Is this a bug, or a feature?

I am not very good at this yet, so I was pleased to have had some success attacking Russia.
I captured a couple of cities, and I had Moscow beaten down to just a tick of red.
Then, Siam DOW, and captures Moscow out from under me.
Is that a bug, a feature?
Is it avoidable?

Well, no bug, no feature, just clever strategy from the Siam AI there. I tend to do so myself when opportunity arises. If you bombard a city and intend to capture it, make sure no other AI is within striking distance and can take it before you can. Often you can place your mele troops around to block of any suspect AI troops.

Need to make sure you bring enough dates to the party;-)

I usually bombard to red and make sure I have two strong infantry assault units, if not three, in striking distance--hopefully supported by a Great General. If you don't finish it on the turn you start it, you are pretty much asking for others to jump in. Of course, it all depends on where the fight is loacted and who else is at war with the weak city.

more a case of dumb luck on part of the ai

yeah you have to watch your allies if they are attacking or near a city at the same time as you and make sure that you don't take the city down too far without taking it when the ai has a strong unit nearby.

I've had the same thing happen - once it was ottomans (I wiped them out shortly thereafter), and once a CS ally.

yeah.. they like to 'help' (themselves).

One thing to note is that while they think it's bad for *you* to take capitals or kill another AI entirely, they have no problems with that if it's the last bits of a civ. They'll all just look at the score then mass attack the poor AI til it's dead.

Feature; and something I've done to the AI in Civ 5. And I've done close-equalivents to that to my allies in Civ 3 & Civ 4 a lot.

I agree. It is one of the few AI tactics that they do well, which includes encampments (esp. the ones the C-S wants gone). I do the same thing early on with my scout. If I see a camp being attacked, I swoop in with my scout to capture, get the gold and the c-s bonus.
