Is this a bug or does France just suck?

Actually it wouldn't be CivII without it.

But the Tank vs. Spearman - Tank loses, it's alway my tank :(
 
I hate when a spearman defeats a tank. I look at it like this. A tank can fire a shell from many yards, and in modern times even miles away. The spearman is standing there in the city, trying to protect it, but he cant throw a spear that far, and even if the tank was with the range of a spear, a spear isnt going to do any damage to a tank. I look at the realistic point of view.
 
Molotov cocktails don't do anything to a tank, regardless of what movies will have you believe. I mean, tanks are designed to withstand hits from other tanks, what makes you think a wimpy poor-man's-grenade is going to do anything?

And the spearman STILL wouldn't be able to throw his spear far enough to hit a tank that was firing at him from a mile away.
 
No, what really happens is that the spearman sneaks up behind the tank, opens the hatch and pokes the officer in charge with his 6 foot spear. He then pulls the officers sidearm and kills the rest.....
 
A well placed one into the eye hole of a tank will cause its crew to flee from the tank effectively disabling it. This would require sneaking up to the tank of course -- this is why tanks do not go into cities without infantry support. Now hermetically sealed modern armor then no but WW2 era armor yes.
 
I just vote for France sucks......>_>'' I don't like the frenchies, I used to play as them and I would loose all the time, then I choose the Germans and instantly started to kick some butt!
 
This has never happened to me before, mainly because by that time period I would already have nuclear weapons and nuke the living crap out of most nations (forget bombardment!)

have a big army of bombers to kill almost everything in the city before I take it over with my trusty tanks
 
Wow, I really on Blitzkreig tactics....and they usally work with minimal loss.....Tanks can't go in by themselves, they need infinitry or they are screwed!

really?!? I'd say that Modern Armor are safe going in by themselves. Normally, unless they have Mech Infantry (which i hardly ever build) they are always defending the city. If the Mech Infantry is regular, they are on top of them


PS-were those cities large? Mech Infantry can get some big bonus' from Metropoli (plural form of metropolis?)

PPS-Artillery seems to be a little more effective in hurting units, so you could try using that maybe
 
I played France last night ... didnt get to finish the game as I had work this morning but they did well. Frenchie Swordsmen killing off War Elephants and one guy was awesome. He stood on a hill and defensively wiped out a redlined longbow, a spearmen, and ... wait for it .. a modern infantry ... And all through the fights he was one indestructible hit point .. In addtion I had wiped out the Carthaginians, Dutch and Indians. The Arabs got killed by the Hittites and the English and Babylonians had 3 cities apiece by 1980, I reckon I was in a winning position, 1700 points vs 1000 for the Hittites and enough troops that I was strong against them.
 
Nope .. proper powered by rubber Infantry .. I had them too .. just didnt have any convenient in the area, the Sword got upgraded to guerilla when he got back. It was an odd game, never actually got a musketeer to kill anything so could build them all the time and no GA ...

cruise missiles are amazing. i stacked up you can easilly wipe out a ton of units.

with lethal sea and land bombardment, you can wipe them out in no time!

Yes, I agree that lethal bombardment is helpful. But this unit is a one-and-done deal. IOW, you fire it off and then you have to build another one. The things cost 60 shields, have a range of only 4, and a bombardment of 16. Compare this to a bomber, which has an operational range of 10 (2.5 times as far) at a cost of only 40 shields more (100 total) and a bombardment of 12. The thing is, bombers are reusable turn after turn after turn, whereas cruise missiles aren't. Shoot, for that matter, you can double the shields (120) and build a radar artillery, which has greater mobility and is also reusable. Compared to cruise missiles, radar artillery pays for itself after just two turns in combat, and is pure profit every combat thereafter. It has the same bombardment and double the movement points.

You spend your shields the way you want, dude, but for me bombers and radar artillery are the way to go. I like cruise missiles for the eye candy effect.
