The rising tide of anti-semitism is concerning, but out of all the candidates, Le Pen was closest to one's own views. I do not endorse his holocaust denial, but he has some fairly good, common sense ideas, as compared to the evil socialist/communist Jospin.

It´s a record of 28% of abstention. No opinion poll study previewed this. I'm sure many of the people who stayed at home will deplore that a lot. It was a bad campaign by Jospin, and there is a huge disapointment with the candidates of the establishment, but no one previewed such an outcome.

Well the explanation given is that people were fed up with violence in cities and only Le pen did talk frankly about that, without hypocritical talks.

This is critical,it's true.
There were 16 candidates(mostly from the left wing).
This has nothing to do with anti-semitism.This vote is thought by many people to fight insecurity.
During the past 5 years,the situation in some suburbs got very critical n the criminality got higher.
In some suburbs,the police doesn't even wanna go(the same for ambulance,doctors,firemen etc).
But this was the same B4.
The difference is that nobody in the medias talked about it n policemen were placed where nothing happens so that the criminality figures are lower.What would Le Pen do?He'd place the policemn where nothing happens so that the criminality figures get lower.Anyways i don't think Le Pen will get any powereople will vote Chirac(who said on the last national holiday"promisses belong to those listening to em") n in the Parliament he won't have any power as well as it's not proportional but selective(it depends on the circonscriptions,french sub-counties).The circonscriptions that annoy(ultra-right n ultra left ones) are made bigger so that they got less representants).In 95 15% of the voters had voted for him but he got only 1 seat over 577 in the Parliament.To my mind Lionel Jospin will have the majority in the Parliament.

Seriously, I have been a part of Paris that was downright scary, there was about 15 of us, but we all thought that some serious trouble was about to erupt. There were no cops around, and the French's love of idiotic foriegn tourists wouldn't have done us any good either. Luckily there was enough of us to deter any real damage being done.

The "problem" with these right wing politicians is that they are partially correct. There IS an immigration problem in Europe. But the wackos are the only ones who say anything about it, because they are crazed and have nothing to lose. Any other politician will be "Hitlerized" by nightfall if they say anything to that effect.

AND there is growing enthusiasm for the idea that the open doors of Europe are a bit too open.

Anyone remember Haider?

Because Le Pen wants to take a meat axe to Europe (I, personally, would merely use a tenderizer), and a new French President standing up and saying so could send a big chunk of the economy into free-fall, meaning I don't get to eat smoked salmon for lunch every day.

Because every Algerian expelled from France or pelted with a rock by a jubiliant national front supporter is a potential 9/11 rematch waiting for the boarding call.

Yeah, immigration and crime are legitimate issues. But being the only candidate to talk about them doesn't make Le Pen a legitimate alternative.
