I totally forgot about Ashoka. I like your suggestion though, he seems like a big personality to boot.

His face looks very.. western from that angle.

Anyway, really liked the leader choice. Nobody was expecting something like that but I see the reception is very positive.

Curious how Germany seems to be getting a lot of first looks for the game. They had the first interview/stream at E3 too.

But finally! A new leader! Gods be praised! Now just show us one of those never before seen Civs Firaxis ;)

I wonder why they didn't reveal Germany as a Civ in those previews.

Looks like Firaxis seems to scramble every leaders in the game. Maybe they want the players to learn the new leaders or sort? It's a good thing actually. :p
I do hope that they do it for all civs.
And wow he is actually from Hojo clan!

:woohoo: What a great choice. He died young at 34.

I'm quite impressed they would go back as far as the Kamakura Shogunate for a leader. In the popular Western imagination, Japan tends not to exist until the Sengoku period, and it's no surprise that Civs II through IV (plus Rev) had Tokugawa Ieyasu as the leader. (Oda Nobunaga in V was a surprise, considering he never actually ruled Japan, but he was nonetheless an iconic Sengoku figure.) Hojo Tokimune was a very important ruler who absolutely deserves recognition, and a very pleasant surprise.

Like many others, I had been hoping for the Meiji Emperor. I still hold out hope that this game will get multi-leader civs and that he will be an option, since I think he's long overdue for an appearance in this franchise. But I have no complaints at all about Hojo.

(And yes, it's amusing to see him adorned in Triforces, but to be fair, that was the actual emblem of the Hojo clan, centuries before Legend of Zelda was a thing.)

Germany is a pretty important market for PC and strategy games. It is a bit strange that they would reveal a Japanese leader there. Maybe soon a Japancese gaming mag will reveal Barbarossa. :D

Very unlikely. Japan has very strict rules about depictions of the imperial family in media and Firaxis would have to make a different ruler just for the Japanese version. That's why we always have a Shogun in Civ games.
Although, with multiple leaders there's a small possibility that they will make an anywhere-but-Japan-exclusive DLC. They could bundle him with Mao Zedong.

edit: Of course the bundle would then be exclusive to anywhere-but-Japan-and-China.

Wikipedia says that he is responsible for Zen Buddhism becoming firmly established in Japan. Which means religion related bonuses for sure!

I have a confession to make: I never played as Japan in Civ5. Not even after they updated them in BNW. So I'm really interested on them this time around.

I played them once for the achievement, but I found all the warfare-centric one-trick-civs with two UUs pretty boring.

    Barbarossa would be very fun!

If they're going to make DLC exclusive from China they may as well throw in Tibet :D

Same probably applies to Thai's current royal family, so no Mongkut as leader of Siam.
