I've played a few games against the comp now and I'm trying to go for a win either by space race or political victory.

But I'm constantly having money problems. How do you generate a decent economy? My scientific research is only at 60% and I'm just barely staying in the black. Then I look at some screenshots on the website and I see people with $4k plus $250 a turn! How the heck do you do that???(without cheating, please)

all my cities have banks and half of them are creating wealth and no units. i dont think i'll get the space ship when i can barely keep my head above water.

please fill me in.

note of thumb. build two workers per city at LEAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also WELCOME TO CIVFANATICS! [party] :bday:

also you have to like this guy  i just love this dude

some more tricks:

1.Road every single tile in the empire. most new people don't road tiles and this means less money.

2.Switch to better governments such as Republic and Democracy. These governments give a Standard Tile Bonus which means it gives you extra gold where ever your citizens work. Ex: you have 10 citizens you will get 10 gpt more. (this is usually not seen because of early corruption but the pile builds up and then you will see). When you first switch it will look like you are losing money and you may have to switch your science slider down. gradually though you will find that you will quickly start gaining money.

3. When you are in republic or democracy you should have a marketplace and bank in every city. these improvments will greatly increase your gpt. once you have enough banks build the Wall Street wonder. This will greatly increase your income.

4. In cities that you capture during war and are unhappy and produce little turn them into specialist farms. this means turning all the citizens into specialist if you can without it losing food. in your case turn every citizen into tax collectors. you will get 2 gpt.

5. cities that riot try to make the unhappy workers into tax collectors but beware of making other people unhappy.

6. micromanage. don't rely on the computer to micromanage. the AI is a complete baffling idiot. i once found the computer put one of my citizens on to a barren desert when their was a empty slot with a cow that was mined and road. i had nothing to lose but everything to gain. (sometimes i think the computer is helping the other AIs :mischief: )

7. do every step here and you will be making over 250 gpt i guarrantee :)

hope this helps

You sell your techs aggressively to fuel your research. Try to get GPT(gold per turn) payments and renew them by selling new techs when they run out. This will actually put you further ahead as it will bankrupt the AIs.

Make sure you are in a Republic government. If the military upkeep is killing your economy either disband most of your units or use them.

Also, wealth is by far the worst thing to produce, build units instead then disband these units to speed up the construction efforts of your other towns(or just conquer with these units).

Post a save if you need more help.

The roads!

Hey! You recycled that answer...

He means: build roads (and later railroads) -everywhere-. Turn off research early in the game and trade for techs. Switch to Republic. Get rich. Welcome to CFC!

No I didn't. The one I used last time was "The roads.", with a period. :p

Welcome to CFC, but your signature is longer than the limit.

It's all commerce. Like other said, roads help. +1 commerce can really boost your economy. Another thing that really helps is going to the government Republic or Democracy. For every tile that has at least 1 commerce, it produces +1 commerce. Essentially, you can almost DOUBLE your economy. Also, trading techs/luxury/strategic resources is good for gold per turn deals. Then, research at a quicker rate and keep selling those techs. Leave the AI in the dust!

Traditionaly, the game is played on a computer using a combination of a mouse and keyboard. Some players may favor one more than the other, but it's really a matter of opinion. I for one use only a few shortcuts when playing.

He can just shrink the sig down to size 1 or 2 text.

Size two is the normal text. ;)

Commercial doesn't help that much.

drop your sci rate down to 30% ish aswell once you play bigger maps.. also as soon as it says one turn left to discovering a science, drop rate as far as you can go without making it more than a turn (often only 10%) and so you get a big bonus cash for one turn.

could anyone post (or direct me to) a saved file that generates this kind of dough? i tried some things last nite and got up to as much as +15 per turn. but then i was down to -5 just as fast.

does trading for luxuries effect your gpt? maybe something else (probably very obvious) that i'm missing?

thanks again

lux's alone can trade for 40+ gpt

Vanilla (regular old Civ3) or PTW or C3C? You can find all kinds of saves with that kind of income in the SG forum. C3C ones are easier as there are more of them current, but there are some old vanilla ones around, too, if you know where to look.

I still wonder why people always keep saying 2 workers per city.

I espescially wonder so because noone actually builds even slightly close to that amount.

In qsc i don't think i have ever seen anyone build more workers than i, most have half the number.
I usually have around 1.5 per city.

So i think it is time to ditch the cliche of 2 workers per city, and i advise around 1.5, which compared to most players is exeptionally much.

Your military advisor can give you a full summary of your armed forces (That includes non-combat units like workers) just open the advisor screen and select his tab.

And don't forget to note the captured units at the bottom (which are not counted above).

But of course! I normaly use all my captured workers to build colonies though. Otherwise I'll just set them to auto-clean and ignore them until the end of time, or use them as bargaining chips.

If you sort by unit on the Military Advisor screen (F3), it will show how many units of each type you have. To make it even easier you could use CivAssist which shows the total number of workers and the average per city (CRPsuite may do the same, but I haven't tried it).

Actually i always have two workers per city WackenOpenAir.

1. here is how you micromanage(you may already know this). anyone correct me if i'm wrong:

when you open up your city you have cities. i'm guessing you know about special citizens and labors. move one of your laborers to an open spot. know check how much it produces compared to the before tile. if your in the beginning of the game you should always maximuze the amount of food you get. the more food you have the more citizens you have. the more citizens you have the faster you can produce commerce improvements. also the more citizens you have the more tiles you can work. the more tiles you can work the more money, shields, and food you get. so you see the point that food is important to stimulate your economy for gold and maximum growth and production. if you have a resource you should try to work that. resource usually give you much more benefits than anyother square regardless. but if you are going to shrink because of the resource being worked dont' work the resource. you can always work the resource later when your city is bigger. another important rule of micromanaging. irrigate food resources and mine shield resources. this will bring much benefit to your civilization. another rule mine green and irrigate brown. this rule optimizes the amount of shields and food you get. this is a basic review but if you want more you can read this excellent article written by Trip: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3acad_food.shtml

also read the rest of the war academy to get up to speed. it will greatly benefit your civ experience:)

hope this helps;)
