Here's my situation.
I live in New Zealand, but I really wanted the preorder (presell, presale, whatever) edition, and since it's North America only, I ordered it from Amazon and got it shipped to someone in the states who is going to ship it to me. Now Amazon are screwing around, and it looks like it's going to be delayed (although it still says 1st November delivery). Plus it comes on CD rather than DVD.

So what should I do? Cancel my Amazon order and purchase it here in NZ for ~$63US and get it on the 3rd November (NZ release date) from a regular store. Or I should I stick to my order and get the pre-order edition?

The only difference between the two is the spiral bound manual (rather than glue), CD soundtrack, and box right?

As a side note, how can a pre-order edition be on back order??? I order it in advance so they know how many they'll need, and can manufacturer the right amount. Crazy.

Civilisation is one of the most popular games on the planet and is enjoyed by millions of people, it is also enjoyed by people that want it as soon as it comes out, as this forum clearly shows (:) ). You can probably conclude from that, that production might be the problem causing pre-orders to go on back orders rather than them simply not ordering enough.

Assuming you have other things to occupy yourself, I think it's worth a few days wait. :)

Uh, I saw "is it worth it?" and voted yes, but then saw the "worth waiting a couple days for?", and... no, it isn't. The game is what's important, and I'd have traded even the regular packaging for just the disks and a manual written on toiletpaper if I could have played the game even tonight rather than tomorrow.

No, it's not worth it. If EB doesn't have my pre-order waiting for me tomorrow, screw it, I'll just get the regular version.

Hmmm... all this actually depends on each individual. From my personal experience, i would say that the Civilization game series is definately worth the wait. This is because you would then treasure every single second with the game. Furthermore, the game is here to last! Imagine how many times you'll be playing it. WOW! No doubt we are all a little impatient for this fantastic Civ4 but the final word is, IT'S COMING!

Sometimes to avoid all this misery, the developers should mention that the release that should be Dec (for example), but deliver it in Oct/Nov (like the situation we are in), then we will be like singing praises to them and complimenting how 'understanding' the developers are. It's all in the marketing! That's something i learn from my MBA. Thank god that will be over in a week's time for me to enjoy my Civ 4!

well now doesn't that make perfect sense. Slot the finish at October, announce to the public that the finish will be in Dec. Reannounce an earlier shipping date.
Marketing may have been a fun field to enter. A bit Orwellian mixed with like the Vikings calling Icland, "Iceland" and Greenland "Greenland" .
At any rate i think the pre order is worth it. They only make these games once in a while and maybe this is the final round for all we know. Might as well have fun with it from the get go.

It's not worth waiting a few extra days for. I'm betting the people who said it was are the ones who are getting it today and don't have to wait extra days. If you ordered from Amazon you either wait until Friday or Monday for the pre-release version or you get a regular version today. I bet most people would pick the regular version today.

Good day mate. On the contrary, i'm at the land down under (Australia) where all the disadvantages are with me. Official release date in Aus is 4thNov. But i've ordered my preorder version which after much calculation will also be coming on 4thNov.

We should learn to slow down and enjoy the beautiful things in life... and not let it pass us by so quickly. No doubt a great game but take the time to enjoy it too ya.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I got a response from Amazon saying it is on hand and ready to ship. Although they didn't give an explanation on why it hasn't shipped yet, they said it would reach me (well, my contact) on the 1st Novemember as originally stated. So I think I'll stick with them for the moment. Especially since they've changed the order status to shipping soon, and I can't cancel it.

Is it worth waiting a couple of days for..yes. From the pics I've seen the box looks awesome. 6 months down the road some of you guys will be really wishing you got the collectible version. What's 2 days or a week without playing the game? Come on guys...is everyone really that desperate not to wait for a good deal?

I just got a call from my local EB telling me my pre-order edition is in.

Unfortunatley, I'll be working past 9pm today so I'll have to pick it up during lunch tomorrow.

At any rate, I'm one of those who are very borderline whether my two laptops can handle the graphics (due to T&L) and reading some of the recent installed T&L thread - looks like its a no go for me. I'm gonna have to throw down for another computer (JUST FOR CIV!!!)

BUT

I'd have pre-ordered it ANYWAY. Why?

Simple:

1) I'm gonna buy it at some point anyway
2) Therefore, why pay the same price and NOT get the pre-order edition?

(... there are some corporate finance specialists who will be mumbling something about the time value of money, but it's all good...)
