I've had it up to here with Golden Ages!

I have had it with these events shooting certain civilizations into the middle ages while the rest of us struggle along in the classical iron age!

First thing, then, is no more UUs.

But my question is this: how do I prevent Golden Ages being triggered by Great Wonders? I could unflag all the great wonders so that they're not associated with any civilization traits, but then will the AI build any of them? One would hope that the AI builds the wonders because of the effects they provide, but maybe they don't... :(

Any comments, tips? Maybe I'm completely going off my rocker here.

AFAIK, AI will still build wonders even without the characteristics flagged. Just realize that wonders flagged with Militaristic can built during war-time mobilization, so you'd be loosing that ability.

I too, think the Golden Age thing in Civ 3 is kinda dumb. It is tricky to pop and you can only do it once. You don't need to get rid of UUs, per se, but just need to unflag the "start golden age" flag.. .but you probably knew that.

You should consider leaving them in but shortened to 5-10 turns.

Or if you untag the wonders, make sure they produce decent culture (3-5 per turn) and the AI will still build them.

With my expanded game system, you can switch on/off the golden age for each era.
Meaning that:
a) You can prevent a civ from having golden age in some eras
b) You can choose in which era a civ can have a golden age
c) You can decide that a civ can have several golden ages (max one for each era)

And you can also have the golden age length vary with eras.

Yeah, I was going to just un-flag all the UUs so that they would still be in the game only not capable of starting golden ages.

But perhaps it's better to first see if reducing the time of Golden Ages will suffice? I like the 5-10 turns idea = less work for me! :)

What this thread needs is a poll. Since it doesn't have one, here's my take on the matter; I like them. You can get so much done during a golden age.

If you do not like them, but want to make sure that the AI still builds Wonders, just go to the General Settings Menu in the editor and set the duration of the Golden Age to one year. That is the simplest and fastest way that I can think of solving your problem.

So Steph, is your expanded game system actually usable now?

I'm using it regularly to test. I have some crashes from time to time when playing Civ, but if I restart a save game, it doesn't happen, it's more a random crash, so I'm not sure if it's because I switched to 7 or because of something from my monitor.
Also, I want to improve it on a few points before making a public release.
However, if someone wants to test it, I can provide it.

I really don't think a display peripheral would cause a software crash. It could be the graphics drivers, though.

I play 1000 turn games and set a minimum of 25 turns to find a new tech.
Is it possible to make research turns maximum and minimum at something like 25 turns? Like maybe make the "maximum" time to research a tech 25, and then make all the techs cost something like 999. That way, everybody would be on the same tech schedule regardless of how big or small their civ was.

Of course, that would make scientific improvements utterly useless. I could make them all cultural, plus there would be the ones that could give you a free tech (if I wanted that to happen on occasion). With a variety of different tech trees (civ or culture specific) I could still "time" everything so that I'm not getting medieval knights fighting the Neo-Assyrians. I like counterfactuality, but not that degree of counterfactuality!

Thoughts?

Hmm something like that would definitely make the game very level, and make a Wonder like the Great Library or one that give you a free tech advance that much more valuable. Be interesting to try it.

Cool, I think I'm going to try this regimented approach to tech research times. Then I can keep the Golden Ages for at least a production and financial boost.

I can set the maximum science research levels in the Government tabs, right? That way I could set them all at 10% (in case 0% means no techs get researched ever), so that the AI doesn't waste money on research. Hmm, this might actually mean the AI will have some money in the bank!
