So, Trade routes are super useful....got it.

So I need to protect these bad boys, especially from aliens early on. Is there any way to setup units to automatically stay with the trade units?

There's a building (I forgot which one. Maybe the fence thingy?) that has a quest going with it that gives you the option to protect any trade route against aliens without needing to guard them.

Yep, Ecology tech lets you build an ultrasonic fence, after which you'll get a quest which allows you to cover your trade vessels with it as well, rendering them immune to aliens.

Yea get a fence built in your capital asap if you're going heavy on trade. Its an early tech and lets you trade without worry once you get the quest for it.
