So far the only confirmed 'Japan' in this game is Age3 civ. Sure if there's a Age2 Shogunate, the UU will be without doubt, Samurai Infantry, from the onset of the Age.
But what about Age3?

My idea would be
UC: Mangaka; basically did the same thing as Greek Logioi, note much of postwar 'tech and innovations' that came from Japan are all rooted from what appeared in popular Mangas. AFAIK there were AT LEAST Two instances.
- The first female Japanese Astronaut, who said she became an astronaut because she's a fan of Leiji Matsumoto's space operas (to date he's best known of Space Scifi, this due to himself fond of outer space, and at one point even wanted to buy a Space Tour, unfortunately when the first Space Tourist went to space, he's too old for that, and tourism was (and still) too expensive even for him who already earned so much for his famous works.
- 'Senzu Bean Gel', clearly inspired by Akira Toriyama's Dragonball franchise. now a WIP product that aimed to do the same energy restorations exactly as described in Dragonball series.
There maybe more but both are what I did recall.

UU: Battoutai,
Originally a company of 100 former samurais who still capable of swordsmanship, recruited by the Government to suppress Satsuma Rebellion because previous measures (modern peasant conscripts) were proven inefficient against Rebel Samurais, Later their success against rebellion led to the Japanese renewed interests in Kenjutsu, something the newly modernized nation previously abandoned it. Shortly traditional fencings (both of swords, and polearms) became standard foot soldiers martial arts, which geared Imperial Japanese Army Infantry force towards shock troops infantry, well into the end of the Empire. (this explained why Japanese Army loves Bayonet Charges so much, even developed Jukendou especially for it)
And End of Game.

Is this a good choice? I don't really think new rules would fit in with Zero Fighter much...
there's still more but whatchuall think?

Meiji Japan's unique military unit is the Zero again. Their unique civilian unit has yet to be seen.

I'm not sure how much of Post WWII Japan content they will implement, considering they specifically are calling it Meiji Japan in game.
For unique infrastructure I could see a Zaibatsu unique quarter.

Confirmed?
But since all UUs are needed to have graphical changes when tech progressions unlocked their advanced iterations. mmm
don't say that 'Jet Zero' will be something that came out of many mangas written by Leiji Matsumoto?

There is the possibility it could be a unique skin for a generic fighter since units are more unique now, but a Zero fighter was seen in the Switch reveal where they announced Himiko and Meiji Japan.

^ It better be ethnicity specific model.
My idea is that FXis would study history if Modern Japanese Imperial Army throughoutly, their infantry traditions revolved around bayonet combat so much,
This fit well with their government strategic decisions to emphasis on Navy (thus Navy got more budgets, and better wargear, and Army got less). this affects Army doctrines considerably. To this end Japanese Army doctrines would like artillery to stock up most shells and unleashes these into enemy before infantrymen charging them, I THINK IJA Infantrymen were quite undersupplied, less ammo allocated per day than anyone else.
To this end i'd like Battoutai to be their UU, representing their infantry for the entirety of Japanese Empire, (roughly half maintenance with strong attack but weak defense)

As has already been mentioned, we’ve seen a Zero already, and the Dougo Onsen is also using the modern, early Shouwa period version of the building.

For unique districts there’s just tons of stuff you could use.
Zaibatsu and foreign schools for Meiji, skipping Taishou and early Shouwa you can go with Shinkansen (JP railway renown), concrete castles (symbols of rebuilding, tourism), video game companies (obviously meta-reference since it’s in a game, but the famous rebirth of video game business after the crash) and likely boatloads more.

That's why I mentioned maybe nothing post WWII, because we have seen the Zero fighter.

It could be possible we see things closer to the late 20th century, but I'm not sure considering other contemporary civs will be Mughal India and Qing China.

This is a great concept. Perhaps something broader like "kantoku" to include other creatives like Kurosawa, Ozu, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ishiro Honda, Shigeru Miyamoto, etc.
