JOE-06 - Big Fat Metal Barons

The variant:

We must control all copper, iron and aluminium resources in the world.
We have to be selling (for gold) at least one resource to every civ by the end of the game. That's active deals at games end making Diplomacy a bit more fun.
We must NOT wipe out any civilization...they are paying customers after all.

How about that?

lurker's comment:
No Rock 'n' Roll?!?

First rule, avoid this at all costs.

We will be taking Shaka to smelting glory!

Here's our start.

start.jpg

Not too shabby! Lots of lovely cottagy grassland, a couple of hills for production, a fair bit of forest for chopping and a happiness resource or two, not too mention gems a stones throw away.

The rooster will be picked in an ordered random fashion by me.

ROOSTER
GreyFox (30 turns)
frankcor (20 turns)
JesusOnEez (15 turns)
Lucky1972 (15 turns)
vra[somenumber] (15 turns)

10 turns thereafter and the usual 24/48 got it and post. Please post an updated rooster after your turnset along with the save.

My first thought is to get BW as soon as possible and rush the nearest civ with Impi, depending on the whereabouts of copper. I'm a little below a Monarch player myself though so this is treading new ground for me, but getting another capital site early is always a huge boost.

Rushing is gonna to be a bit difficult on Monarch, esp if you don't start with mining. Will see how things turn out ... we may get lucky and have copper nearby.

Settling on site, warrior start and switch to worker after size 2 will be my plan. Research is obviously gonna be Mining and then BW.

I'm at work and can't see the save. Looking at the picture I am not sure if we only have two grassland hills for production if settle in place. If so, capital will be too short in production for my taste. Since there's a lot of river tiles to the south, I would move the scout SW first, decide his next move depending on what he sees, then decide about settling spot.

I would love to have those gems in capital, but it seems we would lose fresh water to get them. Just hope to have some other food resource arroud them for another city.

Edit: Is it better to let capital grow to 2 before starting worker? I never did the math (shame on me - I'm a mathematician) but since we start with agriculture shouldn't we farm that rice (and maybe the sugar) as soon as possible?

Settling in place give 1 plains and 1 grassland hill, and from what I gather reading other SG's, neglecting defence (mostly fog-busting) in the beginning means a slapping by the barbs. In single player games I always build a Worker first. I don't do any maths, I'm a play by "feel" kind of guy...I found getting bogged down in the maths of it takes all the fun away, but that's just me.

Wonder what's the point of signing the resources when turning on resource bubbles would be just fine :crazyeye: (well, before the patch, maybe it has a purpose, since the resource bubbles show some spoiler on location of equator).

Anyway, having 3 high food resources (sugarx2+rice) makes me reconsider the size 2 worker switch ... so I go with worker first.

We have hammer bonus for worker, so we don't need the food to produce worker.

There after is a series of popping hut, killing lions, and meeting civs.

Mao came from the west, Khan and Brennus came from the north-west.

Hmm ... never knew there can be barb as early as 3400BC in Monarch.

Like the brave warrior I was, I ran.

Here is the revealed world in my turnset.

Our Capital:

joe06-BC3100-capitol.jpg

Notice that contrary to what one expects, I farmed the sugars first before the rice.

Right. Sugar farms.

They give the same amount of food as the non-irrigated rice, but give one more gold coin. That is crucial in early gameplay, the extra gold. Plantation is still milleniums away. After the second farm, I suggest mining the northern hills. Bronze Working is 3 turns away.

@GreyFox, that's why I play Civ. It'll make a man out of me.

@Rex, showing up to watch the Grey One snap? More coffee stains on my monitor. Thanks.

@Jesus, now my pants are soiled after I saw your picture of the wood shed.

I'll play 20 turns and report before Saturday evening. GreyFox's sugar farm is superb and his improvement plans look good to me too. Maybe I can top them.

Wonder what's the point of signing the resources when turning on resource bubbles would be just fine...

Originally I did turn the resource bubbles on for the screenshot, but then I thought, "Sometimes I don't find it onvious what the resource actually is from the bubbles...maybe other people are like that...". Hence the signing instead.

Maybe it's just me.

GreyFox's development plan looks good to me to...have to say I never would have thought of farming the sugar first...but I'm crap. :D

Please post an updated rooster after your turnset along with the save.

Geez, then what in hell do we want a SG leader for? :gripe:

Alright, here you go:

250px-Rooster_crowing.jpg

I don't know how to update it though ... only know how to roast it, fry it, broil it, grill it, ...

seriously, I didn't read that instruction ... or I did but forgot all abt it.

Nice move, farming the sugar first!:goodjob:

We have 3 hills, not 2. Ok production. I agree on minning them as the next worker action.

I like our lands, It seems like we can put a lot of good cities arround our capital, although all that jungle will slow our development a bit. We will need a lot of workers, hopefuly we will capture some soon.

City Locations will change once we see the copper, but I like coastal fish-cow NE of capital for production and some commerce, and also helping to block some future city sites on the jungle (gems, pig, rice).

I don´t see us getting that marble soon, because north lacks food.

I started off by attempting a little micromanagement in our vast empire, in the foolish hope of finding a GreyFox blunder:
mb01.jpg

But alas, there’s not much more to be eked out the situation. Working the yet-to-be completed sugar farm south of Ulundi would not reduce the time needed for Bronze Working so I grudgingly left things alone.

We met Hannibal:
mb03.jpg

When our 1st Warrior of Ulundi completed training, I began work on a Settler. At that point, I did switch from working the grassland forest to the second sugar tile for the one additional beaker it would yield us with the same contribution to the Settler’s training.

Next turn, Bronze Working was completed and I selected Wheel next, revolted to Slavery, and took this picture:
mb02.jpg

I spent the rest of my turnset exploring the areas near each of the Copper resources, losing our Scout to Bears while defending in a forest across a river :

Of the two sites, the northern one is superior and our Warrior is at what I think is the site of our 2nd city. It has no hills but does get hammers from each of the four resources it will command. It should be a good hybrid city for us with good commerce from the Gems and the fresh water lake. It screams for cottages.

Our settler is 1 turn away from completion and our Worker is building a road to the Copper site. JesusOnEez, if you move the Settler to the mined hill next turn, it has a road already constructed, The road on the Elephant tile will finish the following turn and the settler will be able to found our copper city the turn after that.

Impi won’t be far behind!

Here is what is left of our empire following the tragic war with Hannibal (just kidding) with known cultural borders marked:
mb04.jpg

The death of our Scout has slowed our exploration. I suggest replacing him soon but another worker might be in order. Ulundi is still size 2 because I didn’t whip the Settler.

While, to the casual observer, most residents of the United States and the United Kingdom appear to all speak English, I have no clue what going out on the lash means.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Is it something involving a partner and a collar?

While, to the casual observer, most residents of the United States and the United Kingdom appear to all speak English, I have no clue what going out on the lash means.

I'm glad to know that. I was beginning to wonder if my level of understanding of the English language would be enough to communicate with my team mates ;).

I agree with the spot for our second city. The cows provide enough food (4) for decent growth. I even did the math this time: if no workers or settlers or whipping, city will be size 4 in about 30 turns, producing impis in 4-5 turns, and generating a lot of comerce (6 from gems and something from marble, dont remember how much - edit: 2 from marble total 9). It also helps a lot with blocking.
