Kal-els 140x140 Earth Resources bic & bix

Kal-El,

Awesome map--is there any chance you'll ever take up a North America-only map? It's tough to find a really good one out there (Jason's is very playable but not great for aesthetics), and scenario builders would go crazy for it...well, anyway, just wondering :)

Hmmm...you know, I hadn't really thought about it :) I don't know...how viable does a 140x140 sound?

Well, I was thinking it should probably be 100x140 or 140x180 or something along those line, I would have to actually take a look at the dimensions of the continent to figure out the actual ratio for the map.

Seems like that would make sense...I'm not familiar with the actual pixel sizes of the map vs. their designators (Standard, Large, etc.) within the game--you'd know better than I would.

i hate to show favouritism, but shouldn't this be stickied? as its a good earth map :D

Kal-El if you do another world map PLEASE try and make sure the detail of Europe is not lost.

In the Civ series the Mediterreanan Area IS where the most intense activity occurs as there are so many civilizations centered here. Far too many good world maps I've seen I have shelved rather than play as Italy looks awful and there are Western Europe always seems to my eye to be ugly and mis-shapen.

You've really done a great job with Spain on this map (I've seen some really awful ones of that country!!!), but France is :crazyeye: Moving the Central Massif to 70,46 would be a very good idea that would do much to improve that map in my humble opinion.

The main body of the Alps (the Mountains) should be where you've got those hills in Italy in my opinion as at present it puts the mountains of the Alps too far North. Again in my opinion.

Ah, my point.

I think if you were to do a world map of 140x180 that would be very good indeed but that I'd like a projection that would allow you to draw Europe/Med very well as for me and indeed the way the game is setup with civs IS the most vital area of the world.

I completely agree, and I have tried my darndest to accomodate that region without completely distorting the rest of the world. For gameplay reasons Europe should actually be as big as Asia and Africa could do with a bit of shrinkage as could South America, but that would lead to an awefully strange looking map. :D

In order to preserve the detail level I reduced the size of both the Atlantic and the Pacific. It is however impossible to cross either ocean with a Galley without The Great Lighthouse.

First, thank you for making a decent large-size world map. Too many custom maps of real places are huge or bigger and my poor old comp simply won't play them. With this, it looks like I can actually occaisionally play on Earth when I want to. However, when browsing the map in the editor, I noted that the above quoted statement is inaccurate. A galley could island hop from the northernmost island off the coast of Chile west to the solitary island (Easter Island?) and then from there to the South Pacific archipelago. Both jumps are coast-to-coast, 3 squares each and it's all coastline from there.

Moving the Chilean island one square north and adjusting the coastline accordingly looks like it would fix it, although you'd need to delete/reposition the whales north of that as well. Anyhow, it looks to be a real nice map and I can't wait to try it. Too bad I know of no decent way to merge the custom rules of one scenario with the map of another, cause I like to play my game all customized to hell with my own personal mod. ;)

Edit:Ooh! I just saw the Import option from the File menu. Copying my mod and importing your map into it and it's off to 25-civ dino-barb fun! :D

Great map - Kal-el.

But I think there are a few to many luxuries and resources. ;) ;)

Also:

Difficult to achieve because of the map size, but America seems a little to close to Africa later in the game. Needs 3 more ocean tiles to seperate.

And in the Pacific a couple of extra ocean tiles to separate Easter Islandfrom the other Islands near the Americas

Maybe a map sizse of 145 * 150 would be better, without impacting to much on the time between moves, later in the game.

This is by considering other remarks made in this thread by Pdescobar and others.

The problem you have is that by adding 10 extra tiles across or down, you add 1400 extra for the AI to check. Glad its you and not me.

You are the :king:

Great map Kal-el. When I play a world map I always use this one, IMHO the others are too big.

A question: for my own use I have created a mod out of this map, do you mind if I post it (with proper credit of course)? What I have done is create Brazilian and Argentinian civilizations and placed starting areas in Rio de Janiero and Buenos Aires. No custom leaderheads or units, I have just made Carthage into Brazil and Spain into Argentina. Brazil's leader is Lula da Silva, Argentina's is Evita Peron. I have changed the city and great leader names to be Brazilian and Argentinian as well, but nothing else. I have found that the new civilizations create more balanced games when starting in the New World.

Kal-el,
can you give us any indication of when you will be updating this map. i.e. Adding Incense and Elephants. Also are you considering increasing its size by a small amount : to seperate N. America/Africa and Pacific Islands/S. America. Plus increasing Europes size a little bit.

On my basic spec machine 400Mh Celerion, 8 mb graphics card and 128 ram, a turn in late modern era only takes about 8 mins (if not at war). So a slightlly larger map should not have to much of a time related delay.

Map size of 150 * 150 for instance.

Harrier, making a slightly larger map is just as hard as making a map from scratch, as you has to start from scratch. Making changes to a map is one thing, altering the size another.

Excellent map Kal-el. I haven't finished my game on it yet but it seems brilliant :) It's great to have a smaller Earth map to play on, as I don't have the stamina to finish a game on one of those monster maps. I recently made a 20x20 Earth map and found that took me a couple of hours so I really appreciate how much effort you must have put into making this for our enjoyment :). Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I played this map, but it is still too slow. I have to wait more than five minutes when entering Industrial age. BTW, my computer has Pentium III 1G cpu and 512M memory. Maybe I should upgrade my computer?

This is a problem common to larger maps. It helps if you turn off the animations for the movements of other civilization's units. This can be done through the preferences screen any time during a game.
