I cant remember the last time I started alone on a continent or Island. It was civ 2 at least. Russia is always starting alone on an island! I was wondering if there was any way to start or get better chance to start on a big island/continent without interfering with the map size ( I use normal)

i'm sure some will come in here and say archipelagos but those maps sucks because they really lack hammers and you're limited to 3 or 4 cities

Yes you can. Stop playing with the original map script which are coded by morons for morons and download smart script were it will be possible to choose to start alone on a island/continent.

edit: or perhaps the name was smart map.

where is this script?

that's good...
some people should really get paid by firaxis...if people could place patent on their mods it would cost lots of money to firaxis..lol

Yes you can, on Vanilla Civ IV, no special script needed. Just start a custom game, 2 civs (close all the other AI positions) custom continents, one continent per civ. I'm playing one right now. Large map. Two continents. I'm on one and Toku is on the other. It's very boring but I'm learning about city management. The only pressure I feel is from those pesky barbs. I can't seem to keep my economy up so I think I send my fleet of a gazillion Frigates/Galleons loaded with grenade guys and cavalry to Toku for a good ole' Napoleanic "welcome to the party, pal!" :)

i tried the smartmap. I chose a normal size. one civ per continent.

it didnt work. the map had 3 continents. I closed the game, started another one...same thing...

also, go into custom games, select custom continents, set number of civs, set number of continents to one per team. pretty sure that'll put each team on their own island - can't remember what happened when i tried it.

This is how you do it- if at first you dont succeed...

Is there any way to get the old Civ 2 continents script happening? I remember that being far less contrived than civ 4. Lots of seperate landmasses, some huge, some small, and civs were even spaced apart properly.

For what it's worth, I've been playing Smart Map, Small map, one continent per player. and I just close one AI civ. I always start all on my lonesome.

It seems that, depending on map size, you have to remove one or more AI civs to get a start with your very own continent.

we all start on somewhat different big land masses. the only thing is that they are linked by small legs of earth

How many different civs are you trying to start with? The readme says that if your conditions are impossible to satisfy, they will be ignored.

If you are trying to start with many, many civs, each to its own island, on a Standard size map, that might qualify as impossible to satisfy.
