I was reading Oliver North's column today on TownHall.com, and this just jumped out of the page and shocked me --

"...Well, seventh-grade students in the Byron Union School District (California) now have a mandatory course on Islam, where they must participate in prayer 'in the name of Allah the Compassionate the Merciful,' chant praise to 'Allah, Lord of Creation,' dress up like Muslims, take a Muslim name and stage a mock Jihad."

You can't say the pledge of allegiance anymore, but they can do THIS? A *mandatory* course on Islam, and forcing them to participate in chants?

If you ask me, I think George Bush should bomb the Byron Union schools...they're just terrorist training camps operating under federal funding...

hmmm, that does sound ****ed up. though my guess is, the news people are making it sound worse that it is, because it is islam that is being practised, as opposed to any other religion.

 I find that extremely hard to believe. Not even public schools could be THAT stupid. [punch]

It is California, which is on the Left..er, West Coast.

Well, that would make sense...
On second thought, the entire ordeal does seem plausible, but probably exaggerated. Have parents complained about the prayer stuff? And the Jiahad thing? I mean, most schools are completely up in arms just because of the Pledge.

Are you always this unquestioning of items in the media?

Oh, I see, Oliver North must be a conservative, hence he can't be overexaggerating or anything.

took a look on the site.

"Town Hall: Conservative News and Information"

hmm, oliver north seemed to have problem with a lot of things kids learn in school. like sexual education and "Gone as well are most historical accounts of the inhumane treatment endured by America's soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines in World War I and II, Korea or Vietnam. Instead, students are required to know that slavery, the Holocaust and conditions in modern Iraq are examples of "cruel and inhumane" treatment."

about the course on islam. i think it´s good have a mandatory course on Islam, that prevents a lot of missunderstandings and make people understand each other, but dress up and chant prayers are problary not the best way. but that´s me, a lefty.

did also find this:
"Fortunately, many students are reclaiming their campus and their First Amendment rights. Taylor West of Harvard University organized a Rally for Patriotism and American Unity. One rally participant said it was needed because of the overwhelming "distaste of the government" and "inappropriate distrust and second-guessing of our government" throughout the campus.

Students like Taylor really are rebels in the fight for free speech on college campuses. While the anti-war march at Harvard had more than 300 participants, the unity rally only had about 50. These free-thinking students aren’t afraid of standing up for their beliefs in an environment that is so hegemonically leftist. "

is the environment in harvard leftist?

Why don't we also teach the kids Nazism? We have to be "unbiased," don't we? It's ridiculous.

America was founded on Judeo-Christian values, not Islamic fundamentalism.

Can we have a mandantory class on Christianity then?

Ha! Unlikely. Remember, America is the Great Satan. We cannot teach Christian values in schools, because that would be our evil indoctrination of children with our evil scripture and moral standard.

We can teach Islam, Hinduism, some Buddhism, not Judiaism (anything that recognizes any part of the Bible is evil), or Christianity.

Hmm, Islam recognizes the whole bible as far as I know...

And besides that, what's bad about learning about other cultures and/or religions? (I'm not referring to that great article, talking about "forced" prayers...)

i think it should be mandatory courses on islam, hinduism, buddhism, judaism and christianity. maybe people wouldn´t compare islam and nazism then.

i also think it´s necessary to teach kids what nazism is.

I didn't think they did. That would be my understanding because the New Testament is about how Jesus is the Son of God and Muslims believe Him to be a teacher/prophet.

But anyway, the problem with having madatory courses on the major religions is that some other religions and sects who think they're pretty darn important too are going to be all up in arms they weren't included.

i think the five world religions should be enough.

I'm actually not that sure how much (or to what degree) Islam recognizes the bible or certain elements of it. But hey, religion class wasn't mandatory here, so I didn't pay that much attention ;)

Ollie North? That paper shredding, felony commiting nut?

   I'll believe it when you quote a credible NEWS source. Amazes me how a guy becomes a hero because he committed a felony by supporting an abusive, murderous dictator. Just because he liked his FINANCIAL system over the other guy that wanted to be an abusive, murderous dictator.

He sold arms to these people, despite the fact it was agains the law and was convicted of a felony (which was laughably overturned by a right wing judje...an outrage  ).

And now the guy is being quoted as though he were a legitimate journalist or source of news.

Anyway, if its happening, its wrong the ACLU will put an immediate stop to it. Besides, as we ALL know, religion doesn't belong in our schools :D

BTW, is that your answer to everything, RM? Bomb them? Countries, schools...... ;)

While I agree not Islamic Fundementalism, I also say we were not founded on Judeo-Christian values, but rather more mundane but important values such as the right of property and fair representation. We were not founded to be God's new country.

That's a ridiculous statement. History classes teach history. Islam had a very signifigant impact on our history, like it or not.

They don't ignore Christianity. They don't teach Creationism, of course, but they certainly discuss Christianity's impact.

There is a big difference between teaching about the impact of a religion and teaching the religion.

Surely nobody thinks they should ignore Islam's impact, right?

This story is proof that Ollie North is NOT a reliable source or a reliable journalist. He's better suited to the National Enquirer.

He's just trying to stir up anti-Islamic opinion.
