During a photo-op in The Big Easy, John McCain blasted the response to Katrina, and the Federal - George Bush - response. So what was John "Straight Talk Express" McCain doing while New Orleans flooded? He was celebrating his birthday with a cake from and with George Bush in attendance. Hey John, perhaps you could have mentioned to George that New Orleans was flooding. ;)

If only McCain had charted a private jet to fly down to Louisiana and start pulling bodies out of the water, instead of celebrating his seventieth birthday. That self-centered slimy politician. How dare he eat cake while poor people 1000 miles away were miserable.

Indeed. Our nation's favorite cuddly Maverick deserved human sacrifice on his 70th birthday and the full attention of our Commander-in-Chief.

Thats quite a strawman, El... Celebrate 69th birthday or charter a plane to go pull dead bodies out of the water. My God, poor John was all out of options. How about not criticizing Bush for doing what John was doing?

Um...dealing with a crisis is W's job (and Blanco's and C-Ray's), not McCain's.

Meaningless.
Exactly. The right-wing sound bites are getting dumber by the month.

Events like Katrina can and will happen again and governments will botch the jobs again.

For as much as the righties love to bag on China they certainly are far superior at dealing with natural disasters than we are. Of course it helps that when the city/state/country says "GTFO!" they actually listen and evacuate.

Is McCain the last Republican who cares about having government actually accomplish what it sets out to do?

So Bush should have flew to NO and pulled bodies himself? What exactly could he not do by being elsewhere, besides unskilled labor?

Yes, all politicians should have immediatly flew to NO and pulled bodies! :crazyeye:

You criticize Julie for grandstanding at 9/11, and then demand other politicians do the same.

What difference does physical location make?? You know, we have phones and stuff for issuing orders, etc. But no, you think a politician's job is grandstanding?

This is purely a political move by McCain to separate himself from the Bush administration.

Actually, until Blanco calls Bush to move in, Bush's job is to oversee FEMA, the Coast Guard and any federal enforcement services, ie prepare to move in if the call comes. McCain said he would have been on a plane asap to a local air base to take charge. Was that the advice he was giving Bush at his birthday party? Now, John McCain has decided from his senate seat that what I do in the privacy of my home is his business, but a major US city is flooded and he's celebrating a birthday with the Prez. Of all people to criticize Bush for that, it aint him.

What's McCain gonna do? Declare war on the weather?

I betcha one million dollars a hurricane will do this just to prove him wrong in his first year in office.

Politician telling people what they want to hear.

Here's the reality: Katrina will never happen again until the next time it happens.

Jesus Christ Eco, you're using El's strawman and it was just unstuffed

I'm not the one saying that politicians should immediately fly to wherever they can grandstand (nor is El) but other people seem to think they should.

I ask again, why does physical location matter? You think only Bush could assess the situation? Professionals giving him information is not good enough?

Symbolically. When there are people dying in large numbers, the leader of the nation should at least appear to give a damn. Sure, it won't actually make a bit of difference, but neither would Bush visiting Ground Zero, but what do you think his odds of re-election would have been if he didn't do that?

Whenever some Einstein "declares a war" on something you can pretty much guarentee the thing will be the same or worse twenty years later.
Why do you say that? The War on Drugs worked out fine. Not to mention the current War on Terror, it's been wildly successful. What we really need, is a War on Chicks that won't sleep with me. It's essentially win-win, as it can't eactly get worse.

I wish this forum had reputation points, because that was an awesome post. Good thing I learned from experience not to mix beverages and Internet forums
