was putting out over 1200 total. Lots of RA action, but I didn't burn any scientists on tech until the end when I could be sure that my science output was strong enough to get any tech in a single turn. I saved Oxford until the information age and managed to grab the Hubble telescope, which helped. Full freedom tree and lots of academies is the way to go now.

Need to try this out with Korea for giggles, they might do even better.

Cultural victory is just boring, not "difficult".

I have to disagree. Cultural does take more time than any of the other victory types and therein lies the difficulty. You can lose while pursuing a Cultural victory not because you aren't playing a good, or even a great, game. You can lose because Babylon launched the space ship four turns before you finished the Utopia project. You can lose because Alexander covets your cultural Great Wonders and sends in a horde of troops. It's a balancing act and although it isn't to everyone's taste "not difficult" strikes me as a facile characterization.

Probably the easiest win condition on deity ... GS can pop techs in one shot late game provided you get your bpt high enough (800~1000) ...And you can do that with 1 city only provided you get to settle capital near mountain ...

Buy with gold all the science buildings for your capital as soon as they become available (and prioritize them on your tech path) - always keep all the scientist specialist slots manned ...

Spam and plant GS ASAP ... use spies to open up eras and get more spies ... As usual save oxford and rationalism finisher for the end techs ...

Try to get the porcelain tower ...so endgame your RAs will be able to pop techs as before ...

I laughed as I win science victory with my faith powered rockets. Mwahahahaha! Go Celts!

Won with Russia in Space Victory on emperor... can't remember when the ship went off but it was between 1960 and 1980. With only three cities I came quickly from behind with my 7 spies and a few great scientists. Hubble pushed my capital to produce parts in 4 turns. Really easy

Interesting. How big was your city, peddroelm? I had 6 cities (10-11-17-21-15-13) pumping science for me yesterday to achieve 900 bpt at peak. Launched around 1870. All GS's were used for bulbing though.

Yeah it's definitely still possible. I won one my first game back for G&K with the celts, which as you can tell was played quite non-optimally and sloppy (who goes science with the celts?).

I ended up having to invade China's continent and nuke them a couple of times to force them to focus on me rather than completing their space ship parts, but in the end I could have wiped them out and still had another 30-40 turns to spare before Harun would have caught up.

With the the huge happiness boosts from religion, it is not too hard to get huge BPT from the sheer amount of cities you can build.
I had 2000+ BPT by the time I launched my spaceship on immortal.
Must be even easier with Pacal and his ridiculous UB.

If u play on huge its the only way.
Diplo= too hard
Domination= impossible
Time=someone else will have won

Funny thing, just launched the ship in the mid 1800s :coffee: If you know what you're doing it's probably the easiest VC IMO.

You can also select your next tech after the "bulb" goes off. The great scientists were actually getting me a tech and one turn away from the next one at the end of my last game (my science was through the roof). It'll just ask you to choose a technology again as if you had just researched one.
