Hi.
First post here. I'm really not an expert. I play little after work for recreational purposes.

I play Prince level and usually wins.

Just want to share the last game I'm playing.
Leader: Joao (Expansive, Imperialistic)
UU: Carrack
UB: Feitoria

The fractal created one large island, but also 4 other smaller, but decently sized islands.

First I banished Cyrus from the main island, to two of the smaller islands. After that Sitting Bull got his own (very small) island.
I was now 1st ranked, builded some and wiped out Cyrus. Took on the 2nd ranked Brennus, who will fall very soon. The game is practically won. Asoka and Ragnar are backwards and not as near powerful as me.

Now for comments on Joao. The traits (which, do not look so exciting) have been nice. Never had any problems with health, and the first two early wars generated something like 5 generals. One became the usual Healer-unit (why should anyone do anything else?), 2-3 become instructors in my unit-builder city, 1-2 instructor in some other city.

UB comment: Coloss+Feitoria+Free Market+Open Borders = rule big time !
UU comment: Carrack is awesome. Could colonize a big island quite early, accessing some nice resources. Also Carracks made it possible to wipe out Cyrus from the two smaller islands. Note also that I opted for circumvent bonus and got it.

Soooo.
Test him out. Joao is really cool.
Over and out.

welcome to CFC :)

Joao really is fun. try him on a terra map sometime, you'll be the first to settle on the new world which can be a huge advantage! you can even race to optics with only a few cities where you start, then build your palace in the new world so that your new cities don't pay colony expenses ;).

Joao is a leader I want to play more of too , in builder games with the UB especially.

According to r_rolo1, who is from Portugal, the new Joao music in 3.13 is more authentic Portugese guitar music, which adds to the flavor.

^^Exactly... the previous music was not Portuguese ( it sounded more like the music they use in films to pretend they are in the Midlle ages ( just pick any music, slow it down and play it with a lute in medieval fashion ( with the fingers, not with that little piece of wood that in portuguese we call palheta ( don't know the english name ) ) ). The new music is clearly played with a Portuguese guitar (the sound is unmistakable... ) and the music lsounds like a Coimbra's Fado ( not sure about this, but it is surely a Fado ). It looks that Firaxians heard my ( and others ) complaints about the music

About the leader: I think that people thinked that João II was a weak leader because his traits are weak isolated. That is true, but they have a strong synergy. You'll have more and better developed cities ( because you'll have sooner settlers and sooner workers ) and that can make you stronger than a Fin civ with fewer cities and less devepment. The UB is very strong too and appears in the time that you really start to need it ( when Astro cames to play, in spite of this UB makes profitable to settle even those 1 tile islands next to the main continent ). The UU IMHO is not as strong , but being able to harm people without fear of reprisals should not be shunned, as well asbeing able to settle empty islands or continents ( that plays well with the UU )

Joao possible has the best traits for expansion, and you can extend your reach very quickly. It's really quite useful.
