We had a thread back when this trial was announced to be going ahead, and the general consensus seemed to be that it was lunacy and no judge could possibly convict. Well, it looks like we were wrong.

I am absolutely astounded that the scientist have been given jail time for this, or even been charged with a crime. Is there something I'm missing here, or is it as horrific as it sounds?

The court is seriously ******** as I even know that major earthquakes are almost impossible to predict. Also whats even more awkward they got multiple manslaughter, not involuntary manslaughter....Im surprised at such a verdict or even the fact that scientists were brought before a court.

Only in Italy should be the European equivalent to only in Florida.

How come scientists are expected to be watchdogs for natural disasters like earthquakes, but not global warming?

This is absolutely outrageous. What can be done to fix this injustice?

It appears to have been a case of bad timing, with the geologists annnouncing just a few days before the quake that, yes this is an active seismic zone, but no, there is no indication of immediate danger.

So much for any science being done in Italy.

This is horrific, that judge deserves time in prison. Luckily it's just a regional court and hopefully some court above this one will overrule it(Let's hope for Italy's sake that that court is not located in Strasbourg).

Can these scientists appeal to the european court of human rights?

I think so, but they would have to go before the highest Italian court first.

Bizarre to say the least. Grossly unfair.

That said, the scientists did commit a mistake, and thus a reprimand was probably deserved, After all, this is what he said:

To say "there is no danger" is indeed giving out false information. He should just have said "the situation looks favorable, BUT there's no way to be certain".

But of course going to jail over this is outrageous, and 6 years in jail for this is plain lunacy and they should indeed appeal to a human rights court.

Edit: and reading more through the article it does seem that the other scientists all warned that an earthquake could not be ruled out. So this is even more unfair than I previously thought.

i fear it will be. not exactly sure about the italian juidicial system, but often higher authority is only able to change the sentence, not the verdict.

they could weasel out by giving them a minor fine, of course.

I gotta wonder if a judge convicted them or a jury

And his name will be treated with the utmost respect ;)

I'm sure that meant no additional danger - people there know its seismically active

In Britain, a higher court can and often will totally overturn a 'guilty' or 'not guilty' verdict - the court will in effect be saying that the lower court interpreted the law incorrectly. I'm certain that this is the same in Italy.

This is bizarre. This will never stand in European court, but I hope they get released earlier.

I know nothing about EU law, but you'd think that a EU appeals court would strike this down
