...save pictures as different file types besides .bmp with Internet Explorer?

I never have any other options; even when the picture isn't a .bmp image I can't save it as its file type. And right now I am especially annoyed, since I'm trying to save a .gif file as .gif, and I could save it as .bmp and then change it to .gif in an image-editing program, but doing so messes it up a little. Why oh why can't IE just let me save it as .gif originally?

I used to have a similar problem - sometimes IE allowed me to save images in their original formats, with original names, and sometimes only as .bmp with some default name.
I can tell you how I solved it: I switched to Opera :D.

Maybe try saving the whole page with images (not only HTML).

I second the advice of switching to Opera.:)

Can't you save the whole webpage in IE with frames and images included?

I third the Opera suggestion ;)

I used to have the same problem with IE. I *think* its when your temporary internet files folder is full. Go to Tools > Internet Options and in the middle of the box that pops up under the "Temporary Internet Files" heading click the button "Delete Files".

I fourth changing to Opera.

@Speedo - It can't be. I just cleaned my files and I still can't save in any other file format other than BMP.

Yes, it is the TIF being full. Doing what Speedo suggested will allow you to save in other file formats. You may need to restart your browser after doing this.

As for which browser is better, well, they all have their ups and downs. Some more than others.

you can always save as bmp/jpg and then with some editor save to whatever your fancy wants. one free editor is inrfanview, irfanview.com

Yes, and that's usually what I do, but sometimes switching to .gif messes up the colors (and no, I'm talking about losing color information--I mean dots of wrong colors appear and stuff), even when the file type of the image on the internet is .gif. At least, this happens with Paint and Microsoft Photo Editor.

@Speedo and Turner: Thanks, I'll try that.

don't think i've had that problem. i use IE at work too and i used it for that purpose today and had no problems.

is it the most recent version? (I have 6.0 here)

or get Mozilla Firebird, which is the one i use at home.

I've had that problem too. Sometimes, when the image would not load fully, it would not be able to be saved under the original name, or the original format (i.e. gif).
