Issue running Civilization IV on Vista

I've tried this game SEVERAL times (i've been trying to patch, update, unistall, install, etc.) for nearly 3 and half hours now.
simply loading the game, the following message occurs as the game is loading. 'Sid Meier's Civilization IV has stopped working :close program'

if I download and apply patch 1.74 the message changes to a RED ex'ed box telling me the something .dll file isn't working.

if I try to update the .dll file, then i go BACK to 'Sid Meier's Civilization IV has stopped working :close program'.

HELP....

THere you will be with many, and I mean many, others who share you pain. Mybe try googling you problem on the search bar. Believe me your not the first to have problems of this nature
