By request, here is a japan game I played recently, mainly to test if you can stop the inca as commented in my Inca v102 test. couple of findings, bugs and misc.
Japan VP:
- Whales work, could include pearls and crab as well for that "sushi" feel, while lowering it to 10 VPs. Would feel like a Sids Sushi co reference in a way. If you trade away whales, you loose points. So you cant trade yourself to victory here, as you cant trade resources you have yourself in civ V. You can trade away your victory if you're not careful.
- isolation works, although you wont get many points if you don't invade Korea and coastline china. Trade routes from india, Arabia, Europe will stop the points accumalation. I am guessing this is intended, as it reflects the shogunate and later imperial japans behaviour. I got 90 points the first 100 turns, 5 the next 200 turns, so destroy those trade ships
Bugs and misc:
- Conquistadors work from japan towards the Aztec, but not the Inca. I think this should confirm that there is a bug in the conquistadors inca code. Nice to see that a epedemic spawns as well, and that it doesent infect your units on city capture.
- puppeted cities on conquest behave like puppets, founded cities that are above gov.cap will produce your first selected then building, then sit idle. I believed this to be the intended function, but it really hampers large empires.
- city states and pirate cities. The pirate cities will often loose all territory a couple of turns after they spawn or flip. This is also present for mediterranean cities. This turns them into no productive placeholders, easily defeated as they wont grow beyond size 1. It also means that the resources from the city states wont be available, negating the benefit of having the city states as an ally (and removing the benefit to keep you administered cities to a minimum, while keeping the resources and territory.)
- Free policies force you to choose, and cant be invested as culture.
- AI american indians should maybe be deleted at some point, they're irrelevant lategame.
In general, Japan is a fun build-for-late campaign, that requires quite a lot of war in asia to actually win as intended. The 50 VPs per whale is a bit exessive though.
IF you get a free policy, from oracle, exploration, ideology wonder, world congress project and similar sources, you HAVE to pick another policy, which might throw you out of your selected government early. If you don't have a lot of culture banked, you might wreck your civ path that way.
Spawn of aztec conqs, but not inca conqs.
Spawned in pirate cities will delete your tiles on destrction, I had bought the crab and clam tiles. If the founded puppet cities cant build, they wont really grow their borders either, which could look you out from growth, resources and more.
Before and after lategame plague, I lost 50 % of my pops empire wide, which is brutal. Plagues only seem to spread with trade routes, which then makes the AI almost immune, as they only run external trade routes, and not very many of them. Exporting plague is therefore quite hard, but very easy to recieve. Maybe some passive spread could be added?
Victory point progression. Whales as a VP works, No foreigners is almost impossible unless you exterminate asia. Any trade route from foreign nations also seems to trigger foreigners, so after asia filled out, I got 5 points in 100 turns. could work out that you have to go into asia as japan, which is historical to a degree.
For those who is concerned, three frigates and a privateer will easily destroy AI Inca, stopping their points accumalation.
victory demographics, the plague destroyed my ability to keep up with 4 city india in science.
